In a stanch prescient warning, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has forewarned that most white-collar jobs will be automated within 12 months, amid the rising proficiency of Artificial Intelligence. He said that AI will reach “human-level performance”, posing a direct challenge to jobs that are currently being done by white-collar employees.

Mustafa Suleyman, the Microsoft AI chief, said in an interview with the Financial Times that he predicts most, if not every, task in white-collar fields will be automated by AI within the next year or year and a half.

“So white-collar work, where you’re sitting down at a computer, either being a lawyer or an accountant or a project manager or a marketing person — most of those tasks will be fully automated by an AI within the next 12 to 18 months.” Suleyman added in the interview.

Microsoft AI CEO said that software engineering has already seen the trend, where most employees are using “AI-assisted coding for the vast majority of their code production”.

The warning of Suleyman isn’t out of thin air. Most top executives have warned of mass-level disruption globally, especially in white-collar jobs in the coming days due to AI. The ripple of impact will be observed by most sectors in the near future, even among software developer jobs.

Recently, advancements in AI has triggered panic among investors of technology companies, who are doubting the business viability of these companies in the coming times when AI will be leveraged predominantly.
