Jets quarterback Justin Fields offers blunt reaction to benching

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields had a blunt reaction after he was benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fields, 26, didn’t have much to say as he was going to get a massage, adding that he didn’t have time to talk, the New York Post’s Brian Costello reported.

“There’s no reaction. That’s life. S— happens,” Fields remarked.

Jets running back Breece Hall took issue with how Costello approached Fields at his locker and called him out over social media.

“Pathetic move by you (to be honest). Wish some of yall would grow up and stop acting like little kids nagging somebody till they get mad lol,” Hall posted to X.

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed, to become the starter after releasing Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback has shown flashes this season but has largely struggled.

In Fields’ nine starts this season, the Jets have gone 2-7. Fields completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception.

The passing offense with Fields has been anemic, as the quarterback is 29th in the NFL in passing yards. Fields has been outstanding as a rusher, running the ball 71 times for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

While Fields is a prolific runner, it hasn’t been enough to offset the team’s passing struggles with him under center.

Taylor, 36, has appeared in three games and started one this season, when Fields was hurt. The 15-year veteran has completed 62.3% of his passes for 379 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in limited action this season.

Head coach Aaron Glenn hopes the switch pays off when the Jets (2-8) play  the Ravens (5-5) – one of Taylor’s former teams – on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

‘LeBron watches us’: Duquesne coach talks Akron roots ahead of game at former high school

‘LeBron watches us’: Duquesne coach talks Akron roots ahead of game at former high school

A few weeks ago, Duquesne head coach Dru Joyce III sent a text message to a lifelong friend.

That friend quickly responded, which is the norm for most long-term friendships but extraordinary when you consider that friend is Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

“I just hit him the other day about a weak-side defense question, just to pick his brain on how he would play it,” Joyce told ESPN about his former high school teammate. “And he got back to me just with a bunch of confidence and said, ‘No, I think you’re going about it the right way.’ So we get to share in those basketball moments.”

On Saturday, Joyce will celebrate the legacy of James and the rest of their high school team with a matchup against Northeastern on LeBron James Court at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio, their hometown. The game is free to attend. More than 20 years ago, James, Joyce and their teammates led the school to a state title in Ohio. Now Joyce will play his second consecutive game at his alma mater.

“This one is close to the heart, man. It is special,” he said. “I still approach it just like every game, but from the emotional side, man, I’m back home. I’m amongst my family and friends. This is the city that raised me. A lot of my journey happened, from a basketball standpoint, and just an overall connection with people at St. Vincent-St. Mary, and the opportunity to bring my team here to experience Akron, and I get to show them a bit of my hometown.”

To capture the full experience on Friday, Joyce took his team to the I Promise School, which was created by the LeBron James Family Foundation. The LeBron James Museum and House Three Thirty, a multiuse space also created by James’ foundation, were part of the team’s tour, too.

As they left the complex, Gloria James — the mother of the NBA superstar — came out and talked to Joyce. Some of Joyce’s players then begged him to hop off the bus so they could talk to the mother of their favorite player. That’s when a few of them learned that she and her son had watched Duquesne’s game against Villanova last weekend.

“Immediately, they were like, ‘LeBron … watched us?'” Joyce said about his team’s reaction. “What it does for our team is it elevates us.”

Joyce said he hopes Saturday’s game can help his team understand the legacy of the NBA superstar in his hometown and beyond. He said he and James have talked about his stint as a college coach who is now in his second season with the program. But they mostly talk the way friends do.

“More than anything, it’s still a loyalty, a trust and bond that we have,” he said.

That connection will be the theme on Saturday.

Joyce said family members and friends will be in attendance on Saturday. That list will include some of his former teammates.

While it seems unlikely James will be able to attend the game on Saturday — the Lakers have a road game against the Utah Jazz on Sunday — Joyce said he won’t be shocked if there are a few surprises.

“I don’t know who walks through that door on Saturday,” he said.

Overall, however, Joyce said he’s excited to extend the memory of a high school team that was led by the No. 1 pick of the 2003 NBA draft and coached by his father, Dru Joyce II, through Saturday’s matchup against Northeastern in Akron.

“It’s going to be fun,” he said.

Expert picks, best bets: How Tsarukyan can reenter title contention at UFC Fight Night

Expert picks, best bets: How Tsarukyan can reenter title contention at UFC Fight Night

Lightweight contenders Arman Tsarukyan and Dan Hooker will square off in the main event of UFC Fight Night at ABHA Arena in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday (1 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with prelims at 10 a.m. on ESPN+).

Tsarukyan is making his first Octagon appearance of the year after an injury forced him to withdraw from a title shot at UFC 311 in January. He has won each of his past four fights. Hooker also comes into the fight with some momentum, riding a three-fight winning streak. Neither fighter is in ESPN’s divisional rankings.

In the co-main event, former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad looks to get back in title contention as he takes on rising contender Ian Machado Garry. Muhammad lost the belt to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 in May. Garry picked up a unanimous decision win over fan favorite Carlos Prates in his last fight at a UFC Fight Night in April. Muhammad is ESPN’s No. 3-ranked welterweight, and Garry is No. 5.

MMA analysts and commentators provide their predictions for the main and co-main events, and ESPN betting expert Ian Parker adds insight on the value bets available on the card.

Lightweight main event

I’m not sure that Hooker can stop Tsarukyan’s takedowns. Tsarukyan will be the better grappler out there, but if Hooker can defend the takedown attempts, he will beat Tsarukyan, just like he beat Mateusz Gamrot. Gamrot beat Tsarukyan — but MMA math doesn’t work. I expect Tsarukyan to work to dominant positions on the ground better than Gamrot did and win by decision. Anthony Smith

Tsarukyan is going to get a hold of Hooker, frustrate him and win by decision. Hooker is probably game enough not to get finished, but Tsarukyan will stay on him the entire time. Out of a 25-minute fight, I believe Hooker will get controlled on the mat for at least 18 minutes. Din Thomas

Betting analysis

This looks good! Here’s the BET link from Sach: Odds current as of Nov. 20. For more, see ESPN BET

Parker: Tsarukyan to win inside the distance. Tsarukyan is a near 5-to-1 betting favorite. Don’t be surprised if he wins inside the distance here. While Hooker is extremely tough and durable, Tsarukyan has knockout power to go with his elite wrestling. I don’t think Hooker will be able to hang for five rounds. Look for Tsarukyan to take Hooker down and get the fight done there.

Welterweight co-main event

I’m leaning toward Machado Garry here. Della Maddalena wrote the book on how to deal with Belal. Now, if Belal can get on the inside and take Machado Garry down, he can win this fight. But some of Belal’s wins aren’t aging very well. We were all super impressed when he beat Leon Edwards and Sean Brady, but those two just lost by knockout. And he lost to Della Maddalena, who was the new guy in the division. — Anthony Smith

It’s a tough one, but I’m going with Belal because of his work ethic and determination. I think he grinds Machado Garry out by getting close to him and avoiding taking big shots. He’ll struggle to do it at times, but when he does get to the inside, he’ll control him and win a decision. I think Belal will win two of the three rounds. — Din Thomas

Betting analysis

Parker: Muhammad to win (+220). This fight will come down to whether or not Muhammad can get the fight to the ground. I expect Muhammad’s wrestling and pace to get Machado Garry down and win at least two of the three rounds. When fighting off his back, Machado Garry doesn’t offer submission threats to Muhammad. If you want to take a safer route, consider taking the fight goes the distance and putting it in your parlay.

Parker’s best bets on the rest of the card

Light heavyweight: Volkan Oezdemir vs. Alonzo Menifield

Menifield to win (+190). At almost a 2-1 underdog, I’m taking Menifield to get the upset. The fight would ideally stay on the feet and Menifield carries the heavier punches. Menifield has won his past two fights by decision which shows an evolution to his cardio and ability to win later rounds while Oezdemir has shown a decline in cardio in recent fights. If it gets past the first round, this goes in Menifield’s favor.

Men’s bantamweight: Bekzat Almakhan vs. Aleksandre Topuria

Topuria to win (-125). Almakhan is coming off a first-round KO over Brad Katona, while Topuria, the brother of lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, recently won in his UFC debut. I like Topuria here because he has more ways to win. If Almakhan doesn’t take the first round, expect Topuria to use his boxing to close the distance and wrestle his way to victory.
