Adeyemi sends Dortmund past Wolfsburg | The Express Tribune

DORTMUND:
Karim Adeyemi’s first half strike gave Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg on Sunday, putting them just two points behind German Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
Looking to bounce back after letting a two-goal lead slip deep into stoppage time in Tuesday’s 4-4 Champions League draw at Juventus, Dortmund were dominant, rarely giving the visitors a sniff of the opposing penalty box.
The hosts took the lead after 20 minutes when Adeyemi curled a shot inside the near post from 25 yards out after Marcel Sabitzer forced Wolfsburg into an error.
Dortmund had scored 17 goals and let in just one in their past four home matches against Wolfsburg — all victories — but Adeyemi’s goal was all they had to show for their dominance.
Five minutes into the second half, Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura found Konstantinos Koulierakis in the box and the Greek defender’s shot appeared to cross the line after bouncing off the crossbar.
Despite protests from the visitors, goal-line technology cameras showed the ball was millimetres short.
Dortmund looked nervous as the clock wound down but the hosts held firm, with Nico Schlotterbeck a stable presence on his return to central defence after a six-month injury absence.
“It was a long time, a hard time,” Schlotterbeck told DAZN about his injury absence.
“It was the first time in my career, which was a real challenge for me.
“But I’ve been working hard and the coach asked me yesterday if I was up for it — and as a footballer, you’re not going to say no.”
With half an hour remaining, Wolfsburg brought former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen on for his first match since leaving Old Trafford in May.
Burke hat-trick
Oliver Burke bagged a hat-trick as Union Berlin brought Eintracht Frankfurt crashing back down to earth following their 5-1 thumping of Galatasaray in midweek, with a shock 4-3 win away.
Ilyas Ansah unleashed a long-range rocket to put Union in front on nine minutes before Scotland international Burke scored on the break to double the visitors’ lead.
Frankfurt lacked energy and were fortunate to pull a goal back when Nathaniel Brown’s shot was deflected in just before half-time.
The lightning-quick Burke put Union back in control with two goals in four second-half minutes, first from a header and then after finishing off a counter attack as Andrej Ilic turned provider for both.
Frankfurt kickstarted their comeback effort as Can Uzun scored with 10 minutes left while Jonathan Burkardt added a penalty seven minutes later to fray Union’s nerves.
Union coach Steffen Baumgart was sent off for showing his middle finger in protest at the penalty, but the visitors held on.
“I’m sorry — actually I’m not,” Baumgart said about his dismissal. “I’m not going to hold back my emotions, but we have to live with it.”
Bayer Leverkusen gave up points for a third time in four matches this season as Haris Tabakovic’s injury time equaliser gave Borussia Moenchengladbach their first goal of the campaign and a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
There were few chances in a match between the two Bundesliga sides to have already sacked a coach this season.
The hosts fired Erik ten Hag after just two league games and Gladbach let former Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane go on Monday after managing a solitary point from their first three matches.
Holding a one-goal lead after Malik Tillman’s 70th-minute volley, Leverkusen looked on track for their second win of the season until Tabakovic rose high to head in a set piece in the third minute of stoppage time.

OSU lands S Smith, brother of star Buckeyes WR

Class of 2027 safety Angelo Smith, the brother of Ohio State star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, has committed to the Buckeyes, a source confirmed to ESPN Sunday night.
The younger Smith is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound junior at Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. In addition to Ohio State, he held offers from Miami, Oklahoma State, Georgia State and Toledo. News of Smith’s pledge was first reported by Rivals.com.
Jeremiah was a three-time state champion at Chaminade-Madonna and landed with the Buckeyes in the 2024 class as one of the highest-ranked wide receiver prospects in the ESPN recruiting rankings era, which began in 2006.
A second-team All-American last fall, Jeremiah shattered Ohio State’s freshman receiving records with 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns in a starring role on the Buckeyes’ 2024 national title team. He has logged 20 receptions for 315 yards with three receiving scores over the initial three games of his sophomore campaign in 2025.
Angelo followed in his brother’s footsteps at Chaminade-Madonna, where he was credited with 40 tackles, 11 pass break ups and three interceptions as a sophomore last fall.
He now lands as the third member of Buckeyes coach Ryan Day’s 2027 recruiting class. Five-star wide receiver Jamier Brown, the No. 2 prospect in the ESPN Junior 300, has been committed to Ohio State since November. Quarterback Brady Edmunds, who gave his pledge to the Buckeyes on Dec. 2, 2024, is ESPN’s second-ranked pocket passer in the cycle.
Ohio State holds 13 ESPN 300 pledges in the program’s 2026 recruiting class, which currently sits at No. 9 in ESPN’s national class rankings for the cycle. After a bye week in Week 4, the Buckeyes remained at No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 on Sunday ahead of a Week 5 visit to Washington on Saturday.

‘Not a rivalry anymore’, Indian captain Suryakumar says after outplaying Pakistan

DUBAI: India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav played down the hype around the cricket rivalry with Pakistan after beating their bitter rivals by six wickets in the Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday.
India rode on a blazing 74 from opener Abhishek Sharma as they chased down a target of 172 in 18.5 overs in the Super Four clash, where they again refused to shake hands with their opponents.
It was India’s second win in the Twenty20 tournament over Pakistan in a week after their group stage clash.
It was also their 12th in 15 T20 internationals.
Asked if this dominance showed that the rivalry was waning, Suryakumar replied: “You guys should stop asking questions about the rivalry between India and Pakistan.
“According to me, if two teams play 15-20 matches, and if it is even, then it is a rivalry. 13-0, 10-1, I don´t know what the stat is, but this is not a rivalry anymore.”
Pakistan’s last of three T20 wins over India came in the Asia Cup in Dubai in 2022.
India and Pakistan only play in multinational tournaments as their bilateral ties have been stalled since 2012 over political tension.
Pakistan rode on a brilliant 45-ball 58 from opener Sahibzada Farhan but managed 171-5 after romping to 93-1 in 9.3 overs.
Suryakumar said that India played better cricket as Abishek and Shubman Gill put on a rapid 105 for the opening stand in 9.5 overs.
“I think we were better than them (Pakistan), and also from a bowling point of view,” said Suryakumar. “The catch drop percentage at this venue is so high, and that is part and parcel of the game.”
Suryakumar praised Sharma’s talent.
“He knows what is required of him, what bowlers are going to bowl, that’s a plus point for him. He is learning with every game,” said Suryakumar of the 25-year-old left-hander.
Pakistan captain Salman Agha said that his team had come up 15-20 runs short.
“We have yet to play a perfect game in this event,” said Agha, whose team next faces Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
“After being 91 in 10 overs, we lost way but still feel 171 was a challenging total.”
Agha acknowledged that his bowlers could not control the Indian openers.
“We need to play a perfect game, do well in all three departments,” said Agha. “We look forward to playing Sri Lanka in the next game.”
Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in their Super Four match in Dubai on Saturday.
Fakhar Zaman’s controversial dismissal
Agha also voiced his concerns over the controversial dismissal of opener Fakhar Zaman.
“I don’t know about the decision. As far as I am concerned, it looked like the ball bounced before being collected. Obviously, it’s the umpire’s job and they can make mistakes—I have no problem with that. But to me, it did look like it bounced,” Agha said.
“I might be wrong, I don’t know. The way Fakhar was batting, if he had continued through the powerplay, we could probably have scored around 190,” he added.
The incident took place on the third delivery of the third over of Pakistan’s innings. Fakhar Zaman attempted to drive at an off-cutter from Hardik Pandya, edging the ball towards wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.
The delivery, however, lost pace off the pitch, forcing Samson to dive forward to take the catch.
Given the proximity of the ball to the ground at the point of collection, the on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire. Fakhar, appearing confident that the ball had touched the turf, waited for the verdict.
After several replays from multiple angles, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge adjudged Fakhar out. The left-hander stood momentarily in disbelief before walking back to the pavilion.
On his return, he was seen discussing the decision with head coach Mike Hesson, seemingly surprised at the outcome.
The dismissal immediately ignited debate on social media, with fans and former players criticising the umpiring standards in the high-profile encounter.
The top two teams from Super Four will play the final in Dubai on September 28.
