Seattle Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh has slugged his way into the history books.

Raleigh hit his 55th and 56th home runs of the season during the Mariners’ 12-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium. Raleigh broke New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle’s record for most home runs by a switch-hitter in a single season. 

Raleigh, 28, also tied Mariners great Ken Griffey Jr. for most home runs in a single season in franchise history.

The All-Star catcher hit his 55th home run from the left side of the plate. He demolished Royals pitcher Michael Wacha’s 79-mph curveball deep into the right-field seats to put the Mariners up 4-0 in the top of the third inning. 

His second home run of the game came in the fourth inning, this time from the right side of the plate. Raleigh laced Royals pitcher Daniel Lynch IV’s changeup over the center-field wall to put the Mariners up 9-0.

“It’s really cool. I’m humbled by it. A crazy kind of thing I never thought would happen,” Raleigh said, standing inside a tunnel beneath Kauffman Stadium after his 20th career multi-homer game and his 10th this season. “Just taking it day-by-day, pitch-by-pitch. Really enjoying every day with these guys, and just trying to finish the season strong.”

Raleigh and Yankees star Aaron Judge are the favorites for the American League MVP award.

The Mariners’ catcher has a .247 batting average, 118 RBI and 14 stolen bases to go along with his 56 home runs.

The Mariners (83-68) hold a narrow half-game lead in the American League West over the Houston Astros (83-69). 

The Mariners will look to maintain their division lead when they take on the Royals (75-76) in the second game of their three-game series at 7:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Colorado will turn back to Kaidon Salter as its starting quarterback this week against Wyoming, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Salter started the first two games, but the team switched to Ryan Staub for the 36-20 loss to Houston on Friday. Staub was 19-of-35 for 204 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions and couldn’t get much going in the second half as Colorado (1-2, 0-1) managed just six points after halftime.

Staub began the season as Colorado’s third-string quarterback, an afterthought behind veteran transfer Salter and decorated freshman Julian Lewis.

Salter entered the season with a 23-6 record as a starter. Lewis ranked No. 12 overall in the class of 2025, enrolling a year early for the chance to compete at Colorado.

After a season-opening loss to Georgia Tech, Colorado played all three quarterbacks in the 31-7 win over Delaware.

So far with the Buffaloes, Salter has thrown for one touchdown and added two more on the ground. He is completing 68.2% of his passes.

DUBAI: Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha has expressed confidence in his side’s ability to challenge any team after sealing a place in the Super Four stage of the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025.

The qualification came after a tense day of uncertainty, and Pakistan finally stepped onto the field at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for their last group match against the United Arab Emirates. 

They put in a strong all-round performance to beat the UAE by 41 runs and secure their spot in the next round of the eight-team event.

Put into bat first, the Green Shirts needed a swashbuckling cameo from their number nine batter, Shaheen Shah Afridi, after Fakhar Zaman’s half-century up the order, to accumulate a decent total of 146/9 in 20 overs.

Following Zaman’s dismissal in the 14th over, Pakistan lost wickets at an alarming rate and had slipped to 110/7 in 16.5 overs until Shaheen forced recovery with an unbeaten 29 off just 14 deliveries with the help of three fours and two sixes.

Although the total ultimately proved sufficient for their bowlers to defend, Pakistan captain Agha reiterated their struggles with the bat, especially in the middle overs.

The all-rounder asserted that they are yet to bat at their best, with which they can breach the 170-run barrier regardless of the opposition.

“We got the job done, but we still need to improve our batting in the middle order. That’s been a concern and something we need to work on,” said Agha.

“Apart from that, we did a good job. We haven’t batted at our best yet…we’re still just finding our way to 150. If we bat well in the middle overs, we can push it to 170 no matter the opposition,” he added.

Agha then lauded left-arm pacer Shaheen for his batting exploits and credited top-order batter Saim Ayub for chipping in crucial stages of the game with the ball.

“Shaheen’s batting has improved a lot–he’s already great with the ball. Saim is someone who has been bringing us back into games, and I hope he can continue like this till the end,” Agha continued.

When asked about the Super Four challenge, Agha expressed his team’s readiness, stating that they can compete with any opposition.

“We’re ready for any challenge, and if we keep playing the way we have over the last four months, we’ll be good against any side.”
