Slot: Liverpool to pay Jota’s contract in full

Liverpool’s owners will pay the final two years of the late Diogo Jota’s contract to his family, according to Reds manager Arne Slot.
The Portugal striker died aged 28 in a car crash with his brother André Silva on July 3, just 11 days after the father of three had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso.

Reports in Portugal at the time suggested Fenway Sports Group had committed to paying out the rest of Jota’s deal, which would have run until the end of the 2026-27 season, in full to support his family.
And in an interview with TNT Sports, Slot has confirmed that to be the case, as he revealed: “I said how proud I felt about how the fans reacted and the ownership…
“Owners are mainly criticised, like managers, but the way they’ve handled this situation by paying his wife and his children all the money from the contract is — maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not in football.”
Slot also commended Liverpool’s supporters for how they reacted to Jota’s death, adding: “How many flowers there were, all the memorials, I can almost get emotional thinking about it.
“It’s unbelievable what our fans have done and our players as well, the way they have conducted themselves in and around the funeral.
“And then we have to train again. There are moments where I feel ‘what must his wife and his children feel now?’ It sounds so hard but our life continues.”

Kane nets 100th Bayern goal; bests Haaland, CR7

Harry Kane reached a century of goals for Bayern Munich with his second strike against Werder Bremen on Friday and claimed a piece of European history in the process.
Kane’s 100 goals have come in just 104 matches, the fastest anyone has achieved that mark with a club in Europe’s top five leagues this century.
Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo needed 105 games to notch a century of goals for Manchester City and Real Madrid, respectively,
Kane, who joined the Bundesliga giants from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, is the 19th man to score 100 goals for Bayern.
The 32-year-old has been in particularly prolific form to start the new season. Kane now has 10 goals in five Bundesliga games and 15 goals in all competitions.
After Jonathan Tah had opened the scoring for Bayern, Kane made it 2-0 with his 99th goal from the penalty spot in the 45th minute after being fouled by Marco Friedl. It was Kane’s 18th successful penalty conversion in 18 attempts for Bayern, the longest streak without failing to score in Bundesliga history.
It took only until the 65th minute for Kane to bring up the century as he finished low from the center of the box following a pass from Luis Díaz.
Although he was undoubtedly eyeing a third hat trick of the season, Kane was substituted in the 78th minute to a warm reception from Bayern fans inside the Allianz Arena.
The match finished 4-0 after Konrad Laimer added a fourth goal for Bayern late on.

Marquinhos adds to PSG injury woes before Barça

Luis Enrique said he is not concerned by Paris Saint-Germain‘s growing injury list after Marquinhos was sidelined with a left thigh issue.
Captain Marquinhos scored an own goal in Monday’s 1-0 loss to rivals Marseille and even though he finished the contest, the Brazil defender reported discomfort post-match and is set to be ruled out until after the October international break.
Marquinhos joins Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and João Neves on the treatment table. Champions League winners PSG played more than 60 times in the 2024-25 campaign, including seven matches in the summer Club World Cup.

But Luis Enrique told a news conference ahead of Saturday’s visit of Auxerre in Ligue 1: “That’s football, that’s competition, that’s reality!
“You have to adapt. I’m not worried, that’s football at the top level. Football is a sport where injuries are normal because it’s a contact sport.
“I’m not worried at all, and that’s the mentality that I want to transmit to the players and the fans. There are a lot of quality players at the campus. Everything is planned out by the club. That’s life, it’s normal.”
The PSG boss did concede the absence of Marquinhos for the foreseeable future was a blow, especially with a trip to Barcelona on the horizon next Wednesday.
He explained: “During the last move of the match against Marseille, Marqui told us that he felt a small pain and that’s why we don’t want to take a risk.
“It’s perhaps normal after a match of that intensity. It’s a shame for us as it is for every player that gets injured, and also because Marquinhos is our captain, but I think we’re ready.”
Luis Enrique regularly talked up Dembélé as this year’s Ballon d’Or winner after a stellar last season.
Dembélé scored 35 goals, including eight in their successful Champions League pursuit, in the 2024-25 campaign and his manager was delighted to see him subsequently receive the honour this week.
“Above all else, we were named team of the year, and that’s what’s the most beautiful thing. I think we deserved that honour based on last season. As for Ousmane Dembélé, seeing him at this level, with the way he has played, it’s really great,” Luis Enrique said.
“I have in my mind the picture of Ousmane holding out the Ballon d’Or so our fans could touch it. I don’t remember seeing anything like that in the past.”
