As Budget 2026 approaches, elderly passengers are hopeful that a long-withheld relief might finally return.
Before the pandemic, senior citizens enjoyed generous fare concessions. Until 2019, men aged 60 and above received a 40% discount, while women aged 58 and above got 50% off on tickets. This applied to major trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto, making long-distance travel far more affordable. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government temporarily suspended these concessions, citing low passenger numbers and financial strain on the railways. However, even after travel returned to normal and trains became crowded again, the benefit has not been restored, leaving many seniors disappointed. Why It Matters So Much? After retirement, most senior citizens live on limited income, pensions, or savings. Travel is often unavoidable—for medical treatment, religious journeys, or visiting family. With rising fares, the absence of concessions has made train travel significantly more expensive for them. Now, hopes are pinned on Budget 2026, to be presented on February 1, 2026, by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Senior citizens are urging the government to seriously consider reviving railway fare concessions. If approved, it could bring direct relief to millions of elderly passengers across the country.
