Hakeem Olajuwon’s son, Aziz, picks Stanford
Aziz Olajuwon, a top-40 recruit and the son of NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, has committed to Stanford, he told ESPN on Saturday.
Olajuwon recently cut his list to four schools: Stanford, Cincinnati, Vanderbilt and Houston, his father’s alma mater. He visited Cincinnati and Vanderbilt in recent weeks after taking a trip to Stanford over the summer.
“I chose Stanford because the coaching staff made it clear they are about me not just as an athlete, but as a person,” Olajuwon told ESPN. “That meant a lot in the process.”
Olajuwon becomes the first ESPN 100 recruit for Stanford since coach Kyle Smith took over in March 2024.
“Coach Smith and really the whole staff are people who really invest in their players, on and off the court,” Olajuwon said. “Their passion, leadership and ability to connect with the teams made a huge impression on me.
“The visit felt like a real day in the life, not just a tour. I got to experience the campus, the people and the culture in an authentic way, and it just felt right.”
A 6-foot-7 small forward from Texas who recently transferred to IMG Academy (Florida), Olajuwon is ranked No. 40 in the ESPN 100 for the class of 2026. He stood out on the Nike EYBL circuit this past spring and summer for the JL3 grassroots program, averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists over the course of 19 games. Olajuwon showed a blossoming perimeter shot as the season went on, shooting nearly 42% from behind the arc at the Nike Peach Jam in July, including one game in which he made six 3-pointers and finished with 25 points.
Olajuwon, a big wing who consistently plays in a triple-threat stance, was one of the most improved and effective players over the summer. His ability to read the defense, score, pass and drive was evident, and he has shown the ability to defend both the wing and the ball with length.
Olajuwon is the second commitment for Smith and Stanford in the 2026 class, joining four-star guard Isaiah Rogers.

Kansas’ Peterson finishes game, hits 2 late 3s to beat Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas — Darryn Peterson was happy to finally finish a game for No. 11 Kansas, and the Jayhawks certainly needed the standout freshman at the end against No. 13 Texas Tech.
“This is the first game I got through to the end,” Peterson said. “I’ve been trying to all year, so to finally be able to do it, it’s a blessing.”
Peterson scored 19 points while playing a season-high 35 minutes, but his only two field goals in the second half were late 3-pointers. He made the tying basket on a contested shot from the right corner with 1:20 left, and hit again from the left wing with 44 seconds left in a 64-61 victory Monday night.
Two days earlier, Peterson scored 18 points in the first half but didn’t play the final 16:46 of a win over then-No. 13 BYU because of cramping. He is averaging 21.1 points.
An expected top pick in the NBA draft in June, Peterson had sat out a win over Kansas State the previous game because of an ankle injury. The 6-foot-5 guard has also dealt with hamstring and calf issues this season while sitting out 10 games overall for Kansas (17-5, 7-2 Big 12).
Before hitting the late 3s, Peterson was only 3-of-12 shooting against the Red Raiders (16-6, 6-3).
“He’s got something that I guess you’re born with and can’t teach. He’s got just an unbelievable ability to raise his level when it counts the most,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “That’s what he did tonight. I mean, those two plays he made were obviously the two biggest plays of the game for us.”
The tying shot, after a Tech turnover, was made over preseason AP All-America forward JT Toppin, who then had his shot blocked at the other end by Flory Bidunga before missing on a second chance. Peterson then made what proved to be the winner.
“Two crucial 3s … that was crazy,” Bidunga said.
“Coach Self told me to go make a play,” said Peterson, who was then asked where his confidence came from to finish that way. “The work I put in and then my teammates and coaches. I had a bad game … shots weren’t really going. They guarded me kind of well, but I just trusted the work, so those shots I feel like I should make.”
And he did when they counted most for the Jayhawks in their sixth consecutive victory.

Arne Slot: Liverpool’s new signing Jérémy Jacquet ‘a very big talent’
Arne Slot has described defender Jérémy Jacquet as a “very big talent” ahead of his summer move to Liverpool.
Slot’s side agreed an initial £55 million ($74.6m) deal with Rennes for Jacquet on deadline day, with the centre-back set to move to Anfield in July.
He had been the subject of interest from a host of other European clubs, including Chelsea, however Liverpool accelerated their long-term interest in the player last weekend.
“Very pleasing, of course,” Slot said. “He’s a very big talent and maybe even more than talent but we speak about talent because of his age.
“Second, because we weren’t the only one interested in him so it’s a big compliment to the people working really hard to sign players.
“Such a big talent and another example of the model we’re using at this club — young, very talented players sometimes at the start of their careers or sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career but always players that are young and can improve us in the short term but also definitely in the long term.
“We’ve signed a lot of them recently and like I’ve said many times in the mid-long term future of this club, and even the short term, is in a very good place.”
Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League table and will hope to bolster their chances of a top four finish with a victory over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
“The game we played over there [in the 3-0 defeat at Etihad Stadium], we were outplayed completely in the first half for large parts,” Slot said.
“It’s another moment for us to see where are in the development of this team.

“That being said, we know the importance of a result on Sunday but that goes for all teams in the Premier League this weekend — it’s the end phase of the season so results matter more and more.
“They’re a very good team that even beat the team we beat last weekend without their starters so that tells you, combined with the game against them, what a force City still is and always will be.”
Reflecting on Liverpool’s injury situation, Slot added: “Jeremie [Frimpong] will definitely not train this week so he is not available for the weekend.
“With Joe [Gomez], we have a little bit of hope that he might train Saturday so not available to start but maybe available to help the team if needed because, as you know, there are not many defenders available at the moment.”
