What Bryce Young’s late-game magic means for Panthers’ postseason: ‘Nothing really fazes him’
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young lumbered his way to the podium earlier this week, taking short, slow steps. He showed no emotion, so you couldn’t tell he was preparing for his first NFL playoff game any more than you could when he was benched last season.
Say what you want about Young’s inconsistency in games, but he’s consistent in everything he does before and after them.
Coach Dave Canales almost laughed on Thursday when asked if the top pick of the 2023 draft had done anything out of the ordinary preparing for Saturday’s wild-card game against the Los Angeles Rams (12-5), the first playoff appearance for Carolina (8-9) since 2017 and the first at Bank of America Stadium since 2015.
“Bryce is really consistent in terms of his prep, our normal conversations throughout the week,” Canales said. “He goes out there to practice and he just continues to lead the group and make sure we get to the right play.
“His demeanor stays pretty even, which is why he’s performed really well in critical situations, end-of-game situations, fourth down and those types of things.”
The Panthers lost their final two regular-season games, but they were awarded their postseason berth through a tiebreaker, as the Atlanta Falcons beating the New Orleans Saints on the final day of the season was the deciding factor in Carolina winning the NFC South crown.
Still, Canales and his team know Young will operate as if it’s business as usual.
“Bryce has grown in a million different ways,” running back Chuba Hubbard said. “But one thing about him, he’s always been cool in those moments since the day he got here.”
Since being drafted No. 1 in 2023, Young’s career has been defined by inconsistency and resiliency. Uneven performances played a role in Carolina failing to win back-to-back games since mid-October. But 12 times in his career — including six this season — Young has led the Panthers to a fourth-quarter or overtime game-winning drive.
The six comebacks tie him for most in the NFL this season. One of those was the Week 13 victory over the Rams — his wild-card opponent this week — when Young completed 15 of 20 pass attempts for 206 yards and three touchdowns and had a career-best 147.1 passer rating.
Young’s history of leading late-game comebacks began in high school with a thrilling win over IMG Academy and continued in college when he helped Alabama stave off Auburn in the 2021 Iron Bowl.
As the Panthers prepare to host the Rams (4:30 p.m. ET, Fox), all eyes will be on Young and how he performs — because it will set the tone for what comes next.
The Panthers, according to league sources close to the situation, plan to pick up Young’s fifth-year contract option this spring. But they haven’t seen enough to begin thinking about whether a potential extension could be on the horizon unless Young convinces them during the playoffs — where Carolina begins as 10.5-point underdogs to the Rams, per DraftKings Sportsbook.
Despite the long odds, those who have coached and played alongside Young believe he is prepared to rise to the occasion just as he has so often in fourth-quarter comebacks.
“We won the game because of Young,” said Bill O’Brien, Young’s Alabama offensive coordinator in 2021 and now the head coach at Boston College. “He was amazing. One of his greatest traits is he’s very poised.”
YOUNG AND THE Alabama offense that averaged 39.9 points in 2021 were lifeless until 1:32 remained in the Iron Bowl. Young, in his first year as the starter, had been sacked eight times and the Crimson Tide trailed archrival Auburn 10-3.
Then Young came alive.
He led Alabama on a 12-play, 97-yard drive, capped by a 28-yard, game-tying touchdown pass to Ja’Corey Brooks with 24 seconds left in regulation. Young would go on to lead Bama to a 24-22 win in quadruple overtime.
Young had shown that sort of fourth-quarter magic in high school, too, when he engineered his first game-winning drive for Mater Dei High School in 2018. He led a nearly perfect nine-play, 75-yard series that ended with him faking an inside handoff and sprinting left for a 5-yard touchdown run to end IMG Academy’s 40-game win streak.
He carried that into the pros after Carolina drafted him No. 1 in 2023. Twelve of Young’s 14 career wins have come near the end of regulation or overtime, the most of any quarterback since he entered the league. At 24, he’s the youngest quarterback to orchestrate 11 game-winning drives before turning 25, passing Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills.
That includes beating the Rams in Week 13, when Young threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with 6:43 remaining.
Young’s prowess on game-winning drives, however, should come with an asterisk.
Unlike Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff and Bo Nix, who each have 10 game-winning drives since 2023, Young hasn’t had the luxury of playing with the lead often in the fourth quarter. In 42 of his 44 career starts, the Panthers have been tied or trailed at some point in the final period.
Carolina has trailed entering the fourth quarter in 32 of those games, going 5-27. The next closest quarterback to Young is Geno Smith, who has trailed in 28 games over that span.
Young’s inconsistent play is a significant reason the Panthers have trailed so often late in games.
Most of his stats this season rank in the bottom half of the league. He finished the regular season 22nd out of 28 qualified quarterbacks in QBR (47.7). He ranked 21st in passing yards (3,011), 20th in completion percentage (64), 26th in yards per attempt (6.3), 25th in attempts of 15-plus air yards (16%) and 27th in QBR when blitzed (44).
Despite the comebacks, Young’s QBR when the game is on the line hasn’t been great. He ranks 16th in the final two minutes of regulation and 13th in the final five. That’s better than his baseline but not enough to overshadow the rest of his profile.
Yet Young’s teammates continue to believe in him and his growth as a quarterback when it matters most.
“Every single time it’s the ‘got to have [it] moment,’ that’s what he does,” guard Austin Corbett said. “He understands pressure and understands it’s also a privilege, and that’s where he thrives.”
O’BRIEN BELIEVES YOUNG’S ability to overcome adversity and his understanding of the game will allow him to develop into a more consistent quarterback with more talent around him.
“I don’t think he worries about anything,” O’Brien said. “Nothing really fazes him.”
How Young handled being benched after an 0-2 start in 2024, his first under coach Dave Canales, epitomizes that ability. Since returning as Carolina’s starter in Week 8 of 2024, Young has averaged 196.7 passing yards per game and completed 63% of his passes for 38 touchdowns to 17 interceptions. He has a 12-14 record and a QBR of 52.
That’s a significant improvement from his 2-16 record before the benching, when he had 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions and was averaging 176 passing yards per game for a QBR of 32.
He has improved, but he has not put together reliably strong performances and wins. He had a franchise-record 448 yards passing in Week 11 against Atlanta and a career-low 54 in Week 17 against Seattle.
“In this league, you’ve got to turn the page,” Young said after his poor outing against Seattle. “Good and bad comes with sports. That’s the maturity you have to have at this level.”
Canales called Young’s ability to compartmentalize and move on from adverse situations “special.”
“It’s really important for the big picture, especially when you’re standing in front of the group [saying] this drive’s going to be a touchdown drive, this next play’s going to be a big one,” he said. “To have that kind of salesmanship, it’s really important for the quarterback to have that.”
YOUNG’S BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT since his rookie season has been pre-snap reads, something O’Brien said was special during the quarterback’s college career. It has helped Young make plays even when protection breaks down, particularly in clutch situations, with big runs and throws.
“It’s a learning curve for a lot of quarterbacks,” offensive coordinator Brad Idzik said. “Bryce, he’s taking all these things in and continues to really grow with this offense and really push the guys forward of, ‘Hey, we need to all buy in to this pre-snap stuff that we’re trying to do to make sure that we give ourselves the best chance to take advantage of the matchups.'”
Idzik noted the 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16, when some of Young’s biggest plays came on crucial third or fourth downs with pressure looks. He loved the way Young navigated protection and route concepts.
“He’s as calm as it gets under pressure,” Idzik said.
O’Brien said Young’s pre-snap reads play a big part in his ability to throw through the “trees” of big linemen despite being listed as 5-foot-10. He said that’s why former Alabama coach Nick Saban wasn’t fazed by Young’s size when recruiting him.
“He understands what’s happening pre-snap and then he’s able to make good, good decisions most of the time,” O’Brien said. “He can anticipate, which is one of the biggest, most important traits for a quarterback.
“He’s got a very quick release, so the ball is out before a guy can get his hands up to bat it down. Even when the guy’s hands are up, he can find a lane. He’s amazing at that.”
O’Brien credits Saban for putting all his quarterbacks, particularly Young, in adverse situations during practice.
“He’s able to use that pre-snap read to gain a lot of information,” O’Brien said. “One year [2021] we were playing Arkansas. They were dropping eight and rushing three. He broke the school record for passing yards [559 plus five touchdowns].
“I saw that [in the Week 16 Tampa game]. He was in the gun and using his cadence to gain information, and then zip it out there on a one-on-one.”
Young had only 191 yards passing in that victory, but he threw two touchdowns and had a 102.5 passer rating. Pre-snap reads were key.
“He’s done a great job this year of adding that to his tool belt,” Idzik said.
THREE PANTHERS QUARTERBACKS have won a playoff game: Jake Delhomme (5), Cam Newton (3) and Kerry Collins (1). Joining that list will be Young’s next challenge.
That’s why Canales and others say the pressure Young faced this season will benefit him long term, regardless of how far the Panthers go in the playoffs.
“That’s when things really ramp up,” O’Brien said. “So yeah, winning a playoff game will be important early on in his career.”
That’s easier said than done. Quarterbacks starting their first playoff game have a 72-94 record, according to ESPN Research.
Even future Hall of Famers had to wait for their first playoff win. Peyton Manning didn’t get his until his third NFL season. The same goes for Joe Montana. John Elway didn’t win his until his fourth.
Young isn’t looking that far ahead. He is focused on the wild-card game against the Rams, where he would benefit from a balanced offense like the Panthers had in the Week 13 win, when running back Rico Dowdle and Hubbard combined for 35 carries and 141 of the team’s 164 rushing yards.
Carolina has totaled 118 rushing yards in its past two games, including 19 in the 16-14 Week 18 loss to the Bucs.
The Panthers believe their quarterback is ready to meet the moment the playoffs offer.
“No one’s more calm in clutch moments,” said Frank Reich, who was Carolina’s coach when it drafted Young. “Always has been … always will be.”

Could Real Madrid be open to letting Vinicius Jr. leave?
Madrid would like Vinicius Jr. to stay and sign a new contract, and that remains the player’s preference too, multiple sources have told ESPN. But at the same time, there are more doubts about his future than ever before. And some sources aren’t ruling out a departure in the summer.
Talks over a new deal — with his contract up in 2027 — have been stalled since last May. Vinicius is in poor form, with no goals in his last 16 games. He has been whistled by Madrid fans, and his relationship with coach Xabi Alonso has been strained. Sources close to the Brazil forward believe there will be no contract agreement before the 2026 World Cup, with no talks expected sooner, which would mean Vinicius entering the final year of his contract. Is that a risk Madrid are willing to take?
The Bernabéu crowd’s treatment of the player is not a surprise, sources close to him said, blaming the Spanish media for their coverage of the saga. The only solution to the stand-off is viewed as Vinicius rediscovering his form and the team’s all-round game improving, reducing the tension around the side and coach Alonso. That would open up a scenario where Madrid and the player’s camp could both justify reaching a compromise agreement.
Previous interest from Saudi Arabia has cooled, and Vinicius would not favor a move there, sources said, preferring — in the event of a move — to join a top European team. Despite links in recent days, there has been no official approach from Chelsea, sources close to the player told ESPN. — Alex Kirkland, Gustavo Hofman, Rodrigo Faez and Rodra
But are Chelsea interested?
Most top clubs would hold an interest in a player of that caliber and it has been at least five minutes since Chelsea signed a winger … But club sources have told ESPN that they are expecting a quiet January as they focus on their summer plans and the Blues would have to create both the space in the squad and the requisite finances to do a deal of that size.
You can rarely rule Chelsea out of a transfer like this given their proclivity for a deal, but it seems highly unlikely this month as things stand. — James Olley

Have Arsenal suddenly entered the running for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi?
Not exactly. Guéhi has been running down his contract for the past 18 months and during that time, leading clubs from across Europe have lodged an interest in the center back, including Arsenal. Crystal Palace were steadfast in their refusal to let him go until the end of the 2025 summer window, when reluctantly accepting he would not sign a new contract and agreeing a £35 million deal with Liverpool, only for it to collapse on deadline day.
With his contact up in 2026, Palace want to avoid losing Guéhi for nothing in the summer and have signaled a willingness to listen to offers. But Liverpool are yet to return to the table, believing they can sign him on a free transfer at the end of the season. Consequently, others are sensing a more immediate opportunity.
Arsenal have asked to be kept informed of the situation this month — and that is significant — yet they signed Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera in the summer and don’t appear to have space in the squad to do a deal now, despite recent injuries. But with the Premier League title in sight, could they resist one more addition if the circumstances arose? — Olley
Are Man City and Liverpool still interested in Guéhi?
A January move for Guéhi wasn’t really on City’s radar, but that was before they lost Josko Gvardiol and Rúben Dias to injury. Throw in John Stones‘ continued absence (and the likelihood that he’s leaving in the summer, anyway) and doubts over Nathan Aké‘s ability to stay fit and you can understand why it’s suddenly become appealing.
City were looking at Guéhi for the summer because it’s very rare that market opportunities like that come up. If there’s a possibility that they could bring it forward for an acceptable fee then they’ll look at it. It would certainly solve a big problem for Pep Guardiola. — Rob Dawson
Guéhi’s summer move to Liverpool was so advanced that he had already undergone the first part of his medical when Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug.
Liverpool were prepared to pay a transfer fee of £35 million to land the defender back on deadline day, but had planned to revisit the deal next summer when Guéhi will be a free agent. However, while Liverpool are anticipating a quiet January, they could be forced into action should City make a bid, and they have previous for bringing forward their summer plans to ensure they land their top targets. — Beth Lindop

Man United have no manager, but will they let Kobbie Mainoo, Joshua Zirkzee or Manuel Ugarte leave?
United won’t do any business before their three AFCON absentees — Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui — return to Old Trafford, but once they are back in the squad, United will listen to offers for Zirkzee and Ugarte. Mainoo won’t be going anywhere this month.
The issue with both Ugarte and Zirkzee, however, is their wages and the reluctance of clubs to foot the salary bills. Ugarte is on substantial wages, having arrived at United from Paris Saint-Germain, while the club would expect a significant fee and/or wage commitment for Zirkzee. The overall cost of Zirkzee’s transfer to United was in the region of £50 million due to fee and agent commission after his 2024 arrival from Bologna. — Mark Ogden
There’s an acceptance that Zirkzee and Ugarte aren’t good enough to be part of United’s long-term plans. But they’re part of a very thin squad and there are games to play to get back into Europe next season.
If they were to leave in January, they would probably need to be replaced and United are more focused on the summer window. Roma are interested in Zirkzee, although there hasn’t yet been any club-to-club contact. — Dawson
Are Paris Saint-Germain going to do anything this month?
Luis Enrique is very happy with his squad, which won yet another trophy with the Trophée des Champions (the French version of the Super Cup) on Thursday. The injured players (Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos) are fully fit now so there is not really much need for new arrivals.
If a player were to leave then he would be replaced, but the Parisians are already working on their summer plans. They will make a move for the Lille prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi. The defensive midfielder, 18, is an amazing talent and PSG see him as the successor to Fabián Ruiz.
They also like two young talents from Portugal: Benfica striker Anisio Cabral, 17, has a release clause which is already €60m and he was the top goal scorer in the last U17 World Cup; and FC Porto starting right back Alberto Costa, whose transfer is valued at around €25 million. — Julien Laurens
Barcelona are set to sign João Cancelo on loan, but do they really want a center back? And will goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen leave?
Barça coach Hansi Flick wanted a center back this month but he will have to make do with full back Cancelo. The Portugal international offers depth in the full back positions, while his arrival could potentially allow Jules Koundé to play in the middle of defense if needed, but it is not exactly what Flick had in mind this month.
However, the nature of the options available in January, coupled with Barça’s tricky financial situation, means the German manager has accepted that an extra body in defense is better than none. Barça, meanwhile, continue to work on the idea of landing a top center back in the summer — barring any dramatic twists in January.
Meanwhile, Ter Stegen’s future remains up in the air. Flick has made it clear that Joan García is No. 1 at Barça, but there is no clear getaway for the Germany international at the moment. Girona are one team who have shown concrete interest, but a deal remains difficult.
One source suggested to ESPN that Barça may not be willing to let a player leave while still paying the majority of his salary. Another confirmed Girona’s desire to sign the Germany goalkeeper, who wants game time before the World Cup this summer, but also admitted that financially any deal will be “complicated.” That said, stances can quickly change as February nears, so it remains one to watch. — Sam Marsden

– Don’t expect Raheem Sterling to return to the fold for Chelsea now that Enzo Maresca has been replaced as coach by Liam Rosenior. The former Liverpool and Manchester City winger has not played for Chelsea since the 2023-24 season and has been forced to train away from the first team since returning from a season-long loan at Arsenal in 2024-25. But while there has been a change of coach at Stamford Bridge, sources told ESPN that his situation at Chelsea is an ownership decision rather than one made by the coach. — Ogden
– Atlético Madrid are open to letting 24-year-old winger Thiago Almada leave if the club receives a suitable offer, according to sources. The Rojiblancos paid Botafogo around €20 million last summer to secure his services, with the intention of him becoming one of the new stars of Diego Simeone’s team. However, the Argentina international has only started five games since, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Atléti are in no rush because he is young, but Almada needs playing time to prove to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni that he can play an important role at the World Cup, and he might want to move. — Rodri Faez
– Atlético are close to a deal that would see Giacomo Raspadori move to Roma on loan once the Supercopa de España is over. Atléti’s intention is to recoup the €25 million they paid to sign the Italy striker from Napoli in the summer, although they are looking at an initial loan with a mandatory permanent option. — Faez
– Manchester United winger Sam Mather, 21, is close to a permanent move to Turkish club Kayserispor, after failing to break into the first team. — Dawson

– Vancouver Whitecaps defender Tristan Blackmon looks to be staying put, after a report from the Miami Herald emerged that Inter Miami were close to acquiring the U.S. international. Whitecaps GM Axel Schuster went so far as to issue a statement saying that rather than departing, “the opposite was true” in terms of Blackmon’s future. One source with knowledge of the player’s thinking added that Blackmon would remain in Vancouver, and that he and the Whitecaps are working towards signing the player to a new contract. — Jeff Carlisle

– Free agent Gabriel Paulista is set to join Corinthians after agreeing a contract with the club. The 35-year-old defender will be fulfilling a childhood dream, as he is a supporter of the club, and he let go of 30 million Brazilian reais ($5.6 million) in wages owed from his time at Besiktas to join them. The former Arsenal center back was also the subject of interest from other Brazilian teams, but ultimately chose to join his boyhood club. — Hernan and Felipe Silva, ESPN Brasil
– Sergio Ramos, 39, and James Rodríguez, 34, have left Liga MX sides Monterrey and León, respectively, but there is a possibility that both players could continue to play in Mexico or MLS, as several teams have inquired about them. Rodríguez has been linked with at least five teams from MLS, with LA Galaxy and the Columbus Crew being the strongest contenders. Ramos recently turned down a move to Paris FC and is reportedly keen to return to Europe. — ESPN Deportes
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed interest in hosting Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that the Liton Das-led side would not travel to India due to security concerns.
According to PCB sources, Pakistan’s “ready and fully equipped” venues could be offered as an alternative if Sri Lankan venues are unavailable.
The sources added that Pakistan has successfully hosted major international events in recent years, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the ICC Women’s Qualifiers 2025.
The PCB is showing interest amid strained relations between the BCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following the removal of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
The decision coincided with worsening diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India, although no official reason was provided by the IPL or the BCCI for Rahman’s exclusion.
According to PCB sources, Pakistan could easily accommodate Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2025 fixtures, adding that all designated venues in the country are prepared to host matches.
Under the current schedule, Bangladesh are set to play their first three group-stage matches in Kolkata, with their final group match slated for Mumbai. However, the venues became contentious after Rahman’s removal from the KKR squad.
Following the development, the Bangladesh government banned the broadcast of the IPL in the country, while the BCB formally informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) of its decision not to play T20 World Cup matches in India.
The ICC is expected to take the final decision on whether Bangladesh’s matches will be shifted to an alternative host nation.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Former Michigan State and NBA player Paul Davis apologized for verbally abusing an official at the Breslin Center and being removed from his seat during the 12th-ranked Spartans’ 80-51 victory over USC on Monday.
Davis addressed his actions with reporters and expressed remorse Tuesday, less than 24 hours after an official pointed him out and asked for him to be escorted from his seat near the court.
“I’m up here to take accountability — to own it,” he told reporters before coach Tom Izzo’s news conference.
Davis said he apologized to official Jeffrey Anderson during a call Tuesday.
“Short conversation, but an amazing conversation,” Davis said. “Amazing guy.”
Davis said he was sorry for being a distraction for Michigan State’s players during their strong start this season and for taking away from USC’s experience. Davis also apologized to Michigan State fans at the game and watching on television, the university, along with parents and kids for not being a role model.
Davis called Izzo several hours after the game and wanted to publicly address his mistake.
“It kind of went global,” said Izzo, who coached Davis when he played for the Spartans 20 years ago.
With six-plus minutes left and the Spartans leading the Trojans 67-46, television cameras showed Izzo shouting across the court at Davis after the officials stopped the game.
“What are you doing?” Izzo screamed.
Izzo said after the game that Davis was one of his favorite guys.
“He’s always calling and doing things, but what he said, he should never say in the world,” Izzo said. “That ticked me off.”
The 41-year-old Davis played for Michigan State from 2002 to 2006 and was a three-year starter. He had career averages of 13.2 points and 7 rebounds, including 17.5 points and 9.1 rebounds his senior season.
“You’re a basketball player when you’re here, and you’re an ambassador when you leave,” Davis said.
Davis played in the NBA with the LA Clippers from 2006 to 2009 and the Washington Wizards in 2009-10.
