BUFFALO, N.Y. — Khalil Shakir had his signature big, bright smile on his face as he opened the van door. Inside the vehicle, 19 dogs were waiting as Shakir arrived to save them from being euthanized.

On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills wide receiver helped local rescue, Nickel City Canine Rescue, with a transfer of dogs from Clarke County Animal Shelter — who has to euthanize dogs when space is needed.

The fosters who work with Nickel City Canine Rescue selected 19 dogs that they were able to save. It is the same shelter that the Shakirs’ dog, Missy, was rescued from by Nickel City, and then adopted by the family last year.

This was not the first time that Shakir and his wife, Sayler, assisted with a transport, including helping save 26 dogs in May. They have also been active in helping with dog rescues and animal welfare, especially in the western New York community.

The video of the transport that went viral came just a day after the Shakir Family Foundation held a large pet adoption event Saturday. Eight local rescues took part in the event, with a variety of Bills players attending in support, along with many members from the community. Eighteen dogs from Nickel City were adopted at the event.

It was mentioned to Shakir at the event that the transport of dogs was coming in the next day.

“[Shakir’s] eyes lit up! He said he would love to come help again,” a representative for Nickel City Canine Rescue said in an email.

The fourth-year wide receiver was also accompanied to help with the transport by his mother, Mona, and two best friends.

Manchester City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Italy international has moved to the Etihad Stadium in a deal worth €30 million ($40.2m). He’s signed a five-year contract to replace Ederson in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Ederson’s eight-year stay at City is at an end after the Brazilian joined Fenerbahce for €14m.

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,” said Donnarumma.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola.

“This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege.”

Donnarumma, a Champions League winner with PSG last season, will fight it out with James Trafford to be Guardiola’s No.1.

Trafford, who rejoined the club from Burnley in a £27m deal earlier in the summer, has started City’s first three Premier League games of the season.

Ederson left the Etihad on Tuesday after a glittering stint in Manchester during which he won 15 major trophies including six Premier League titles.

He was also named in the PFA Premier League team of the year twice and won the Premier League golden glove award three times in a row between 2020 and 2022.

“I leave Manchester City incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and I am honoured to have worn the shirt so many times,” said Ederson.

“Under Pep, we have won and dominated the Premier League and conquered Europe. It has been amazing.

“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.

“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this special club.”

Ederson wasn’t the only exit from the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Defender Manuel Akanji completed his move to Inter Milan.

“I cannot wait to meet the Inter fans at San Siro, in the first home game that we’ll have: I am waiting for that moment,” Akanji told Inter’s website.

Sergio Ramos said he expects to win a Grammy Award before lifting the Champions League as a coach.

The Real Madrid and Spain great released his debut single on Sunday called Cibeles, named after the statue where Madrid celebrate their trophies.

Defender Ramos, 39, now captains Liga MX club Monterrey — starting in last weekend’s 4-2 win at Puebla — but still found time to record his first song.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish TV’s El Hormiguero on Monday, Ramos confirmed that the song’s lyrics deal with his departure from Madrid in 2021 — and said he’s confident of winning a Grammy, one of music’s top prizes, before lifting the Champions League as a manager.

“I’m an optimist,” Ramos said. “I always tell people to dream… I see myself with both, winning a Champions League as a coach, but I see myself winning a Grammy in the next few years, before [that].”

“I feel like making music at this stage of my life, I want to bring the experiences I’ve had to people. In the next 5-7 years I see myself more involved in music, because music allows you to compose, and to be at home … You can make music, do your job and also dedicate time to your family.”

Ramos captained Madrid, winning 22 trophies and featuring in some iconic moments — such as his 93rd-minute UCL final goal against Atlético Madrid in 2014 — before leaving in 2021, when the club withdrew its offer of a new contract.

The former Spain international then joined Paris Saint-Germain, before spending a season at boyhood club Sevilla, and then moving to Monterrey earlier this year.

“There are things I never told you, that still hurt me,” the lyrics to Cibeles read. “I never wanted to leave… I hope things go well for you, although I feel bad without you. It’s a good thing I left, because you didn’t treat me the same.”

“You forgot about me, you left me to one side,” the lyrics continue. “Without being able to decide, that’s what hurts me most.”

“It’s a love song. What relationship doesn’t involve pain and suffering?” Ramos said on Monday. “When I went to Paris I wrote 60% of the song, because I felt that way. It hurts. Nobody likes leaving the biggest club in the world.

“Songs are about moments. It’s coming out four years after I started composing it. But there’s no relationship without pain and suffering, and that’s reflected there. It’s a love song, everything has a beginning and an end … When you leave Madrid it hurts. You become part of the past.”

The single’s video features Ramos standing in a deserted Cibeles — usually a busy roundabout in the centre of Madrid — before he is confronted by a white horse.

Later in the clip, the statue begins to crumble and collapse, along with the nearby Madrid town hall.

Ramos — who has home studios at his houses in Seville and Madrid — said his new direction is the culmination of a lifelong interest in music.

“It’s a way of life. At any meeting, a birthday, at Christmas, we all end up singing, with a guitar,” he said. “It’s been a part of my whole life, but football has never allowed me to dedicate the time to it that music demands.

“At this time in life I’d like to combine it with football, to make that transition in the short term, and make good music with the best people and trying to convey to people a part of me, feelings and experiences I’ve had.”
