India wins toss and opt to ball first in the historic Asia Cup final | The Express Tribune

Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket burst spearheaded India’s bowling fightback as Pakistan were skittled for just 146 in the Asia Cup 2025 final at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
Opting to field, skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s call proved decisive as his attack recovered strongly after a fiery opening stand.
Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman launched Pakistan to 84 without loss by the 10th over, putting early pressure on India.
Farhan, who continued his fine run against Jasprit Bumrah, top-scored with 57 off 38 balls, striking five boundaries and three sixes. Fakhar added 46 from 35, laced with two fours and two sixes.
But once Varun Chakravarthy broke the stand by removing Farhan, the innings unraveled. Kuldeep Yadav struck in the 13th over to dismiss Saim Ayub (14), before running through the middle order in a decisive spell.
Pakistan lost six wickets in just 25 balls, including captain Salman Ali Agha and all-rounders Shaheen Afridi and Faheem Ashraf, slumping from 113 for 1 to 134 for 8.
Kuldeep finished with 4 for 30, while Axar Patel (2 for 20), Bumrah (2 for 26), and Chakravarthy (2 for 29) shared the spoils.
Earlier, India have already defeated Pakistan twice in earlier stages of the tournament, the final was expected to be a different contest altogether.
This is the first time that the two arch-rivals are meeting in the final of the Asia Cup final.
Pakistan qualified for the final after defeating Bangladesh by 11 runs in a crucial Super Four match, effectively a semi-final.
Historically, Pakistan and India have faced each other in five tournament finals across various competitions. Pakistan leads this rivalry with three wins, while India has emerged victorious twice.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, captain Salman expressed confidence in his team, saying: “We’re hopeful of a strong performance in the final. Our goal is to win the cup, and we won’t repeat past mistakes.”
He acknowledged the pressure both teams face and hinted that Pakistan may have saved its best batting for the final. The playing XI, he said, will be finalised after assessing pitch conditions.
Meanwhile, India are missing their key all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the important game.

Asia Cup final: Separate presenters at Pakistan vs India toss

DUBAI: The toss presentation for the highly anticipated ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 final between arch-rivals Pakistan and India went ahead with separate presenters for both captains.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was interviewed by Ravi Shastri, while Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha spoke with Waqar Younis.
The arrangement followed India’s insistence that their captain be interviewed only by an Indian presenter, rather than a neutral one as initially proposed by the organisers. Meanwhile, Agha was also interviewed by a Pakistani presenter.
The same format will continue during the post-match presentation ceremony, with each captain addressing questions exclusively from a presenter of his own country.
In a repeat of past encounters, Indian captain Yadav once again refused a customary handshake with Pakistan skipper Salman Agha at the toss, marking the third such snub as the arch-rivals locked horns in the high-pressure final of the Asia Cup.
The handshake snub comes in the backdrop of an ongoing row between the arch-rivals, stemming from the group-stage clash, which attracted considerable attention both on and off the field.

Van Dijk: Liverpool need to improve ‘quickly’

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged his team to “stay calm” after their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, but admits they will have to improve “pretty quickly” if they want to succeed this season.
The Premier League champions suffered their first defeat of the campaign at Selhurst Park thanks to a late strike from Palace substitute Eddie Nketiah. The result means title rivals Arsenal can close the gap on the league leaders to just two points with a victory against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
“[We’re] disappointed in our performance,” Van Dijk said after the game.
“Disappointed in the loss, but especially the way we went about it. I think if we got a draw here then we took already one point too much. That is the feeling that we have right now. “I don’t think there is any reason to worry, but we have to improve pretty quickly because obviously we play [against Galatasaray in the Champions League] in Turkey on Tuesday.
We have a very difficult game there as well, so we have to be ready.”
Having become the masters of scoring late goals this season, Liverpool thought they had managed to snatch a precious point against Palace when Federico Chiesa came off the bench to draw his team level in the 87th minute.
However, Oliver Glasner’s side could have put the game out of sight in the first half alone, with Alisson Becker making a succession of fine saves after Ismalia Sarr had opened the scoring.
“It was the basics that we didn’t do well,” Van Dijk said of his team’s first-half display. “Sometimes you can have these days. Hopefully, this is the only day this season that we do that.
“There is a reason they were 17, now 18, games unbeaten. They are very difficult to break down, very disciplined, they defend deep and they don’t mind that, and they have the quality on the break to hurt you.But it started all with ourselves. We were sloppy in possession, didn’t win our second ball fight, and we created momentum for them. They could have been three or four up by half-time.
“We are lucky that we have, in my opinion, the best goalkeeper in the world to save us. If we had a draw, we had one point too much.”

– Lindop: Liverpool need to learn after latest dramatic late finish
– Slot: Liverpool ‘deserved’ first loss of the season
The Liverpool defender added: “There are loads of challenges throughout the whole season. Everyone has to deal with it in their own way, but obviously as a team we have to deal with it as well.
“The biggest challenge now is to stay calm. I mentioned it many times: never get too high or too low. Just work and don’t listen to the outside world too much.
“You know when you can do better and today everyone knew that. We have another opportunity on Tuesday in a very interesting stadium, big crowd, Champions League, to turn it around again and focus on the next one and next one.”
