Guardians’ David Fry hit in face by 99 mph fastball during bunt attempt, Tigers’ Tarik Skubal left shocked

A scary scene unfolded at Progressive Field during the Cleveland Guardians-Detroit Tigers game Tuesday night, when the Guardians’ David Fry was hit in the face by a foul tip on a bunt attempt.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with the Guardians down 2-1, there were runners on the corners with no outs when Tarik Skubal delivered a 2-1 pitch to Fry, who quickly turned to square for a sacrifice bunt.
But the 99 mph fastball from Skubal, the Tigers’ Ace, was too far inside. As Fry made contact with the pitch, it hit the top of his bat and redirected into his face.

Fry hit the dirt at home plate in immediate pain, and Skubal threw down his glove and hat in shock. Skubal was in clear discomfort after what unfolded, but everyone on the field and in the stands shared his feelings as trainers rushed out to tend to Fry.
Fry eventually stood up, and blood was streaming down from his nose. A cart came out to take Fry off the field, and as you’d expect, his night was over.
Unfortunately for Fry and the Guardians, because the ball made contact with the bat before hitting him in the face, it was considered a foul ball, and the count went to 2-2.
Pinch hitter George Valera came in for Fry to finish the at-bat and take his place for the remainder of the game.

The inning ended up getting worse for Skubal and the Tigers once play finally resumed. His first pitch after the accident was wild, allowing the runner at third base to score to tie the game, while Jose Ramirez moved up to second.
Then Skubal committed a balk, allowing Ramirez a free bag, a groundout to first base scored Ramirez to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Skubal is one of the best pitchers in MLB, and the 2024 Cy Young Award winner entered the game with an American League-leading 2.23 ERA over 189.1 innings. His resume this season makes him a frontrunner for the award yet again.

The game has huge playoff implications because the Guardians were just one game behind the Tigers when they began their final three-game, regular-season series Tuesday night. Each game is crucial at this point, with only a handful of games remaining to determine who will vie for a World Series title this October.

UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor almost had a perfect night in his squad’s dominant 57-20 win over Florida International at the First Responder Bowl at Gerald J. Ford Stadium Friday.
Why wasn’t it a perfect night for Traylor? He couldn’t avoid getting drenched.
Traylor, 57, knew what was coming as the clock was winding down in the fourth quarter. He was about to get doused with water by his players.
So, the head coach took off toward the end of the sideline, hoping to escape the oncoming shower.

The attempt to escape was futile as Traylor made it to the end of the sideline, turned around and saw wide receiver Jamel Hardy Jr. coming after him. Traylor was held up by a reporter and then got drenched.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid the water, Traylor fell down onto a ServPro mat near the sideline, which ended up being costly. Traylor was mobbed by his players and found himself at the bottom of an impromptu dogpile, creating a hilarious scene.

While at the bottom of the dogpile, Traylor got another bucket of water dumped on him by defensive lineman Kaian Roberts-Day.
Aside from unsuccessfully evading his players in celebration, Traylor had a good night. UTSA won handily in its sixth consecutive bowl appearance.

FIU went up 14-0 early, but UTSA stormed back to tie at 14 before the first quarter ended, and it never looked back.
UTSA had a 310-93 advantage in total yards in the first half. Quarterback Owen McCown threw three touchdown passes, and running back Will Henderson III scored three times.

Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett is on the verge of NFL history, as he is just a half-sack away from tying the single-season record set by Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt.
Garrett, 29, said it would be “special” to break the record by sacking Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
“It’d be special. He’s legendary himself. And it’s a legendary record I’m out here chasing. So that’d be a great one to put a picture on the wall with,” Garrett said at a press conference Friday.

Rodgers is quick to get the ball out, and Garrett said it’s important to take away his easy reads.
“Gotta take away those easy access throws, make him look at his second read, and he’s gotta keep rushing. There’ll be (opportunities) if we continue to get stops during the game, and he can’t continue to lean on those quick passes, when you gotta score points,” Garrett said.
The Browns, who are 3-12, play the Steelers at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The Steelers would clinch the AFC North and a playoff spot with a win over the Browns.

Garrett hopes the Browns play spoiler, so if he sets the record on Sunday, he would do it in a win.
“Yeah, I just play. I want to get it, and you know, like I said, I want to win while doing it. And I think we have the guys who are locked in who want to do that as well,” Garrett said.
The seven-time Pro Bowler said there is no pressure that comes with the record looming.

“Pressure? Nah, no pressure. Like I said, it’s going down. So, I’m not stressed or worried about if I’m going to get it. Just a matter of when,” Garrett said.
Garrett has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The four-time All-Pro has an astounding 124.5 sacks in 132 career games.
