Mbappe sends Real Madrid top as Getafe self-destruct | The Express Tribune
The victory restored Los Blancos’ two-point lead over Barcelona ahead of next weekend’s Clasico
MADRID:
Kylian Mbappe extended his goalscoring streak to 11 consecutive games to help Real Madrid reclaim top spot in La Liga with a 1-0 victory at nine-man Getafe on Sunday.
After rivals Barcelona briefly displaced Los Blancos with a narrow win over Girona on Saturday, Xabi Alonso’s side restored their two-point advantage before next weekend’s Clasico.
Getafe fended off Madrid until Allan Nyom was dismissed a minute after coming on and Mbappe quickly pounced to decide the game in the 80th minute. Alex Sancris was also sent off as Getafe unravelled in the final stages.
Alonso started with Brazilian star Vinicius Junior on the bench, with the Champions League clash against Juventus on Wednesday and Barca’s impending visit in mind.
The winger turned out to be key as a second half substitute, with both of Getafe’s red cards issued for fouls on him.
“Vini had a great impact… we told him this morning he could be so important,” Alonso told reporters.
“It was a very demanding game, coming here to face Getafe is never easy… it wasn’t the prettiest game but we did what we had to do.”
Mbappe returned after an ankle problem kept him out of a France World Cup qualifier earlier in the week, leading the line at Getafe’s Coliseum stadium.
The French forward had scored in his previous 10 consecutive appearances for club and country and found the net once again.
“We are very happy with how Kylian is going, he’s being decisive,” said Alonso.
Mbappe twice came close before Getafe earned a foothold in the game and began to frustrate the visitors, stopping them from creating much danger.
Only towards the end of the first period did Madrid perk up again in attack, with Soria saving from Rodrygo Goes after good work by Jude Bellingham.
Getafe’s goalkeeper made a good stop from a powerful David Alaba free-kick and Fede Valverde flashed a strike across the face of goal before half-time.
Alonso sent on Vinicius in the second half and his spark began to worry the hosts, who resorted to fouls to fend off the Brazilian.
Bellingham fed Mbappe who fired off target, and then whipped a free-kick inches wide, as Madrid remained comfortably on top.
Getafe see red
The game changed when Getafe substitute Nyom, under a minute after coming on, needlessly knocked down Vinicius off the ball with his arm and was sent off.
Moments after play restarted, Real Madrid took the lead.
Arda Guler fed Mbappe, who was just onside, and he turned nicely before firing past Soria and in off the post for his 10th league goal of the season, leading the charts both in La Liga and in the Champions League.
Getafe continued to self-destruct and Sancris was sent off for a second yellow card, gained for another unneccessary foul on Vinicius, leaving Jose Bordalas’s side with nine men.
Alvaro Carreras fired wide after a cheeky scoop over the defence by Vinicius, whom Getafe fans booed.
Despite their significant numerical disadvantage, the hosts had one golden chance to level in stoppage time, but Thibaut Courtois saved from Englishman Abu Kamara with his knee.
“We should not give away this chance, but Thibaut did his job,” said Alonso.
Getafe coach Bordalas said he did not believe Nyom deserved to be dismissed before Madrid’s opener.
“Nyom’s red card changed the game,” said the Getafe coach. “For me it’s not a red card, yellow at most.”
Elsewhere, newly-promoted Elche continued their good start to the season with a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao which left them seventh, one place above their Basque opponents.
Rayo Vallecano climbed into 10th with a 3-0 win at Levante, while struggling Real Sociedad snatched a late 1-1 draw at 10-man Celta Vigo.
NEW YORK — The president of the NCAA is urging schools and conferences tempted by riches offered through potential deals with new equity sources to think about the long-term repercussions before jumping into the deals.
“My message to everybody on this would be really simple: ‘Be really careful,'” Charlie Baker said Monday at a Big East roundtable on the future of college basketball.
With schools and conferences under increasing pressure to raise funds to pay their players, reports of them negotiating with new equity sources for college sports are becoming more frequent.
Recent headlines out of the Big Ten are about its negotiation to bring in an investor that would pay $2.4 billion to help market the conference’s media rights and other properties.
A meeting of the conference’s presidents and chancellors last week didn’t produce a vote on the deal, with Michigan and USC holding out.
One of the most outspoken opponents has been Michigan regent Jordan Acker, who at a monthly regents meeting last week called the equity proposal, which would last through 2046 and pay more than $100 million to each school, an attempt at solving “the same old problem with a new, and this time, rushed solution.”
In a statement, the Big Ten said its potential partner — the investment arm of the University of California pension system — was not a private equity firm, but rather a nonprofit organization (that still would seek a profit on its investment.)
“Ultimately, it is the decision of the Big Ten member institutions’ presidents and chancellors to decide if it’s the right opportunity and those conversations are ongoing,” the conference said in a statement.
Baker wasn’t speaking directly about the Big Ten issue when discussing equity. He also wasn’t completely dismissive of the idea.
“People should try to play the long game,” he said. “If I’ve learned anything about college sports, it’s very hard to get anybody to think past tomorrow. … People should be thinking vey hard about the long term, and we’d all be well-served, especially in terms of the kids” who the schools are in business to help.
Sri Lanka snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to record their first win of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, edging out Bangladesh by seven runs in a nerve jangling finish in Navi Mumbai on Monday.
With Bangladesh cruising and only nine needed off the final over with five wickets in hand, having mustered just three runs off the penultimate over, skipper Chamari Athapaththu took the ball herself and turned the game on its head.
Four wickets tumbled in four balls as Bangladesh collapsed, losing five wickets for just two runs.
Athapaththu, calm amid the storm, finished with career-best figures of 4-42.
The drama began with Rabeya Khan trapped leg-before off the first ball, followed by a run-out next delivery.
Then, Bangladesh’s hopes sank when their captain Nigar Sultana danced down the track only to find long-off lurking.
When Marufa Akter was adjudged lbw next ball, Athapaththu had conjured the unthinkable, defending nine with a single run conceded in the over.
“We handled the pressure well. We knew that if we took the game deep, teams could crumble,” Athapaththu said. “It wasn’t perfect, batting collapses and dropped catches hurt us, but luck smiled at us today.”
For once, fortune favoured Sri Lanka, whose campaign had been marred by rain, missed chances and misfiring batters.
Hasini Perera, who struck her maiden ODI half-century, made 85 off 99 balls, peppered with 13 fours and a six.
She was the backbone of Sri Lanka’s 202 all out as she reached the milestone of 1,000 runs in ODIs.
A 74-run partnership with Nilakshika de Silva gave Sri Lanka a solid launch pad, before another collapse saw six wickets fall for 28 run.
Even so, the Sri Lankans held their nerve in the death overs to seal the win and climb to sixth in the standings.
With four points, they are level with New Zealand and India, although will need results to go in their favour to grab the last semi-final spot.
Australia, South Africa and England have already booked their places in the last four.
“We kept losing wickets at crucial times,” admitted Bangladesh skipper Sultana, whose fighting 77 was in vain as her side were eliminated.
“I tried to take the pressure off with a boundary, but it just didn’t come off.”

The San Jose Sharks apologized on Saturday after a pro-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appeared on the video board of the SAP Center as the organization celebrated Hispanic Heritage Night.
The message read: “SJ Sharks Fans LOVE ICE !! Get’em Boyz !”

The franchise posted a statement on X as the Pittsburgh Penguins wrapped up a 3-0 victory against the Sharks.
“During the first intermission of tonight’s game, an offensively worded message which had been externally submitted was inadvertently displayed on the in-arena scoreboard,” the team said. “Sharks Sports & Entertainment deeply regrets that this message, which does not meet our organization’s values, was not detected during our standard review process.
“The Sharks organization sincerely apologizes for this oversight, and we are actively working to determine the origin of the message.”

ICE enforcement in California has been a major topic of conversation over the last few months. In Los Angeles County, the board of supervisors voted to declare a local state of emergency in response to the agency’s operations in the region.
County officials claimed the raids have “created a climate of fear, leading to widespread disruption in daily life and adverse impacts to our regional economy,” including decreased workplace attendance, temporary or permanent business closures, and increased strain on schools, hospitals, and places of worship.

San Jose councilmembers also approved a policy to force ICE agents to unmask during enforcement operations. The council passed the new mandate unanimously.
