Buyers close in on Claire’s UK while Bodycare chain shuts stores

Two different companies, one shared theme — the tough state of retail in the UK. News has emerged that there are two buyers vying to take on failed accessories chain Claire’s, while the struggling Bodycare chain is shutting 32 of its 147 stores.

Sky News reported that acquisition-hungry Modella Capital, and Canadian billionaire Doug Putman (another enthusiastic bidder for distressed businesses) “have both expressed interest in taking over” the Claire’s UK stores.

Modella is the new owner of WH Smith’s high street stores (to be renamed TG Jones) while Putman in the man who bought and is turning around HMV and who also tried to buy Wilko. Both are interested in Claire’s, which went into administration last month.

They’re both reported to have tabled bids but it’s unclear which of the two is ahead in the battle to buy the business or whether they have any rivals for the chain, the sale of which is being handled by Interpath.

The 278 UK shops and 28 Irish stores continue to trade while bids are assessed. But it’s believed that a number of stores will eventually close, putting jobs at risk among the 2,150 people working for the chain. There have been suggestions that a core of around 100 stores would remain.

Meanwhile Bodycare, the beauty chain with 147 stores, is closing 32 of them with 450 jobs being cut.

Sky had reported recently that it was on the brink of administration without a rescue deal. Such a deal hasn’t been forthcoming. 

The stores being closed stretch from Scotland to Southern England and include those in Edinburgh, Scunthorpe, Maidstone, Croydon, Morecambe, Wood Green, Newport, Port Talbot, Rhyl, and Wrexham.

The previously profitable company has faced a tsunami of problems in recent years including cash-strapped customers, higher costs, the delayed transition from its online retail platform, an aborted stock market listing and funding issues.

Interpath is also handling Bodycare and is seeking to sell the remaining business with 115 of the stores continuing to operate.

UK’s Frasers Group strengthens board with new leadership



Frasers Group plc (“Frasers” or the “Group”) announces that David Daly will be stepping down from the Board after eight years of dedicated service, at the company’s AGM on 24 September 2025. He will be succeeded as Chair by Sir Jon Thompson on 1 September 2025. 

Frasers Group is also pleased to announce that it anticipates appointing Andy Lyon as Non-Executive Director to the Board and expects to make a further announcement in due course regarding a second, well-advanced candidate, for a further Non-Executive Director position. Those roles would succeed David Daly, Ger Wright and Helen Wright, who are not seeking re-election at the forthcoming AGM.

Frasers Group said David Daly will step down as chair after eight years at the AGM on September 24, 2025, with Sir Jon Thompson succeeding him from September 1.
Andy Lyon, former PwC partner, is set to join as non-executive director, with another appointment to follow.
CEO Michael Murray thanked Daly, Ger Wright, and Helen Wright, while welcoming Thompson and Lyon to guide the next phase.

  • Sir Jon Thompson joined the Group’s Board of Directors in June 2024 as a Non-Executive Director, bringing with him extensive experience in corporate governance and major project management. His appointment marks an important step in supporting Frasers Group’s long-term strategy as it continues to strengthen its position as a global business.
  • Andy Lyon, former partner at PwC whose expertise includes acting as audit partner for Next and its credit business, would add significant financial and governance experience to further strengthen the team as it develops Frasers Plus.

Game on: Skechers is picking up speed at its largest factory mall store in the world, an immersive performance experience that opened last week at Dolphin Mall in Miami. Following successful performance stores in Canada, Europe and Chile, the 26,017-square-foot location offers consumers footwear, apparel and accessories for basketball, running, soccer, golf, pickleball and the outdoors, as well as renowned lifestyle innovations like Skechers Hands Free Slip-ins.

Skechers has opened its largest factory mall store at Dolphin Mall, Miami, spanning 26,017 square feet.

The August 29 launch, attended by athlete Julius Randle, highlights Skechers’ global expansion of its performance retail concept.

Minnesota Timberwolves power forward and Skechers athlete Julius Randle joined shoppers in celebrating the August 29 grand opening of the store, which unveiled the brand’s many displays: a running racetrack, basketball and pickleball courts, golf green and soccer and sport adventure areas, all surrounded by state-of-the-art digital LED screens and supported by product specialists and educators. The store also features selfie areas localized with Miami-centric graphics.

Consumers can shop the Company’s specialized technical footwear, as well as key lifestyle product, work footwear and Skechers apparel and accessories. This week sees Mulberry relaunching what was one of the best-known bags it has ever made. It’s the Roxanne, which comes with a “fantastical campaign” shot by Tim Walker and featuring Wicked actor Cynthia Erivo.

The original bag was frequently seen on the arms of influencers such as Kate Moss and Alexa Chung and it now expands into a family: with four modern iterations sitting alongside the 2004 style that continues to be available via The Mulberry Exchange. 

The company said the Roxanne and the Small Roxanne are “odes to the much-loved original, taking its punky, Y2K attitude and updating it, with brass buckle and streamlined details”. 

Both sizes can be worn either over the shoulder or as a crossbody, and are made up of 44 individual pattern pieces. There are also two new shapes that “epitomise Mulberry in 2025” — the Roxanne Shoulder Bag and the Mini Roxanne Shoulder Bag. These are “lighter, versatile styles made for modern living, which both feature brass buckle detailing and sleek silhouettes”.

The Roxanne family is available from 8 September with prices starting at £795.

As for that campaign, Walker is a longtime Mulberry collaborator while the company has also turned to stylist and Harvey Nichols creative director Kate Phelan for the styling credits.

In a set of “surreal” and “playful” stills, the “Mulberry Spirit comes alive – with Erivo posing in a warped, dreamlike room rich in colour and texture, with rope swings, fireplaces, and decorative carpets”.

We’re told the campaign “reflects the duality of the Mulberry Spirit”.

It also includes “a softly shot video series”, Mulberry Moments – an intimate in-conversation between Erivo and Recho Omondi, the fashion journalist and host of The Cutting Room Floor. Across eight personal short films, the pair discuss topics “including Cynthia’s first Mulberry, her earliest memories of growing up in London, and how – like singing and acting – fashion is highly emotional”.

Erivo said: “As a born and bred Londoner I remember longing for a Mulberry – the ultimate statement bag – so this moment really feels full circle. The campaign has captured the Roxanne bag’s rebellious and romantic spirit, something that represents my own style. I believe that style centres on authentic self expression and collaboration, and this drew me to partnering with such an Iconic British brand who champion creativity, craftsmanship, and cultivate a sense of community.”
