NEW DELHI: A hospital blaze caused by a suspected short-circuit killed at least six patients in a trauma centre at the largest state-run hospital in India’s northwestern city of Jaipur, and injured five, officials said on Monday.

The fire began in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, “releasing toxic gases”, hospital official Anurag Dhakad told the ANI news agency, adding that a short-circuit was the suspected cause.

“Five patients are still critical,” he said, while 13 had been safely evacuated from the two wards of the hospital in the capital of Rajasthan, which draws patients from across the desert state.

Fire brigade teams arrived within 20 minutes after the fire began late on Sunday in the neurosurgery ICU, hospital superintendent Sushil Kumar Bhati told the agency.

Most of the hospital equipment was gutted in the roughly two hours it took to bring the fire under control, however, broadcaster NDTV said.

Jaipur Police chief Biju George Joseph said a forensic investigation would determine the exact cause.

The government of Rajasthan, whose capital is Jaipur, has set up a panel to investigate the cause, ANI said.

It will study the hospital’s firefighting arrangements and the management’s response, as well as steps to avoid similar incidents, the agency added.

Similar hospital fires in India have been blamed on short circuits in electronic equipment.

Ten newborns died from burns and suffocation after a fire in November at a neonatal intensive care unit in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

In May 2024, six newborns died in a fire at a baby care hospital in New Delhi, the capital.

Kanye West’s upcoming gig at Italy festival sparks debate after U.K. revoked rapper’s entry over antisemitic remarks

Kanye West’s upcoming gig at Italy festival sparks debate after U.K. revoked rapper’s entry over antisemitic remarks

The rapper formerly known as Kanye West being denied entry into the U.K. amid an uproar over his past antisemitic remarks has raised questions over the star’s upcoming performance in Italy this summer.

The rapper, who changed his name to Ye, was scheduled to headline the Wireless Festival in London in July, but the event was canceled after the U.K. government withdrew his authorization to enter the country on Tuesday.

“Kanye West should never have been invited to headline Wireless,” U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement posted to social media.

The decision was preceded by criticism over Ye releasing a song last year called “Heil Hitler” and selling T-shirts on his website featuring a swastika. In January, he apologized in a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal and said he experienced a four-month-long manic episode that “destroyed my life.”

In northern Italy, Ye is set to headline the region’s main music event, the Hellwatt Festival, on July 18.

People in the Emilia-Romagna region where the festival is being held have raised concerns to a major labor union about Ye’s scheduled performance.

“We are listening to the many workers and citizens who have contacted us in recent days, asking for clarity on the matter,” Rosamaria Papaleo, a representative of the Italian Confederation of Workers’ Unions in Emilia-Romagna, told CBS News.

Papaleo said the concerns have centered on hosting an artist associated with antisemitic remarks in Reggio Emilia, the regional capital, which has a strong anti-fascist identity.

“It seems quite contradictory that an artist known for his antisemitic remarks can be hosted by our city, which has always strongly advocated anti-fascist values,” said Papaleo.

Reggio Emilia was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor in 1950 for its key role in the Italian resistance against the Nazis during World War II.

“Anti-fascism for us is not a whim, but a value rooted in our history,” Papaleo said. She emphasized that while the union does not intend to disrupt the festival, which represents an important event for workers and fans, it expects artists to promote positive values within the community.

Union representatives have asked Reggio Emilia’s mayor, Marco Massari, to require Ye to meet with members of the local Jewish community as a symbolic act of reconciliation for harm caused by his past remarks. Some critics have called for Ye to be removed from the festival’s lineup.

In a statement, Massari said he “distances himself from Kanye West’s behavior and remarks,” but added that any decision regarding the artist’s entry into the country ultimately lies with the national government. CBS News has reached out to the Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs for comment.

The mayor also stressed that Reggio Emilia is a strongly anti-fascist city, and that those who perform there must be mindful of its social and historical context. He called on festival organizers to create an occasion for dialogue between the artist and local communities that identify with those values.

Hellwatt Festival director Victor Yari Milani recognized that Ye’s past actions have “understandably led to strong reactions.”

“We want to stress that he has formally apologized, stating that he is neither a Nazi nor antisemitic, and that he suffers from bipolar disorder,” he said in a statement to CBS News. He also said, “We have asked him to also apologize to Italy. The festival’s values — respect and inclusion — are not up for debate.”

For now, no protests are planned around Ye’s performance. However, union officials warned that public reaction remains a possibility.

Other major artists expected at the event this year include Travis Scott, Rita Ora and Martin Garrix.

Prince Harry given ultimatum by royal family before his bombshell move

Prince Harry’s exit from the royal family might have been done, but his presence in the headlines with them still keeps him bound to the Firm.

The Duke of Sussex was allegedly forced to leave the UK after his surprise demand to the late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

Meghan’s hubby reportedly had hoped to remain part of royal life before a make-or-break negotiation led him to make bombshell decision, an expert has claimed.

The Sussexes stepped down as senior working royals in January 2020, citing ‘a really difficult environment’ as a key reason for their irreversible move.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers shared his knowledge about the situation, claiming that William’s younger brother, Harry, ‘reluctantly left’ after being given an ultimatum.

In his new biography, “Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History,” the expert made shocking claims, revealing that the prince was ‘keen to discuss a way forward with the Queen.’

Harry, according to the author, wanted a half-in, half-out arrangement, whereby he would be self-financing but could still work for the royal family.

‘In the new year of 2020, the three Private Secretaries, Sir Edward Young, Sir Clive Alderton and Simon Case, went into summit mode on the Sandringham estate and drafted their proposal,’ according to the book.

There, Harry was reportedly told it was ‘either all in or all out.’ Which, according to Vickers, was why the Sussexes spent Christmas of that year overseas. ‘He returned to Canada — reluctantly out,’ he said.

Harry’s relationship with his brother, William, took a dramatic turn after the release of his 2023 memoir ‘Spare’.

In the book, the Duke accused the future monarch of physically attacking him during an argument over Meghan and labeled their father “cold” and “distant.”

Since then, Diana’s sons have barely exchanged words, last reportedly speaking briefly at their grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.

However, the royals’ friends are still optimistic about their reunion, with one sharing William’s thughts about the Duke, saying: “He’s not heartless – part of him really misses how things used to be, adding: “But too much has happened. They can ever truly rebuild that trust.”

Nicolas Hamilton announces BTCC return for 2026 season

Nicolas Hamilton, brother of racing legend Lewis Hamilton, has surprised fans by announcing his return to the British Touring Car Championship for the 2026 season as he continues to compete while living with Cerebral palsy.

For context, cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders caused by abnormal brain development or damage before, during, or shortly after birth.

The condition has no cure; however, it can be managed to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life through early intervention, consistent physical and occupational therapies, medications, and sometimes surgery.

Nicolas has been competing since 2019 and has participated in six BTCC seasons and missed the 2024 season.

The brother of seven-time F1 champion took to social media and announced his return to the racing scene with Team VERTU, where he will drive Hyundai i30 Fastback N Performance.

Hamilton has driven a series of cars during his previous seasons, including Seat Leons, Volkswagens, Ford Focuses and an Audi S3 Saloon.

Announcing his return on Instagram, the race car driver wrote, “An opportunity to drive in one of the most competitive cars/teams on the grid; an opportunity I have worked 10 years for! I am going to give it my all, and make this the best & most successful year I have ever had.”
