Sandro Tonali secured a thrilling 5-4 victory for Italy against Israel, scoring the decisive late goal in the 2026 World Cup qualifier just as it seemed the Azzurri were heading toward another setback.

The Newcastle midfielder erupted in celebration after his speculative strike threaded through a crowd of players and found the net, clinching a rollercoaster of a match that Italy appeared to have squandered.

Italy, who missed the last two World Cups, had been leading 4-2 in the 81st minute when substitute Giacomo Raspadori scored.

However, a clumsy own goal by Alessandro Bastoni and a header from Dor Peretz brought Israel back on level terms in Debrecen.

Tonali’s fortunate effort in stoppage time moved Italy up to second in Group I level on nine points with Israel who have played a game more — and in the play-off spot.

Italy trail leaders Norway by three points and still have a chance of taking first place and the group’s sole direct qualifying spot.
