Lille GK saves 3 Roma penalties in wild sequence

AS Roma missed three straight attempts from the penalty spot late in the game as Lille upset the Italian club 1-0 in the Europa League on Thursday.
In a bizarre sequence, Roma was given three tries to equalize from the spot after the first two efforts from Artem Dovbyk were both saved by goalkeeper Berke Özer — only for the referee to order the penalty to be retaken each time because of encroachment.
Roma then switched penalty takers to Matìas Soulè, but Özer saved that one as well, diving to his right to punch the ball away in the 85th minute — nearly four minutes after Dovbyk had made his first attempt.
– Palace reach record unbeaten run with win over Dynamo Kiev
– Celtic have goal ruled out in Europa loss to Sporting Braga
Hakon Arnar Haraldsson had put Lille ahead with an angled shot in the sixth minute at Stadio Olimpico, which was enough for the French club to earn a second win in two games.
In other early games, Ricardo Horta unleashed a long-distance drive to beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and substitute Gabri Martínez added a late second as Braga beat Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow.
A precise strike by Giovani Lo Celso from the edge of the area and an own goal from Spanish defender Son gave Real Betis a 2-0 win away at Ludogorets.
Fenerbahce forward Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored when one-on-one with goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf early in the game and added the second with a deflected shot en route to a 2-1 win over Nice.
Bologna drew 1-1 at home against Freiburg after Riccardo Orsolini scored for the hosts on a rebound before Junior Adamu equalized from the spot.
Milan Smit scored two late goals as Go Ahead Eagles came from behind to beat Panathinaikos 2-1 in Athens.
Czech side Viktoria Plzeň recorded its first win, 3-0, over Swedish club Malmö in a game where both sides were reduced to 10 men.
In the Conference League, Crystal Palace marked its first game in a major European competition by beating Dynamo Kyiv 2-0. The victory extended the London team’s unbeaten run to a club record 19 games, stretching back to April.
Daniel Muñoz headed in Yéremy Pino’s cross and substitute Eddie Nketiah doubled the advantage in the 58th. Palace finished the game with 10 men after midfielder Borna Sosa received his second yellow card in the 76th minute, but it was another impressive performance for Oliver Glasner’s side which remains the last unbeaten team in the Premier League after beating defending champion Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday.
The FA cup winner was demoted to to the third-tier Conference League for breaching UEFA rules on club ownership.
Also, Rayo Vallecano celebrated its return to Europe after 25 years with a 2-0 win over newcomer Shkëndija from North Macedonia.
Polish club Jagiellonia beat Hamrun Spartans 1-0 as the first club from Malta in a European competition was reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute.
The Conference League uses the same 36-team league format as the Champions League and the Europa League. But teams play only six, not eight different opponents during the league phase.

Devils D Hughes: I’d love to play with both bros

NEWARK, N.J. — Two of the Hughes brothers are now under long-term contracts with the New Jersey Devils, after defenseman Luke Hughes signed a seven-year, $63 million contract extension Wednesday and rejoined his superstar brother Jack at training camp Thursday.
Could Quinn Hughes, star defenseman with the Vancouver Canucks, join his brothers in the near future?
Ever since Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said last April that Quinn “wants to play with his brothers,” there has been speculation about when and where that reunion might happen.
Luke and Jack are now both under contract in New Jersey until 2030, while Quinn will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
“I think the three of us would all love to play together someday. Whether it’ll happen or not, who knows? We’ll see,” Luke said Thursday. “But I know he loves Vancouver and he’s the captain there. We love being here. You never know. Never say never.”
The contract Luke signed this week carries a $9 million annual cap hit. The 22-year-old defenseman is entering his fourth NHL season and has 93 points in 155 games, along with two assists in four playoff games.
Luke missed a chunk of training camp during contract talks with the Devils. Quinn Hughes also missed part of the 2021-22 preseason during free agent contract talks with the Canucks before signing a six-year, $47.1 million deal with Vancouver. Luke said Quinn offered his perspective as talks with the Devils continued.
“[He said] just stay patient and get what you want. As a family, we decided the deal and we’re really happy of the outcome and really excited to be here for the next seven years,” Luke said.
Jack said he didn’t have much advice to give his brother, given that he’d never been through a “holdout” like Luke had.
“I think it was important for him to get a deal that he’s really comfortable with,” Jack said. “I know he’s going to be ready to go for the season no matter what and you never want to miss time. But most importantly you need a deal you’re comfortable with.”
On top of missing a chunk of training camp, Luke’s preparation for this season was interrupted with his recovery from shoulder surgery in May. Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said the team is taking that under consideration in working him back into the lineup.
Luke said he has been “bag [skating] myself” back home, skating five times a week to get into playing shape. In his first day back in camp, he skated in two consecutive practice sessions to start making up for lost time.
“That is the climb. It’s a bit of a unique situation where not only has he missed camp, but he’s also coming off of a major shoulder surgery since he played last,” Keefe said. “So we want to make sure we give him the appropriate time. But he looks good. He has been through all the medicals and testing that guys would normally go through at the beginning of camp, and he’s cleared.”
Keefe said he doesn’t see a reason why Luke won’t be ready for the Devils’ regular-season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 9.

Jags’ Walker has wrist surgery, could play vs. K.C.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker underwent left wrist surgery on Monday but there’s a chance he could play against Kansas City on Monday night.
“He will be listed as day-to-day,” coach Liam Coen said Thursday morning.
Walker was injured during the second quarter of the Jaguars’ 26-21 victory over San Francisco on Sunday. He walked to the sideline holding his wrist and did not return to the game.
Walker, the No. 1 overall pick in 2022, is second on the team with two sacks and has 12 tackles and one pass breakup. Walker has missed only two games in his career, both coming his rookie season.

In the biggest inning of his life, Fernando Cruz came through.
The New York Yankees were tied with the Boston Red Sox, 3-3, in the top of the seventh when Cruz came in with runners on first and second with nobody out.
Cruz finessed his way into not allowing a Red Sox runner to cross the plate, keeping the score tied. The Yanks eventually took the lead the following inning before forcing a decisive Game 3 on Thursday night in the Bronx.

Cruz entered this season with a 4.52 ERA but pitched to a 3.56 ERA, becoming a high-leverage reliever for the Bronx Bombers.
After getting Trevor Story to fly out to Trent Grisham with the bases loaded, Cruz went crazy in celebration. After the game, Cruz credited his faith for helping him get out of the tough jam.
“I have a powerful giant on my side, his name is Jesus Christ. I will deliver for Him, first of all,” Cruz said.
“It’s time to compete. It’s time to go after – just compete. I grab the ball, grab that white thing, and let’s go — you vs. me.”

2025 MLB PLAYOFF BRACKET: SCHEDULE, SCORES FOR FINAL DAY OF WILD CARD SERIES
Cruz caught a bunt attempt before Nick Sogard flied out to left. Jazz Chisholm Jr. saved a run by laying out on Masataka Yoshida’s infield hit, and then Story flied out to center to end the frame.
Austin Wells delivered the game-winning hit with a single, as Chisholm scored all the way from first after getting a head start on the 3-2 count.
Thursday marks the fifth do-or-die game between the Yanks and Sox in their history, joining the AL East championship in 1978, Game 7 in both 2003 and 2004, and the Wild Card Game in 2021. The Yankees won the first two, but Boston has taken home the last pair of games.
