Spinners keep India in command | The Express Tribune
India’s spinners struck regular blows to dent West Indies’ reply as the hosts extended their dominance in the second Test after a fluent century from skipper Shubman Gill on Saturday.
The tourists were 140-4 at stumps, still trailing India by 378 runs at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Shai Hope, on 31, and wicketkeeper-batsman Tevin Imlach, on 14, were batting at close of play after left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets.
Gill led from the front with his unbeaten 129 — his fifth hundred of the year in eight Tests — after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s departure on 175 in the second over of the second day.
In reply to India’s mammoth first-innings 518-5 declared, opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (34) and Alick Athanaze (41) offered some resistance before departing.
Chanderpaul edged a short-of-a-length ball from Jadeja to slip where KL Rahul caught it after a couple of juggles to end a 66-run second-wicket stand.
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav sent back Athanaze and in the next over skipper Roston Chase was dismissed for a duck off Jadeja.
Hope kept up the fight after he survived a close lbw appeal, which India reviewed but lost as ball tracking confirmed the umpire’s call.
In the second session, West Indies opener John Campbell fell for 10 after Sai Sudharsan somehow took a stunning and slightly lucky reflex catch at forward short-leg.
The left-handed Campbell attempted a slog sweep off Jadeja and Sudharsan instinctively held on to the ball with his helmet, chest and hands as he ducked for cover.
Gill, who started the day on 20, took on the West Indies attack with his classy strokeplay, hitting 16 fours and two sixes in his 10th Test century.
Gill scored three runs off left-arm spinner Khary Pierre to reach a hundred and raised his bat to acknowledge a raucous weekend crowd.
He and wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel, who made 44, shared 102 runs for the fifth wicket and put on quick runs peppered with regular boundaries after the lunch break to turn the screw on the West Indies.
Earlier, the left-handed Jaiswal added just two to his overnight score when a mix-up with Gill saw him heading back to the pavilion.
Attempting a single after pushing the ball to mid-off, Jaiswal set off, but Gill had his back towards the striker and was ball-watching, and Imlach was quick to rattle the stumps.
Gill kept calm and put on 91 runs with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made 43 before Jomel Warrican got him out for his third wicket.
India are hot favourites to sweep the two-match series after winning the opener by an innings.

Four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson had a message for her beau after capping her latest standout season with another championship.
Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Phoenix Mercury in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals on Friday to secure the franchise’s third championship in the past four years. Wilson was named the Finals MVP for the second time in her career. She also earned WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors for a third time. Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo, who is in a relationship with Wilson, was on hand for Friday’s clincher.

Videos shared across social media showed Wilson and Adebayo embracing and celebrating the special moment. One video showed a tearful Wilson telling Adebayo, “Thank you for believing in me, baby.”
In another video, the Miami center shared some of his thoughts on Wilson. “Super proud of her,” Adebayo said.
“Y’all don’t see the behind-the-scenes, the ups and the downs. So being able to obviously have this moment with her and share this moment… truly special, truly proud of her. Like I tell everybody, be thankful for it while it’s here.”

Wilson also became the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a single season.

OSLO, Norway — Manchester City star Erling Haaland twice missed a penalty for Norway against Israel but still wound up with a hat trick in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win on Saturday.
Haaland’s first penalty was hit low and saved by Daniel Peretz. But Polish referee Szymon Marciniak ordered the kick to be retaken because the goalkeeper had moved off his line too soon.
He tried the other way the second time, aiming for the corner, but Peretz guessed correctly again and palmed his effort away as Haaland looked on disbelievingly.
Haaland made up for it later in the first half when he scored with a low strike after latching onto Alexander Sørloth‘s pass, his 10th goal in the qualifying campaign.
The Norway star went on to score two more goals to take his tally to 12, the most in UEFA qualifying matches by far. He also has 12 goals in nine matches for City this season, taking his club tally to 136 in 155 games for the club.
The hat trick for Haaland took his total for Norway to 51 in his career to extend his lead as the country’s all-time leader in goals. He reached the 50-goal mark in just 46 games, whereas it took Harry Kane 71 matches with England, Brazil‘s Neymar 74 and Kylian Mbappé 90 games with France to hit the half-century milestone.
Record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi took 107 games to hit 50 for Argentina, and Cristiano Ronaldo needed 114 games with Portugal.
The win keeps Norway perfect in qualifying with six wins from six games. They lead Italy by nine points in Group I, but the Italians can still theoretically catch them for top spot and an automatic bid to the World Cup next summer.
Norway have not played in a World Cup since 1998.
There were peaceful pro-Palestinian protests before the match in Oslo. A police line formed close to the stadium but at a measured distance from the protesters, some of whom chanted “Shut down the embassy,” while others carried red cards and one woman held up a small sign saying “Game Over Israel.”
A few dozen fans stayed to continue protesting outside the stadium once the match started.
The venue was almost full, with 22,000 to 23,000 spectators inside. Capacity was reduced by 3,000, as seats were made unavailable near Israeli fans and in the front row due to security measures.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall have been ruled out for the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Purdy is out with a toe injury, while Pearsall is sidelined with a knee injury.
Backup quarterback Mac Jones, who is listed on the injury report as questionable, is expected to start for the 49ers. Jones hurt his oblique on his final play of last week’s overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams and was limited all week in practice, but should be ready to play, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy, 25, initially hurt his toe in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. He missed the next two games and returned to play in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but reaggravated the injury and missed last week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265 million extension in the offseason, will miss his sixth game due to an injury in San Francisco’s last 13 contests dating to last season.
While the 49ers certainly miss Purdy, they have not missed a beat with Jones, as they are 3-0 in his starts.

The 27-year-old has completed 66.7% of his passes for 905 yards with six touchdowns and one interception in three games.
Jones is one of only two quarterbacks — along with Matthew Stafford in 2021 with the Rams — ever to win his first three starts with a franchise while throwing for at least 900 yards and six touchdowns.

However, for the second straight week, Jones will not have Pearsall to throw to. Jauan Jennings, another one of Jones’ top targets, is listed as questionable with injuries to his ankle and ribs that kept him out of last week’s game.
The 49ers (4-1) play the Buccaneers (4-1) at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
