Treasury, opposition agree on Nasir Abbas as Senate opposition leader
- Govt, oppostion senators discuss matter in Senate, says Tarar.
- Zafar also wrote to Senate chairman about opposition leader.
- Says vacant post raising questions about parliamentary system.
The treasury and opposition benches have agreed on the name of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) chief Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as leader of the opposition in the Senate, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Barrister Ali Zafar said on Monday.
This development came a week after Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai was appointed leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.
Talking to the media, the PTI leader said Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and senators from the treasury and opposition benches had consulted on the appointment of the leader of the opposition in the Senate.
Confirming the development, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the MWM chief — an ally of the PTI — would be the opposition leader in the Senate, adding that a notification in this regard was being issued.
The post has been lying vacant since August last year, when then-opposition leader in the upper house of the parliament Shibli Faraz was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) following his conviction in cases related to riots on May 9, 2023.
The PTI parliamentary leader in the Senate, earlier, penned a letter to the Senate chairman, urging the appointment of a leader of the opposition in the upper house of the parliament.
The PTI leader told the Senate chairman that his party has nominated MWM chief for the post and urged that he be appointed as the opposition leader in the Senate without any delay.
Zafar said the office of the opposition leader was crucial in a parliamentary democracy, adding that the position was essential for effective governance, constitutional oversight and transparency in the parliamentary system.
The vacant post of leader of the opposition in the Senate is raising questions about the parliamentary system, the PTI leader added.
He noted that without a leader of the opposition, the House remained institutionally incomplete.

Helen Flanagan closes the door on ex fiance’s drama
Helen Flanagan has made a firm request to her fans to stop sending messages about her ex, Scott Sinclair, following their nasty feud taking a dramatic turn.
The pair have been embroiled in a bitter co-parenting row after the former former Corrie actress, 35, blasted the footballer, 36, for failing to turn up to their son’s nativity, despite the fact she spent Christmas apart from their three children.
This comes after reports that Scott had allegedly asked Helen to move out of the £1.5M six-bedroom home they previously shared after communication between them ‘completely broken down’.
Taking to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, Helen shared a video insisting she ‘didn’t care’ about her former fiancé and wanted fans to stop contacting her about him.
She said: ‘I’ve been getting messages as well, quite a lot of DMs about the whereabouts of the father of my kids’.
‘Please, I really don’t care. No one needs to DM me and tell me his personal business. I’m spared of that now’.
The house, which is Scott’s name, was put on the market last year, and it’s now thought that he believes Helen needs to move into a smaller property as he wants to stop paying the maintenance.
Helen shares Matilda, 10, and Delilah, seven, along with son Charlie, four, with ex-fiancé Scott, but they split in 2022 after 13 years together.

Jennifer Lopez ‘rude’ glambot moment unmasked after major backlash
Jennifer Lopez has been defended by the director who shot her viral glambot moment from the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet, which was later termed “rude” after major online speculation.
Cole Walliser, who usually films the glambot series for E! News, reflected on the video seen around the world, saying that “it didn’t feel rude”.
“I didn’t take it personally, it didn’t feel rude in that moment,” he said in a recent TikTok message.
“One, she’s just down to business… she’s ready to go inside, she knew what she was going to do when she got into the position and I think it was just, like, unfortunate that the position was facing away from me,” the Canadian director said.
To recall, J.Lo sparked widespread retaliation from social media users after she was seen seemingly ignoring Walliser as he greeted her and directed her for the glambot.
One of the top comments on the post, published four days ago, read, “She didn’t even speak to him!!!!!”
While another pointed out, “And mind you this is HIS camera”.
Despite the criticism, Cole Walliser reiterated that Jennifer Lopez was “just down to business” as everyone was running “late” on the red carpet at the time.
