Martin Short praises ex-girlfriend Gilda Radner: ‘Alive’
Martin Short has opened up about his memories of the late Gilda Radner, describing the comedy icon as “hilarious and alive and warm” during a recent industry event.
Speaking on Thursday, 7 May, at the Netflix Is a Joke festival in a conversation with David Letterman and Paul Shaffer, the 76-year-old actor reflected on the magnetic personality of his former girlfriend.
Short explained that when they first met in a 1972 Toronto production of Godspell, Radner was “exactly as wonderful as you’d hope,” noting that while every woman wanted to be her best friend, every man was eager to date her.
The Only Murders in the Building star recalled the chaotic atmosphere of the auditions, likening them to American Idol as hundreds of young hopefuls aiming for roles.
Short and Radner were cast alongside other future legends like Eugene Levy and Victor Garber, at a time when they were just kids thrilled to be doing something creative.
According to Short, Radner made an immediate impression, walking up to him at the very first rehearsal to introduce herself and proving to be instantly funny.
However, the production also set the stage for a complicated romantic crossroads for Short.
While he was dating Radner, he met her understudy, Nancy Dolman, whom he described as a huge talent and an incredible singer.
Short has previously admitted that he “loved Gilda,” but their relationship was a turbulent one defined by constant break-ups.
The transition between the two women happened remarkably fast; after one particular split from Radner, Short made a tennis date with Dolman, only for Radner to phone up a day later expecting to reconcile.
Ultimately, Short stayed with Dolman, and the couple married in 1980, remaining together for 36 years until her death in 2010.
In a tragic parallel to Radner’s own passing at the age of 42 in 1989, Dolman also died from ovarian cancer.
Short, who shared three adopted children with Dolman, has faced further heartbreak recently, with the family announcing in February 2026 that their daughter, Katherine, had also died at the age of 42.
Despite the years and the losses, Short’s fond memories of Radner’s vibrant spirit remain a testament to the close-knit bond formed during their early days in the industry.

Mother’s Day was a chance to get close for Cardi B, Stefon Diggs
Cardi B and Stefon Diggs put relationship rumours firmly to one side on Friday, showing up together at the Diggs Deep Foundation’s Mother’s Day wellness event on 9 May and putting on an affectionate display for the cameras.
In footage shared to social media by sports journalist Kelsey Nicole Nelson, the pair were all smiles as they posed together, with Diggs, 32, wrapping his arms around Cardi’s waist and planting kisses on the side of her hair.
Cardi, 33, looked back at him at one point making a kissy face.
She wore a body-hugging brown knit co-ord and strappy heeled sandals with a Chanel crossbody bag, while Diggs kept it casual in a pale pink hoodie and jean shorts.
At one point, Cardi was spotted singing along to Monaleo’s Putting Ya Dine as the event’s music played.
Neither Cardi nor the former New England Patriots wide receiver has officially confirmed the status of their relationship since they were first linked in February 2025.
But the signs have been there.
Diggs attended the 8 April stop of her Little Miss Drama tour in Washington D.C., where he was filmed dancing with his mother Stefanie Diggs while Cardi performed on stage.
After the show, the pair were spotted leaving her sold-out afterparty at Throw Social together.
Cardi has also made her protective instincts clear.
During a February concert, she called out rival rapper Bia after she made comments about Diggs having children with multiple women.
“Just because I ain’t f–king with my baby daddy, doesn’t mean you get to talk about my baby daddy!” she said on stage.
Cardi is also mother to Kulture, 7, Wave, 4, and Blossom, 19 months, from her marriage to ex Offset.
She and Diggs welcomed a son together in November.

Justin Timberlake pays Mother’s Day tribute to “greatest women” in life
Justin Timberlake has marked Mother’s Day with a warm tribute to the two most important women in his life, his wife Jessica Biel and his mum Lynn Harless.
The 45-year-old singer took to Instagram on 10 May to share a handful of family photos, keeping his caption simple but sweet: “The greatest women I know. Happy Mother’s Day.”
The post gave fans a rare peek into his home life, featuring a shot of Justin alongside Jessica and their two sons, Silas, 11, and Phineas, 5, as well as a loved-up selfie of the couple together.
He also reached into the archives to honour his mum, posting a throwback photo of a young Justin sitting on the sofa with Lynn, both of them grinning, the kind of candid, unhurried moment that says more than any caption could.
Jessica, 44, clearly appreciated the gesture.
She reshared her husband’s post to her Instagram Stories and responded with three heart emojis, simple, but said everything.
The tribute is very much in keeping with how Timberlake has spoken about his wife in recent years.
Last Mother’s Day, he called Jessica “a superwoman who puts up with all the boys,” adding, “We love you so much.”
The year before that, he put together an Instagram Reel, set to his own song Mirrors a nice touch, featuring clips of Jessica and their life at home, with the caption: “You do it ALL. We love you so much.”
The pair, who married in 2012, marked their 15th wedding anniversary last October, and by all accounts the affection runs both ways.
When Justin turned 45 in January, Jessica pulled out all the stops.
“I tried to spoil him,” she told Extra. “We filled the house with flowers and the kids made cards and we had a nice dinner with friends. It was perfect.”
Thirteen years of marriage, two kids, and they’re still writing each other love notes on the internet. Not bad at all.

Princess Kate shares emotional message on ‘complex motherhood’ for Mother’s Day
Princess of Wales has shared a new update on social media on Mother’s Day following this week’s garden party.
In a video shared on Instagram, the she reflected on her role as patron of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week came to a close.
The caption read: “Proud to be Patron of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. As Maternal Mental Health Awareness week draws to a close, it is importance to reflect on the experience of complex motherhood.
Thank you to Karen from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, and Erica from Her Circle, Chair of the North East Council for Complex Motherhood. Such a pleasure to see you at this week’s Garden Party.”
In the video, representatives from the organisation introduced themselves and spoke openly about their work supporting mothers facing a range of challenges.
They explained the focus of their project, saying: “We are working on a project for women experiencing complex motherhood, which has been defined as women going through challenges such as childhood trauma, substance use, and poverty.
But at the end of the day, all mothers experience some form of complexity, with mental health, of course, being one of them.
We know that many giving birth will experience a health problem during or after.
It is common; lots of people are going through this, but help is available.
Talk to other women, and there are lots of organisations out there. There are positive things that can be done to make it better and to reduce the suffering.”
