Messi, Miami frustrated in Toronto stalemate | The Express Tribune

MONTREAL:
Lionel Messi’s scoring streak came to an end on Saturday as Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw in their Major League Soccer clash with Toronto FC.
Argentina superstar Messi had gone into Saturday’s game in Toronto in blistering form, bagging five goals in his previous three appearances for Miami.
But though the 38-year-old carved out a string of promising openings, a superb performance from Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson prevented him from extending his recent goal spree.
Miami, who have already booked their postseason berth, appeared on course for all three points at BMO Field after Tadeo Allende headed home a Jordi Alba cross in first-half stoppage time to put Inter 1-0 up.
But Miami’s suspect defence was once again exposed in the second half, with a string of blunders gifting Djordje Mihailovic a close-range equaliser that made it 1-1 in the 60th minute.
Miami pressed relentlessly for a winner, but Johnson produced two fine saves to deny shots from Messi.
Messi continues to lead the MLS scoring charts with 24 goals in 23 matches.
Inter coach Javier Mascherano said Toronto goalkeeper Johnson had been the difference between the two teams.
“I think we deserved to win, we had the most real chances during the game, maybe we had 10-15 minutes in the second half that we were in a bit of confusion, but at the end we had the game under control,” Mascherano said. “I think their goalkeeper was the man of the match.
“It’s hard because we came here to win. We wanted to go up in the standings but we have to move forward. We have more four games, so we will try to win all the games and try to finish as high as possible.”
The draw leaves Miami in third place in the Eastern Conference with 56 points — four points behind leaders Philadelphia — but with a game in hand.

Ducks’ Moore breaks through in 2OT upset of PSU

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — For the first time all night, Dante Moore was overwhelmed. The Oregon quarterback paused his victory lap and bent over, staring down at the Beaver Stadium grass while trying his best to collect himself and hold back the tears.
In the moments immediately after his Oregon squad pulled off a 30-24 double-overtime triumph over No. 3 Penn State, Moore was emotionally spent. Ducks coach Dan Lanning, however, was practically vibrating after the stunning finish, brimming with pride that his No. 6 Ducks had what it took to win what he considers the best game he has ever been a part of in his career.
What it took was unbelievable poise from every player in his program, especially from Moore, his sophomore quarterback making just his fifth career road start.
The Ducks had the luxury of elite experience at the quarterback position over Lanning’s first three seasons in Eugene between Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel. On Saturday night, they showed everyone what they have in Moore.
“I think we’ve got the best quarterback in college football,” Lanning said.
Moore threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 35 yards, avoided turnovers and sacks and stayed in control in front of an announced crowd of 111,015, the second-largest in Penn State history. Lanning and his coaches put all their trust in Moore in a game loaded with high-pressure moments, including 18 third downs and seven fourth downs in which the Ducks went for it, converting five of them.
“It’s things you pray and dream about as a kid,” Moore said.
Lanning told his players all week long that the mindset necessary to defeat the Nittany Lions was death by a thousand cuts. No one play was going to knock out their foe. Every play and every cut mattered. That’s precisely how their battle played out.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Ducks went for the kill on a fourth-and-1, and running back Jordon Davison sliced through the Nittany Lion defense for an 8-yard touchdown that, with a 17-3 lead, looked likely to put away the game for good. But it would take many more cuts to eventually take down Penn State.
The Nittany Lions’ offense came to life with 142 yards and two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Then they needed just three plays to punch in the first touchdown in overtime.
Moore answered with a seven-play march that required him to pick up a fourth-and-1 with the game on the line by himself with a counter run. He picked up 3 yards to convert, then hit tight end Jamari Johnson on a shovel pass on the following play to tie the score.
Then, on the first play of the next drive, Moore evaded unblocked Penn State pass rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton and fired a sidearm throw to Gary Bryant Jr. for a quick 25-yard score. The Ducks’ two-point attempt failed, but all it took was one more cut. Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman intercepted Penn State’s Drew Allar on his first pass of the second overtime.
“Every cut matters, and eventually you hit the jugular,” Lanning said. “That was it right there.”
For Moore, it was a breakthrough moment that has been hard earned. The former No. 2 overall recruit was benched during his freshman season at UCLA in 2023, transferred to Oregon and spent last year out of the spotlight, redshirting and learning to operate the Ducks’ offense as their No. 2 QB behind Gabriel.
After outscoring opponents 203-37 through an easy 4-0 start, it was time for a real test. Teammates didn’t doubt that Moore was ready.
“The dude breeds excellence,” Oregon linebacker Bryce Boettcher said. “He’s just very composed. I mean, he’s 20 years old and the maturity out of him is incredible. Following up after Dillon Gabriel and Bo Nix, that’s no easy shoes to fill. He’s obviously his own person, leads in his own way and I love it. He’s a competitor and I’m glad to have him on our side.”
Lanning called the victory a growth moment not just for his quarterback but his entire Ducks squad. He felt they handled an “unbelievable” road environment with composure, making the White Out crowd a non-factor to the best of their ability.
Against an opponent that Lanning said he expects to face again, whether in the Big Ten title game or the College Football Playoff, Moore and his fellow Ducks didn’t flinch.
“It speaks volumes about how these guys can handle the stage,” Lanning said. “We said the White Out was really gonna be a white canvas for us today. We got an opportunity to paint our masterpiece, and those guys did it.”

Saturday breaks late-goal Premier Lge record

The Premier League is renowned for delivering late drama, but Saturday’s stoppage-time antics reached new levels.
According to Opta, the eight goals scored in the 90th minute (or later) in Saturday’s games were the most in a single day in the competition’s entire history.
Some of the goals were heartbreaking, some were exhilarating, some were downright comical. Where did each strike rate on the drama scale? Let’s take a look…

– Dawson: Struggling Brentford deepen Amorim’s Man United malaise
– Lindop: Liverpool had better learn from dramatic loss at Crystal Palace

Manchester City talisman Haaland had been searching for a goal all afternoon against Burnley, and finally got his moment after some fine buildup play from Jérémy Doku. That no doubt whetted the appetite of the big Norwegian, but more on that later…

Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Welbeck looked like he enjoyed this one, scoring his second goal of the afternoon from close-range and adding some cream to Brighton & Hove Albion‘s deserved 3-1 win over a shorthanded Chelsea.
6. Mathias Jensen, 95th minute vs. Manchester United

Classic nail-in-the-coffin type stuff from Brentford‘s classy midfielder Jensen. Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United side were already having a miserable day at the Gtech Community Stadium; Jensen’s 20-yard blast made it just that tiny bit worse. It’s as if United keeper Altay Bayindir wasn’t even there.
5. Eli Kroupi, 93rd minute vs. Leed United

Leeds thought they had done enough to get the win against Andoni Iraola’s plucky Bournemouth outfit, but the home team made the mistake of giving away a free kick with only seconds to go. Sure enough, after the set-piece was headed across goal, Kroupi was on hand to steer his shot past keeper Karl Darlow and leave Leeds wondering if those two points dropped will be crucial come the end of the season.

Brighton’s second goal in this list but it’s definitely the more important one, with De Cuyper turning in Mats Wieffer‘s nod across goal to give Brighton the lead. Chelsea had grimly hung on with 10 men for most of the second half after Trevoh Chalobah‘s 53rd-minute red card, but the Seagulls would not be denied. Cue raucous scenes in the away end.
3. Erling Haaland, 93rd minute vs. Burnley
Just incredible. pic.twitter.com/SPh7he1aMV

Yes, the fifth goal in a 5-1 rout doesn’t usually rate so high in the drama stakes, but the slapstick defending makes Haaland’s second of the day worth rewatching again and again. Burnley defenders Maxime Estève and Hjalmar Ekdal both jump for the same innocuous high ball 40 yards from their own goal, only to turn it right into the path of the lurking Haaland. And if there’s one player in Premier League history you don’t want to leave with that sort of time and space in front of goal, it’s Haaland. He duly converts, but watch for the remonstrations between the Burnley defence after (and even while) the City striker scores his goal. Remarkable stuff.
The late, late equaliser from Joao Palhinha 🙌 pic.twitter.com/smrAIokrBG
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) September 27, 2025
Heartbreak for Wolves as they were denied their first win of the season after battling so well against Tottenham Hotspur for 93 minutes. Unfortunately for Vitor Pereira’s side, who are languishing in last place in the Premier League, Palhinha stuck a deliciously curled effort from outside the box after some impressive control from Pape Matar Sarr.
Marc Guéhi assist, Eddie Nketiah finish.
Beating Liverpool to remain unbeaten right at the end. Scenes.

The football gods set the scene perfectly at Selhurst Park: defending league champions Liverpool against FA Cup holders Crystal Palace, both teams unbeaten so far this season, and a pinch of transfer spice with Marc Guéhi‘s failed move to the Reds lingering in the background too. Liverpool had done well to fight back from a goal down with Federico Chiesa‘s leveller in the 87th minute, but it would be Palace that would have the last laugh. Nketiah, a youth product of Liverpool’s title rivals Arsenal no less, fired home an unstoppable drive in the 97th minute, assisted by … you guessed it … Marc Guéhi.
