Hurricane Melissa intensifies to Category 5 as it approaches Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa now labelled as “Category 4” is now intensifying into “Category 5” storm, prompting urgent warnings from U.S. forecasters that it could be “potentially catastrophic” for Jamaica as it endangers to become one of the strongest storms to ever strike the island.
Under these threatening circumstances, officials urge residents to evacuate low-lying areas as the hurricane is estimated to release an “unprecedented” rain.
As confirmed by authorities, Melissa can prompt around 30 inches or more rainfall in isolated areas in coming days.
As of now, Hurricane Melissa was located about 124 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica. With winds of intensity 145 mph and moving west at just 5 mph, the storm is expected to strengthen further and could become a Category 5 hurricane.
Director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Jamie Rhome, warned that the region’s forecast has become “increasingly dire.”
Emphasizing on the intensity of the storm, he warned that Melissa’s combination of the storm’s slow movement and extreme rainfall will “create catastrophic events” for Jamaica.
“Be wherever you are going to be and be ready to ride this out for several days,” Rhome urged residents in eastern Jamaica.
He also warned about widespread power outages, disrupted communications, and impassable roads.
The storm’s projected path suggests the center of Melissa will move very close to or directly over Jamaica through Tuesday, October 28, possibly making landfall as an “upper-end” Category 4 hurricane.
If it happens, it would be only the second Category 4 storm to hit Jamaica in recorded history, following the devastating Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
The emerging threat has prompted extensive preparations across the Caribbean:
Jamaica
Airports have been closed, and the government has issued evacuation orders for high-risk communities. Residents are stocking up on supplies, making supermarkets and gas stations crowded, creating a “level of panic” as reported by Norman Scott, the mayor of Spanish Town.
Haiti and Dominican Republic
There is catastrophic flash flooding and landslides in the region. Authorities in Haiti reported at least three storm-related deaths, with at least one death was reported in the Dominican Republic.
Cuba
A hurricane watch was upgraded to a warning for the eastern part of the country. The U.S. Navy has begun evacuating hundreds of non-essential personnel and family members from the Guantánamo Bay naval base.
Bahamas
The storm is forecasted to hit the southeastern Bahamas by Wednesday, October 29.
Melissa’s intensification has been explosive. With the storm expected to approach the island coast within 24 hours, officials are delivering a final and stark warning to residents to protect life.

Trump says he would not run for vice president in 2028
- Trump says he’d “love” a third presidential term.
- Calls third-term idea “too cute” but not ruled out.
- Praises Vance and Rubio as “unstoppable” future leaders.
US President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out running for the vice presidency in the 2028 US election, an approach some of his supporters have floated to allow the Republican president to serve an additional term in office.
“I’d be allowed to do that,” Trump said, in an exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One.
But he added: “I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It’s not — it wouldn’t be right.”
The remarks were Trump’s latest on the subject, which he has teased in public remarks and with “Trump 2028” hats he hands out at the White House.
No one may be elected to the US presidency a third time, according to the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution.
Some have suggested that one way around this prohibition would be for Trump to stand as vice president, while another candidate stood for president and resigned, letting Trump again assume the presidency. Opponents have disputed whether this would be legal.
Referring to the possibility of a third term, Trump said: “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.”
When pressed by a reporter whether he was not ruling out a third term, he said, “Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me.”
Referring to Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump also said they are great people who could run for the office.
“I think if they ever formed a group, it’d be unstoppable,” he said. “I really do. I believe that.”

Welcome to Derry’ makers wanted to shock fans
As the first episode of It: Welcome to Derry ends, fans are left in shock. Now, the makers behind the show say this is exactly what they wanted.
In a chat with TV Guide, co-showrunner Jason Fuchs shares, “We always knew we wanted audiences to feel disoriented and thrown off by [the feeling of] ‘Oh, my goodness, anything can happen.”
He continues, “Characters we love might not make it…’ Forget about making it to the end of the season, but make it to Episode 2! There was always this general design of How do we convey to an audience to expect the unexpected from this series?”
Meanwhile, Andy Muschietti shares that they intentionally led the audience to believe something else from the start of the episode. “We sort of presented this little subversion, which is, OK, here are the losers that you’re going to love for the rest of the season.”
“And by the end of the [first] episode, they all die,” he adds. “We all agreed it was a great idea. We’ll see now what people think. But I think it’s that kind of kick in the balls that, for good or bad, is going to shock people and hopefully make them want to keep watching.”
Jason also credits his co-showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane, for the idea to end the first episode on a shocking note. “It was really Brad’s contribution, one of the first contributions [he] made when we partnered on this.”
“I’d written the pilot, and there was a brutal ending, but it was not the current ending. There were more survivors,” he notes.
Episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will drop on Friday.

George Clooney had Adam Sandler’s nickname banned on ‘Jay Kelly’
George Clooney banned the use of Adam Sandler’s nickname on the set of their movie Jay Kelly.
The former E.R. star plays the title role of an ageing actor in the new drama with Sandler as Kelly’s manager Ron.
Clooney just revealed that he urged the rest of the cast and crew not to call his co-star the “Sandman” while they were shooting because he wanted Sandler to be taken seriously for his “incredible talent.”
The actor told The Hollywood Reporter: “You get treated the way you treat yourself. This was a different kind of role for Adam, and I wanted to make sure that he wasn’t making fun of his incredible talent.”
“He likes to just deflect and I was like: ‘You know what, dude, you’re really good in this film and you’re a really good actor and let’s not just make jokes,'” the Wolfs talent added.
However, Sandler insisted on keeping his nickname, adding: “I still call myself the Sandman; he [Clooney] can’t stop me.”
“He just is very protective over me. He’s a really nice guy. We would do all these scenes together and we’d get deep together and he’d say: ‘I just want people to recognize that’ and I’d say: ‘I’m OK, I like just working hard,’ and he’d say: ‘No.’ He’s very nice, he’s trying to look out for me,’” the Happy Gilmore star mentioned.
Jay Kelly will open in few cinemas on November 14 before arriving on Netflix on December 5.
