Vol for life: UT gives Barnes, 71, lifetime contract
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee wants to make sure Rick Barnes stays with the Volunteers as long as he wants to coach the men’s basketball team.
Athletic director Danny White announced Thursday that Barnes has signed essentially a lifetime contract with Tennessee.
“Rick has taken our program to unprecedented heights, and we are absolutely thrilled to have him continue coaching on Rocky Top for the rest of his career,” White said. “He has constructed this program the right way, achieving elite-level success on the court while also ensuring that all our players excel off the court.”
Barnes, who turned 71 in July, last signed an extension in September 2023 that took him through the 2027-28 season. The contract announced Thursday automatically extends Barnes’ deal for a year every April 15 starting in 2028.
Kansas gave men’s coach Bill Self a lifetime contract in 2021 and added to that in 2023. UConn women’s coach Geno Auriemma, now 71, got a five-year extension through 2029 in June 2024.
Barnes said it’s an honor and blessing to serve as Tennessee’s men’s basketball coach. He thanked university officials for their continued belief in the program.
“Tennessee basketball would not be where it is today without the consistent efforts of so many players, coaches and staff members whom I am forever indebted to,” Barnes said. “Their relentless dedication and the unrivaled support of Vol Nation are truly why we have been so successful.”
Barnes is 232-109 (66.4%) in 10 seasons with Tennessee, including 112-67 in Southeastern Conference play. He has won at least 25 games in six seasons with four Sweet 16s, four top-10 finishes, three SEC championships and two Elite Eight berths.
The Vols have made seven straight NCAA tournaments, the fourth-longest active streak in the country recognized by the NCAA. They also are one of two teams to reach the past three Sweet 16s and past two Elite Eights.
Tennessee has been ranked in the Associated Press’ Top 25 the past four years with 80 straight appearances, the second-longest active streak in the nation.
Barnes also currently is the active Division I leader with 836 wins over 38 seasons as a head coach.

TRENDING RUMORS
– Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool are monitoring the situation of Bournemouth and USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams, according to The Daily Mail. Adams, 27, has made three appearances in the Premier League since returning from injury in the 0-0 draw against West Ham last month, and it is reported that all three Premier League clubs are considering a move for him in the summer. An offer worth around £40 million could be enough to land him, but any deal isn’t expected to take place until after the FIFA World Cup.
– Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Liverpool have made contact with Bayern Munich regarding a €100 million move for winger Michael Olise, according to TEAMtalk. The Bundesliga side have reportedly dismissed inquiries to sign the 24-year-old from all three clubs, with Real Madrid and Barcelona also monitoring the situation, and Olise reportedly viewing LaLiga as a preferable destination. Meanwhile, Florian Plettenberg says that the Reds are set to change their focus to 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is seen as a more feasible signing at around €80 million. His impressive campaign of nine goals and five assists in 23 league matches has seen him linked with several teams across Europe.
– Bayern Munich are interested in Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. Footmercato reports that the Bundesliga side have identified the 27-year-old as a potential future replacement for Harry Kane, 32, with manager Vincent Kompany having been impressed by his performances this season. It is reported that clubs in Saudi Arabia remain keen on Osimhen, who has scored 17 goals in 25 matches for the Lions across all competitions since joining them permanently from Napoli for a fee of €75 million in the summer.
– Barcelona are ready to step up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven. Sport reports that scouts have been sent to watch the 24-year-old as the Blaugrana look to acquire a left-footed center back, who is seen as a potential alternative to Internazionale‘s Alessandro Bastoni. Van de Ven has continued to be linked with an exit from Spurs amid the club’s poor run of form in the Premier League — they currently sit four points above the relegation zone ahead of their match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
– Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi is stalling on signing a new contract and hopes to join a team in the Premier League, according to Bild. It is reported that the 24-year-old’s representatives have requested the inclusion of a release clause into any potential new deal at Signal Iduna Park, but the Bundesliga club are losing patience after failing to make any progress in negotiations. Adeyemi, who has previously been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, will enter the final year of his deal in June.

Miami (Ohio) beats Toledo to extend 30-game winning streak
OXFORD, Ohio — Peter Suder scored 19 points, Antwone Woolfolk added 14 and No. 19 Miami (Ohio) closed to within a victory of a perfect regular season with a 74-72 win over Toledo on Tuesday night that extended the RedHawks’ season-opening winning streak to 30 games.
The RedHawks (17-0 Mid-American Conference) remain the only undefeated team in Division I men’s basketball. They’re only the fourth team in the past 35 years to start 30-0, joining 2013-14 Wichita State, 2014-15 Kentucky and 2020-21 Gonzaga.
With the victory, Miami claimed its first MAC regular-season title since 2004-05, extended the best start in program history and added to its school record for wins in a season. Miami also boasts the best start and longest win streak in MAC history.
Brant Byers added 13 points and Luke Skaljac chipped in 12 for the RedHawks, who extended their home winning streak to 31 games in front of a sellout crowd of 10,640 at Millett Hall. That home mark matches Duke for the longest in the nation.
Leroy Blyden Jr. led Toledo (16-4, 10-7) with 21 points and Sonny Wilson added 13.
Miami was coming off a 69-67 win over Western Kentucky on Friday night, when it needed a buzzer-beater from freshman Trey Perry. In Tuesday’s game, the RedHawks jumped out to an early double-digit lead against the Rockets and never trailed.
Toledo cut the deficit to one on four occasions and looked as though it would take the lead on an Austin Parks drive to the basket with nine minutes left, but Miami’s Eian Elmer stuffed him at the rim and hit a 3-pointer a few seconds later to push the lead back to four points.
The Rockets trailed by two points and had the ball with 13 seconds left but turned it over with less than a second to play. It was the RedHawks’ seventh game decided by three points or fewer, tied for the most to keep a perfect season alive since 1948-49.
The victory gave the RedHawks their first season sweep of Toledo since the 1996-97 season, and it ran their series winning streak to three in a row overall after losing 22 straight from 2012 to 2024.
