Gordon Ramsay recalls hard times from childhood: ‘Disgusting’
Gordon Ramsay has spoken candidly about the poverty that shaped his childhood, describing his early years as “disgusting” and admitting there were times he went days without food.
The revelations come in his new six-part Netflix documentary Being Gordon Ramsay, which airs from Wednesday and follows the chef as he pours his energy into his latest high-stakes project in the City of London.
Alongside the pressure of launching a major new business, the series sees Ramsay reflect on the hardship that fuelled his relentless work ethic.
In one emotional episode, Ramsay looks back on growing up on council estates after being born in Scotland and moving to England as a child.
He recalls relying on food vouchers at school and the shame that came with them, explaining how poverty affected him as a teenager.
“I was hungry all the time, there was no food in the house,” he says in the series.
“I was sometimes too embarrassed to use my vouchers to get my free shepherd’s pie in case, you know, aged 15 or 16, a girl I fancied saw me. I was a skinny f***ing bean. I remember eating toothpaste thinking that was delicious because there were multiple nights where we never ate.”
Reflecting on the wider picture, Ramsay adds: “It is appalling that we’re in this situation now. It’s disgusting, an embarrassment. The system’s dysfunctional.”
Those experiences have driven his involvement with the charity Feeding Britain, which aims to provide affordable food to around 800,000 children living in poverty across the UK.
The documentary also touches on painful family relationships.
Ramsay’s father, who died of a heart attack at 53, struggled with alcoholism, while his younger brother Ronnie is a heroin addict.
The chef becomes visibly emotional recalling a recent phone call with his brother after a long period of not speaking.
“It was just sad because at the end of that call he said, ‘did I hear you ask for my bank details? I’ve got no electricity’,” Ramsay recalls.
“And so I said, ‘Come on, Ronnie, you know damn well if I knew that was going on electricity, I would. But I know full well that’s going to go on drugs.’ And it pains me, it kills me, mate. We’ve been down this road so many times.”
The series tracks Ramsay over nine months as he prepares to open several ventures inside London’s landmark skyscraper 22 Bishopsgate, including Britain’s highest restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay High, located on the 60th floor.
The intimate 12-seat chef’s table experience has already earned him another Michelin star.
Ramsay, who trained under Marco Pierre White before opening his first restaurant at 35 and quickly earning three Michelin stars, admits the fear of losing everything still drives him.
“There’s always that needle of fear you’re going to lose it,” he says in the trailer. “I’ve lost stars; closed multiple restaurants through my career. That’s what puts fuel in my tank.”
Despite his global success and reputation as one of the world’s most famous chefs, Ramsay says watching the documentary back is not something he plans to do.
“I won’t watch it,” he admits with a smile. “I never ever watch myself on telly because it’s just incredibly nerve-wracking.”
By laying bare his past alongside the pressure of building a new culinary landmark, Being Gordon Ramsay offers a raw look at how hardship, family pain and fear of failure have shaped the chef behind the shouting, and why his memories of childhood poverty still matter so deeply today.

Kaley Cuoco’s partner reveals surprising truth about ‘Big Bang Theory’
Kaley Cuoco’s fiancé Tom Pelphrey has never watched The Big Bang Theory, show that made her famous.
The actress, who played Penny for 12 seasons, revealed the surprising fact during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
She said that Tom didn’t have any idea about the hit sitcom when they first met.
The awkward moment, however, came when she met his family and his mom’s partner kept calling her “Penny” all day.
Tom was confused at first not knowing why her mom is calling that but then he apologised.
He thought that her name was mixed up, as Kaley explained that Penny was her character on the show. She added that he still has not seen it.
Cuoco is currently starring in the mystery drama Vanished, where she plays a woman whose partner disappears during a trip to Paris.
She said filming was challenging because some scenes were shot on a real train which triggered her claustrophobia.
For the unversed, Kaley and Tom met in 2022 and got engaged in 2024 as they share young daughter.
She also recently revealed that they sleep in separate rooms due to different schedules, which she says works perfectly for their family.

Taylor Swift ‘confirms’ Opalite Chris Lake remix, Tavis Kelce reacts
Taylor Swift has confirmed the official remix of her song Opalite after producer Chris Lake revealed private messages showing how the collaboration came together, with help from Travis Kelce.
The moment unfolded on Feb. 13, when Lake shared screenshots of his Instagram DMs with the Kansas City Chiefs star, explaining how the British DJ ended up creating a house remix of Opalite, a track from Swift’s latest album The Life of a Showgirl.
Alongside the post, Lake assured fans that Kelce had signed off on the messages being shared.
“When @killatrav & @taylorswift hit you about an official remix.. you get it done :),” Lake wrote, adding that his remix of Opalite was now available for pre-order on a limited-edition CD.
The messages showed Lake reaching out to Kelce in mid-January after hearing that he and Swift were listening to his music.
Lake told him he planned to try his hand at remixing the track, even though he wasn’t sure how it would turn out.
Kelce responded enthusiastically, praising Lake’s work and calling Chemistry one of his favourite albums at the moment, while saying he was excited to hear what the producer would create.
Within days, Lake said he already had something special taking shape and later sent the full version over.
Kelce’s reaction made it clear the remix was a hit.
“It’s so good dawg,” he wrote. “I’m gonna be ripping this s–t every car ride. She loves it too!! She said her teams gonna reach out asap.”
That seal of approval soon became public.
Swift reposted Lake’s update on her own Instagram Stories and added a playful response of her own, “Confirmed, Travis is my in-house house guy,” complete with prayer-hand emojis.

The remix’s release feels fitting, as Opalite, the third track on The Life of a Showgirl, was inspired by Kelce’s birthstone and themes of finding real love after heartbreak.
Swift and Kelce have been together since 2023, and he has had a close-up view of her creative process. Swift wrote and recorded the album during the European leg of her Eras Tour in 2024.
Kelce previously reflected on that experience on an episode of his New Heights podcast in October 2025, saying, “I’m just the lucky man that gets to be the support system for Taylor while she drops one of the coolest albums that I’ve ever listened to [and] that the world’s seen.”
With Swift now publicly backing the remix and Lake’s version officially up for pre-order, the behind-the-scenes exchange has turned into a full-circle moment, one where a DM, a remix and a bit of enthusiasm from Kelce helped bring a new version of Opalite to life.
