Psychiatrist weighs in as “The Summer I Turned Pretty” fan enthusiasm turns toxic
The debate over who the main character in creator Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” should end up with is heating up as the final episodes of the third season approach – but fan enthusiasm is starting to spill into hostility.
Prime Video’s hit romance series has captivated audiences as it follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin who finds herself in a love triangle with brothers Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher competing for her attention. Passionate fans have broken off into two dueling camps: #TeamJeremiah versus #TeamConrad. And they’re taking to social media to battle over which love interest should ultimately win Belly’s heart.
But some of these so-called fans are turning on the actors themselves.
Last month, actors Christopher Briney (Conrad) and Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah) told “CBS Mornings” they often have to remind fans that they’re just playing a role.
“It’s a story that people can relate to and love. Yeah, we’re just grateful that people are passionate about the story we’re telling,” Casalegno said. Briney added, “You root for both of these characters at times.”
Lola Tung, who plays Belly, also admitted the rivalry gets a bit too intense at times.
“When people have an attachment to the characters, they want to see it come together at the end. I’m so grateful that they care so much, but people get a little scary about it. Please don’t threaten to kill someone if something doesn’t go your way — I promise you, it’s not that serious,” she told Teen Vogue.
“There is a line between fiction and reality”
Last week, Prime Video launched a social media campaign called, “The Summer We Started Acting Normal Online,” urging viewers to keep the conversation kind and highlighted its zero tolerance policy for bullying and hate speech.
“The show isn’t real but the people playing the characters are,” Prime Video wrote.
Board-certified psychiatrist and author Sue Varma said she is “blown away” that a network had to step in and tell fans to simmer down and the show is fiction. Varma says fans’ emotional attachment may point to a larger societal problem.
“There is a line between fiction and reality. And I feel as if these lines are becoming really blurred when people are projecting their anger, their hatred, their harassment and resentment onto fictional characters,” she said.
Varma said this indicates that there is perhaps a “deep void in our society right now” with people longing for human connection.
She explained these fan behaviors are a sign of a psychological phenomenon known as parasocial relationships – or one-sided bonds with media figures. Varma adds the anonymity of social media emboldens fans to exhibit bad behavior.

Robert Pattinson jokes about competing with Gen Z
Robert Pattinson jokes he wants to play teenage roles again.
The 39-year-old actor recently sat down with his Die My Love costar Jennifer Lawrence, 35, for a new video interview with Vanity Fair.
The pair discussed everything from Twilight to generational labels, with Pattinson joking that he’d happily steal a few jobs from younger actors if given the chance.
At one point, Lawrence asked if he’d ever reprise his role as Edward Cullen, but only if directors Josh and Benny Safdie were behind it. “Oh yeah, for sure,” he replied.
Lawrence laughed and told him, “I don’t think you should,” to which, Pattinson doubled down, “It would be great! I like taking jobs from younger actors. I do. I want to play 17 again.”
He then jokingly referenced Zac Efron’s 2009 comedy 17 Again, adding, “There’s a movie. Zac’s movie.”
Lawrence then teased the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire star about his supposed Gen Z tendencies.
“I did think it was insane when you cold FaceTimed me,” she said. “I was like, ‘It’s crazy to cold FaceTime somebody,’ and you were like, ‘No, it’s Gen Z.’”
“As in, I’m Gen Z,” Pattinson replied confidently.
“Do you wish you were Gen Z?” Lawrence asked. “I am,” he insisted, at which she shot back, “You’re not Gen Z, you’re a millennial… but I believe that you believe that you’re Gen Z.”
When pressed about his birth year, Pattinson went on to joke, “it doesn’t matter.”

Alex Cooper apologizes to Taylor Swift for bizarre admission
Alex Cooper is not holding back when it comes to her love for Taylor Swift.
As per a new report from PEOPLE Magazine, the Call Her Daddy host opened up about her deep-rooted Swiftie devotion during the 7th November episode of Owen Thiele’s podcast In Your Dreams, even joking that Taylor Swift was her “s**** awakening for women.”
During this chat, Cooper, 31, could not help but point out a poster of Swift’s Fearless album hanging behind Thiele in the studio.
Once she spotted it, the nostalgia hit instantly and said, “I can’t stop staring and looking at the Fearless album behind your head.”
She continued, “Those songs changed my life. Like, Fearless was my era of girlhood where I was really starting to like boys—”
“Before you liked girls?” Thiele teased.
“We’re getting there,” Cooper quipped, before revealing how deeply she clung to Swift’s music during her adolescence.
“I just really found that I was such a loser and [Swift] was my connector of like, ‘He doesn’t love me.’ But I almost romanticized guys hating me at one point — like I thought it was cool that they were turning me down because then I had Taylor to listen to.”
“You were in love with Taylor,” Thiele laughed.
“Yeah, she was my s***** awakening for women,” Cooper joked.
“Sorry, Taylor, that’s weird.”
Cooper’s enthusiasm for Swift is nothing new as previously in an interview with PEOPLE, she named Swift as one of her top dream podcast guests.
“Oh my God, I would say two people — either Ms. Taylor Swift or Rihanna. Period,” she shared at the time.
“I feel like those two women have built such incredible empires and I respect both of them so much, and I would be honored to sit down with either of them.”

David Harbour weighs in on ultimate event which reshaped his career
David Harbour is reflecting on the role that transformed his life.
In a recent conversation with PEOPLE Magazine, the actor opened up about how Stranger Things, which premiered on July 15, 2016, became the seismic shift that altered the entire direction of his career.
“None of that would be happening without this role,” Harbour said.
“This role changed the landscape. It was like an earthquake in my life.”
He went on to explain that the show’s unlikely beginnings and massive global response completely redefined his path.
“I mean, we shot that season. I loved it. It was so simple and kind of low budget when it started, and then people just fell in love with it and really attached to it and it just blew up in a way that I never imagined,” he shared.
“And so in terms of opportunities to tell stories and to create art, I think it’s given me more than any other role in my life for sure.”
Fans will know Harbour is set to return as Hopper in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which picks up in the fall of 1987.
According to the official synopsis, Vecna “has vanished,” with his plans and whereabouts unknown.
Complicating matters, Hawkins has been placed under military quarantine as the government intensifies its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding.
“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread,” the synopsis reads.
“The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”
