– Manchester United are considering a shock move for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, as reported by The Mirror. The Red Devils are drawing up a list of potential midfield options for the summer transfer window, and they are keeping close tabs on the 27-year-old’s future with speculation increasing that he could leave the Reds in the summer, although signing him would be a big task. Sources have told ESPN that Man United have also expressed an interest in Crystal Palace‘s Adam Wharton, Brighton & Hove Albion‘s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest‘s Elliot Anderson.

Liverpool’s alternatives are RB Leipzig‘s Yan Diomande, Athletic Club‘s Nico Williams, and Paris Saint-Germain pair Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. Meanwhile, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also interested in Olise but his transfer could cost over €100 million.

– Arsenal have been told that Athletic Club winger Nico Williams is considering a transfer away from the club this summer, as reported by TEAMtalk. The 23-year-old’s contract includes a release clause in the region of €100 million, with Barcelona and the Gunners being the two clubs that appeal most to him. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been informed that he could be available by “intermediaries.”

– Juventus will speak to Marcos Senesi‘s agent again to try to reach an agreement to sign the center back as a free agent when his contract at AFC Bournemouth expires this summer, as reported by Nicolo Schira. Juve are working to overtake Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Manchester United in the race to sign the 28-year-old.

– Manchester United will continue to monitor Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney as the Red Devils plan their recruitment strategy for the midfield ahead of the summer transfer window, according to TEAMtalk. Middlesbrough were resolute in January to see off interest from Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, but there is a belief that Hackney will be playing Premier League football next season whether that is due to promotion or a transfer, and his links with former Boro boss Michael Carrick (who is now in charge at Old Trafford) could be key to his future. But Everton are also keeping an eye on the 23-year-old’s situation.

ESPN’s Liverpool correspondent Beth Lindop on the chances of a shock move for midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

While there has been plenty of speculation over Mac Allister’s future in recent months, this one feels like a bit of a nonstarter.

The Argentina international was outstanding for Arne Slot’s side as they romped to the title last season but his notable dip in form has contributed to their struggles this term. With close friends and fellow South Americans Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez having left the club last summer, there have been some suggestions Mac Allister could soon be open to a new challenge.

However, considering a player hasn’t directly transferred between Liverpool and Manchester United since Phil Chisnall in 1964, it seems highly unlikely Mac Allister will be the one to buck that trend.

The midfielder is under contract at Anfield until 2028 and so would command a significant transfer fee this summer. It is a move that would make little sense for all parties.

The Los Angeles Angels are set to pay Mike Trout over $35 million this year, but that, combined with his injury history, has proven to be a major hurdle for the World Baseball Classic.

The three-time MVP, who was given the “Captain America” nickname for his stellar performance in the event three years ago, told reporters Monday that he was not able to get his contract insured for the tournament.

Trout said he wanted to play again, but “insurance was the biggest hurdle I was trying to get through.”

“It’s disappointing, I wanted to run it back with all the guys,” Trout said.

According to Yahoo Sports, a player does not necessarily forfeit his contract if he is injured in the event. Rather, it would be the team being owed the insurance coverage via National Financial Partners, which the WBC organization uses to take out insurance policies on the contracts of all 40-man-roster players competing in the event. 

Trout has a base salary of $35.45 million for 2026 and is making an additional $1.67 million from the $20 million signing bonus he agreed to as part of his $426.5 million contract.

For example, the New York Mets were given a full reimbursement of Edwin Diaz’s $18.64 million salary in 2023 after he tore his patella tendon celebrating a win.

Trout was part of perhaps the best moment in the tournament’s history, when he and former Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani of Team Japan went face-to-face with two outs in the top of the ninth of a 3-2 championship game. Ohtani struck out Trout in a lengthy at-bat to give Japan the title.

However, Trout has struggled immensely to stay on the field in recent years.

Since 2021, Trout has played no more than 130 games, a number he reached last season for the first time since 2019 (the 2020 season was only 60 games). His injuries moved him to right field last year, but this season, he is aiming to return to center.

Trout has not played in more than 140 games since 2016. He played in 36, 82 and 29 games in 2021, 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Finally able to stay healthy, Trout did not look like his usual self, hitting .232 with a .797 OPS — the lowest mark of his career since his brief call-up in 2011, when he did not even qualify as a rookie.

Trout is signed through the 2030 season after inking the 12-year pact ahead of the 2019 season. At the time, it was the richest contract in the history of the sport, but has since been surpassed by Ohtani, Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Raphinha said Barcelona are playing under different rules to other teams after Girona beat them 2-1 on Monday to inflict a second successive defeat on Hansi Flick’s side.

The loss at Montilivi came just days after Barça were hammered 4-0 by Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal, with both games featuring contested refereeing decisions.

A Pau Cubarsí goal was ruled out early in the second half of the loss to Atlético for offside after a seven minute VAR check, while Barça felt Girona’s winner should have been disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

“We have a lot to improve on, but not just us,” Raphinha posted on social media after Barça’s defeat to Girona saw them slip to second in LaLiga behind Real Madrid.

“It’s very complicated when the rules are different whether it’s for you or against you, but if we have to play against everyone to win, it’s OK… We’re going to do it.”

Raphinha’s comments come as Barça continue to claim they are being judged by different standards when it comes to officiating.

The Catalan club filed a formal complaint with the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] and the Refereeing Committee [CTA] over the weekend about what they perceive to be refereeing inconsistencies in Spanish football.

In a five-point letter sent to the RFEF and the CTA, Barça alleged a lack of consistency in disciplinary decisions; contradictory criteria in handball rulings; an accumulation of significant refereeing errors; a lack of transparency with the use of VAR; and inconsistent criteria for on-field reviews via the monitor.

Barça coach Hansi Flick has attempted to avoid being too critical of referees, aware that his side are not playing well at the moment, but said there was a “clear” foul before Girona’s winner on Monday.

Claudio Echeverri stepped on Jules Koundé‘s foot before Fran Beltrán‘s 86th minute winner, but the incident was not given as a free kick on the pitch nor deemed worthy of review by the VAR.

The loss to Girona saw Barça slip two points behind Madrid. As a result, Flick has given his jaded players two days off to reset before they return to action in the league against Levante on Sunday.
