Australian tennis ‘true legend’ Anderson dies aged 91
SYDNEY: Mal Anderson, the first unseeded player to win the US Open men’s singles title, has died aged 91, Tennis Australia said on Monday.
Anderson’s career started on a dirt court on a farm and he went on to become an Australian tennis great, winning the US crown in 1957 and three major doubles titles.
Although unseeded at what was then the United States Championships, Anderson beat three seeds and dropped only two sets on his way to the title.
He also won the Davis Cup twice.
After retirement Anderson mentored young Australian players including Pat Rafter, who went on to become world number one.
“I was really sad to hear of Mal’s passing. He was one of those people who helped shape my tennis from very early on,” said Rafter, who twice won the US Open.

“He was a true legend of the game, but more importantly he was a terrific bloke — humble, generous with his time and always happy to help younger players along.
“Tennis in Australia has lost one of its greats, and a lot of us have lost a mate and mentor. I feel very lucky to have known him.”

The “Samoan Werewolf” took his frustrations out on Reigns, Raw general manager Adam Pearce and some of the producers who came out to stop his post-match assault. The attack included Fatu going after the referee, putting the Tongan death grip on Reigns and super-kicking anyone who got in his way.
Reigns got the last word in as he walked up the entrance ramp following the vicious assault.
“This is why we shoulda never let Jacob in this company,” Reigns told Cathy Kelley as he walked to the back. “You don’t belong here, Jacob. There is no order with you. This is your last night here.”

Reigns and Fatu battled throughout the night with a lot of the “Tribal Chief’s” damage seemingly being ineffective throughout the match. But one key mistake ultimately cost Fatu.
Fatu had Reigns in the Tongan death grip toward the end of the match. Reigns clung onto the referee and exposed a turnbuckle in the process. Reigns was able to thrust Fatu into the exposed turnbuckle and hit a spear.
Reigns pinned Fatu for the win, but it sparked the chaotic scene.

Fatu was last seen holding the World Heavyweight Championship over Reigns, who was sprawled out on the mat. The first battle may have ended between the two, but the war is far from finished.

Pakistan Women completed a 3-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe Women with a nine-wicket victory in the third and final ODI at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Saturday.
It was only the third occasion that Pakistan Women completed a 3-0 sweep in a bilateral ODI series after previously achieving the feat against Sri Lanka in 2017-18 and Ireland in 2022-23.
Chasing 223 for victory, Sadaf Shamas scored 90 off 98 balls with 13 fours, while Gull Feroza remained unbeaten on 106 off 92 deliveries, hitting 16 fours.
The pair stitched together a 220-run opening partnership as Pakistan cruised to victory by nine wickets.

Pakistan had also dominated the first two ODIs, winning the opening match by 168 runs and the second by 206 runs — their biggest-ever margin of victory in women’s ODIs.
The series featured several notable performances and records, helping Pakistan climb to second place on the ICC Women’s Championship 2025-29 points table behind New Zealand.
During the series, Feroza and Sadaf accumulated 571 runs together in three matches, the highest by an opening pair in a bilateral ODI series.
Pakistan will next face Zimbabwe in a T20I series beginning on May 12, with the home side aiming to carry its winning momentum into the shorter-format series and the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Mehidy’s five-for gives Bangladesh slim lead | The Express Tribune
Debutant Azan Awais marked his arrival in international cricket with a memorable century, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a superb five-wicket haul to keep narrowly ahead of on an absorbing third day of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Bangladesh closed the day on 7-0 in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 34 runs after bowling Pakistan out for 386 in reply to their first-innings total of 413.
Only 11 deliveries were possible after the innings break before fading light forced umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena to call an early end to play.
The day, however, belonged as much to Pakistan’s young debutant Azan as it did to Bangladesh spinner Mehidy, with momentum swinging repeatedly in a gripping contest in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 clash.
Resuming on 179-1 overnight, Pakistan looked well placed thanks to the unbroken partnership between Azan and fellow debutant Abdullah Fazal.
The pair continued confidently in the morning session, frustrating Bangladesh’s bowlers with disciplined shot selection and calm temperament on a surface beginning to offer more assistance to spin.
Azan brought up a remarkable century on Test debut, becoming one of the few Pakistan batters to achieve the feat in Bangladesh. The left-handed opener displayed maturity well beyond his age during a composed innings of 103 from 165 deliveries, striking 14 boundaries.
His century partnership with Abdullah Fazal helped Pakistan move into a strong position before fast bowler Taskin Ahmed eventually broke through shortly after the milestone.
Azan’s dismissal triggered a dramatic middle-order collapse as Bangladesh clawed their way back into the match. Pakistan lost three wickets at regular intervals, including the key wicket of Abdullah Fazal, who battled hard for a valuable 60 before falling to Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
At 230-5, Pakistan were suddenly under pressure again, but vice-captain Salman Ali Agha and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan steadied the innings with a crucial counter-attacking stand.
The pair added 119 runs for the sixth wicket in what proved to be Pakistan’s most important partnership of the innings after the opening stand.
Rizwan mixed caution with aggression during his fluent 59 off 79 balls, hitting eight fours before left-arm spinner Taijul Islam dismissed him late in the second session to hand Bangladesh another breakthrough before tea.
Agha continued to resist with a determined 58 from 94 deliveries, including six boundaries and a six, but Pakistan’s hopes of taking a first-innings lead faded quickly once he was dismissed by express pacer Nahid Rana early in the final session.
Pakistan’s lower order managed only limited resistance as Bangladesh wrapped up the innings for 386, securing a slender but potentially crucial 27-run lead.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the standout performer for Bangladesh with figures of 5-102 from 38 overs, while Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam claimed two wickets each. Nahid Rana also chipped in with one wicket.
With all 10 second-innings wickets intact and a narrow lead already established, Bangladesh will look to tighten their grip on the first Test against Pakistan heading into day four in Dhaka.
