India’s chief economic adviser says Trump’s tariffs could shave 0.5% off GDP: report

US President Donald Trump embraces with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the “Namaste Trump” event at Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium, in Ahmedabad, India, February 24, 2020.
  • US last month doubled tariffs on imports from India to 50%.
  • Indian FM says country will continue to buy Russian oil.
  • US-India two-way goods trade totalled $129 billion in 2024.

US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on India could reduce the country’s gross domestic product by half a per cent this year, the nation’s Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran said in a Bloomberg TV interview on Monday.

“Depending upon how long it lasts even in this financial year, it may translate into a GDP impact of somewhere between 0.5% to 0.6%,” he told the broadcaster.

Trump, who is seeking to broker an end to the Ukraine conflict, has said India’s oil imports are helping fund Moscow’s war effort and last month doubled tariffs on imports from India to 50%.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said last week the world’s third-biggest oil importer and consumer will continue to buy Russian oil as it proves economical.

US-India two-way goods trade totalled $129 billion in 2024, with a $45.8 billion US trade deficit, according to US Census Bureau data.

Exporter groups estimate the tariffs could affect nearly 55% of India’s $87 billion in merchandise exports to the US, while benefiting competitors such as Vietnam, Bangladesh and China.

Nageswaran said he would stick to the government’s 6.3-6.8% growth forecast for the current fiscal year ending in March 2026, citing the April-June quarter’s 7.8% expansion, the fastest in over a year.

Dolly Parton is desperately attempting to sound upbeat.

However, insiders revealed the country legend is struggling deeply after her husband Carl Dean’s death.

According to RadarOnline.com, following Dean’s passing in March this year, Parton has been throwing herself into work, which is beginning to take a toll on her health.

“Dolly simply will not stop, and she’s hardly taken a breath since Carl passed away,” confided an insider.

“Only a few days after he died, she made an appearance at Dollywood to celebrate the park’s 40th anniversary, and she’s been going like that ever since.”

The source went on to share that Parton’s nonstop work ethic may be her way of coping.

“She hasn’t broken a single commitment — at least not until she got sick,” they added.

Her friends are reportedly worried that the 79-year-old singer’s grief is catching up to her.

“She’s trying to stay strong, but everyone can see she’s exhausted. Working nonstop isn’t healing her pain — it’s masking it,” the insider explained before moving to a new topic.

‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ director speaks out

Steven Soderbergh reflects on ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’

Now, it is revealed a Star Wars movie titled The Hunt for Ben Solo was pitched to the Disney execs, but it did not get the green light.

Steven Soderbergh, who serves as a director on the never-made movie, now writes about the project on the social media platform BlueSky.

“For the record, I did not enjoy lying about the existence of ‘THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO’, but it really did need to remain a secret…until now!” he pens.

The filmmaker continues, “Also, in the aftermath of the ‘HFBS’ situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in a finished movie script for greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. She said no, this was a first.”

He also, in a previous interview with AP, said, “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.”

Steven’s post comes after Adam Driver, who was set to star in the movie, earlier revealed the existence of such a project.

“We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that,” he told the news agency, adding that “the sequel idea was really cool. It is no more, so I can finally talk about it.”

Andrew failed to inform Eugenie, Beatrice before Buckingham Palace issued his statement

Andrew failed to inform Eugenie, Beatrice before Buckingham Palace issued his statement

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were left “completely blindsided” by their father Prince Andrew’s sudden decision to relinquish his royal titles, according to royal insiders cited by GB News.

Andrew  reportedly failed to inform his daughters before agreeing to a statement on October 17 that confirmed he would surrender royal titles.

Sources said Andrew was “bounced into agreeing” the move, leaving his family unprepared for the public fallout.

A tense family meeting followed days later at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where Princess Beatrice met with her parents.

The gathering was described as emotional, with Sarah Ferguson said to have suffered a “meltdown” upon realizing she would lose her Duchess title.

Princess Eugenie did not attend. Witnesses later described Princess Beatrice as “devastated” and visibly shaken after leaving the meeting.

The episode has deepened fractures within the York family, once known for their close bond.

Both sisters have since retreated from public appearances, seeking comfort with their husbands and young children as they come to terms with their father’s dramatic decision, GB News reported.
