Judge orders ex-NFL player Darron Lee held without bond as prosecutors weigh death penalty
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee will remain behind bars as he faces a first-degree murder charge in Tennessee.
Lee was taken into custody last week. In addition to the murder charge in the death of his girlfriend, Lee faces a charge of tampering with or fabricating evidence.
On Wednesday, a Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge ruled that Lee, who spent the first three years of his professional football career with the New York Jets, would stay jailed without bond.
Lee is not scheduled to return to court until next month, but prosecutors on Wednesday signaled the case could qualify for the death penalty.

While Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp made it clear there is no final decision concerning the pursuit of the death penalty, he did cite factors that could result in the case becoming eligible for capital punishment.
“Mr. Lee was in a home with a female (who) was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death,” Wamp said in court, arguing for the judge to withhold bond. “And the explanation that he gave doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.
“You walked in the door, there were boxes,” Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Det. Brian Lockhart said, according to NewsChannel9.
“A lot of stuff in the living room. The deceased was in the floor lying on her back. There was blood going up the staircase. On the hand railing there was blood. On the walls, there was blood. On the floor in the living room there was blood. On the floor in the hallway and the stairs.”

The victim in the case had been living in a rental home with Lee. The house is also believed to have been the site where Lee is alleged to have carried out the crime over an estimated 10-day period, Lockhart testified Wednesday.
The detective said he was present during the autopsy and learned the potential cause of death was blunt force trauma homicide. An autopsy report has not yet been released.
According to an arrest affidavit, first responders on Feb. 5 went to a home in the Chattanooga suburb of Ooltewah for a call of CPR in progress, where they found the woman already dead.
Lee told deputies the woman might have fallen in the shower, but, according to an arrest affidavit, there were extensive amounts of blood in different areas of the house that were inconsistent with Lee’s statement.

Authorities carrying out a search warrant found multiple types of trauma to the woman’s body, including a stab wound to her abdomen, an apparent human bite mark on her shoulder, a large bruise on her head, black eyes with heavy swelling and dried blood on her face and neck, according to the affidavit.
Investigators also found alcohol, narcotics and a gun, the affidavit said.
The affidavit said Lee had a facial injury, lacerations on his hands, wounds on his chest and blood inside the case of his cellphone.
Detectives also identified blood that someone attempted to clean up in multiple areas of the house, in addition to cleaning supplies near where testing confirmed there had been blood stains but no blood was visible, the affidavit said.
Wamp said Lee was on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one county and battery in another and on probation in Ohio for attempted battery.

Mike Little, a deputy public defender representing Lee, told The Associated Press it was premature for him to make any statements.
The Jets selected Lee in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He later played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, last appearing in an NFL game in 2020.

UK PM Starmer demands apology from ‘offensive’ Ratcliffe
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer branded comments made by Jim Ratcliffe that the country has been “colonized” by immigrants as “offensive and wrong,” and insisted the Manchester United co-owner should apologize.
Ratcliffe drew a flurry of criticism Wednesday after an interview with Sky News in which the 73-year-old complained at the impact of “huge levels of immigrants” entering the country.
The remarks prompted a rebuke from Starmer, and sparked outrage from a number of United supporter groups.
The Prime Minister posted on X: “Offensive and wrong. Britain is a proud, tolerant and diverse country. Jim Ratcliffe should apologise.”
Earlier in the day, Ratcliffe told Sky News: “You can’t have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in.
“I mean, the UK has been colonized. It’s costing too much money. … The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it?”
The interview was swiftly condemned by the Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club (MUMSC) for including “language frequently used in far-right narratives.”
A statement issued by MUMSC read: “Manchester United is a global club built on diversity — on players, staff and supporters from every background, faith and ethnicity.
“The strength of our club, and of our country, lies in that diversity. …
“We stand with all communities who reject racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and hatred in all its forms, and we call for leadership that unites rather than divides.”
The Manchester United Supporters Trust said: “Comments from the club’s senior leadership should make inclusion easier, not harder.”
Anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out said in a statement there was “no place” for Ratcliffe’s views in English football.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments are disgraceful and deeply divisive at a time when football does so much to bring communities together,” it read.
” … This type of language and leadership has no place in English football, and we believe most fans will feel the same.”

1 dead in crash involving Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team
TWIN LAKES, Iowa — A community college bus carrying the school’s baseball team crashed and overturned in a ditch in rural Iowa on Wednesday, authorities said, killing one person and injuring all the other 32 occupants.
The morning crash involved the Iowa Lakes Community College bus and no other vehicles, the Iowa State Patrol said in a statement. It occurred on a highway near Twin Lakes, about 110 miles northwest of Des Moines.
Three people were airlifted to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, said Bruce Musgrave, director of Calhoun County emergency services. Others were taken by ambulance to four hospitals in the area.
The Iowa Lakes baseball team (1-3) was scheduled to play games at North Arkansas College starting Thursday, but all four have been canceled. The school is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, which said it was “heartbroken to learn of the bus accident.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student-athletes, coaches, staff, families, and the entire Iowa Lakes community during this incredibly difficult time,” the conference said in a statement.
It wasn’t clear why the bus crashed. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating.

Chock, Bates take ‘bittersweet’ silver in Olympic ice dance
MILAN — While France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron and Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Porrier remained on the ice to show off their new Olympic medals Wednesday night, American ice dancing stars Madison Chock and Evan Bates quietly skated off with their silver medals draped around their necks.
Edged out for gold by the French duo, Bates found his way to the exit while Chock was flanked by a number of her medal-less peers rinkside, who leaned over the rink’s barrier and embraced her in a group hug as she appeared to cry.
The American pair had come to Italy in search of their first individual gold medal, and as the three-time reigning world champions, they were the heavy favorites to stand atop the podium. Having led the American team to its second straight Olympic gold medal over the weekend with two impressive programs, Chock and Bates had only the individual gold left to accomplish in a legendary career that had spanned four Olympic Games together.
They had been surprised by a second-place finish in the rhythm dance portion of the competition Monday night but had told reporters they remained “locked in” and wouldn’t be dismayed by the result or let it change their mentality or preparation.
Competing second-to-last Wednesday, Chock, 33, and Bates, 36, mesmerized the crowd with their matador-themed program set to a flamenco version of “Paint It Black” — she as the matador and he as the bull — and perfectly synchronized choreography and dynamic elements. They took over the lead with a season-best score of 134.67 points, giving them an total of 224.39, and they sat in the chairs designated for the leaders and anxiously watched, holding hands, as Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron took the ice and performed their program, set to music from “The Whale.”
When Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron’s score was announced — 135.64 points for a total of 225.82 — Chock and Bates’ longtime dream was over in an instant.
“It’s definitely a little bittersweet because we are so, so happy with how we performed this week,” Chock told reporters through tears in the mixed zone. “We really gave it our all, and I wouldn’t change anything about how we approached each performance, what we delivered in each performance. We really gave it our best.
“And that’s what we set out to do coming to these Games. So I think we’ve got a lot to be proud of and a lot to be grateful for because we’ve had an incredible career and we’ve been so well supported by our families and our coaches by each other. And sometimes that’s just how it shakes out. This is history for us and I wouldn’t change anything.”
As surprising as the result was for Chock and Bates after their dominant cycle ahead of the Games, it was made perhaps even more stunning because this marked the first season of in the partnership of Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron. Not to mention, it has been a pairing marred in controversy since it was first announced last year. Fournier Beaudry previously represented Canada with Nikolaj Sorensen, who is also her romantic partner, before he was suspended from the sport for six years following allegations of sexual assault. She has publicly voiced her support for him. The suspension was overturned in June on jurisdictional grounds, but the case remains pending.
Cizeron won gold at the 2022 Olympic Games with his partner Gabriella Papadakis. She has since retired and released a book earlier this year accusing him of being “controlling” and “demanding.” Cizeron has called Papadakis’ book and her allegations a “smear campaign” and has denied such claims. After winning the gold Wednesday, Cizeron said dealing with everything off the ice had been “quite a challenge,” but he was proud of how they overcame it.
“I think from the beginning we tried to create a bubble where we really supported each other through everything,” Cizeron said. “We’ve been through some incredibly hard moments, but I think the love that we have for each other and for the sport really brought us through, and it kind of helped us keep our heads on our shoulders and we tried to really focus on enjoying those moments together because they don’t last forever and we didn’t want that to be taken away from us.”
Fournier Beaudry received her French citizenship in November. The pair won the European Championships as well as two Grand Prix titles but came in second place to Chock and Bates in their only previous head-to-head at the Grand Prix finals in December.
Gilles and Porrier, the two-time reigning world runners-up, earned the bronze medal to mark their first time on the Olympic podium in three appearances. As the pair had expressed their dissatisfaction with scoring throughout the season, Gilles said they didn’t arrive in Milan with a certain result in mind.
“I think for Paul and I, our main focus for this Olympic Games was to create a moment for ourselves and to not focus on anything else,” Gilles said. “And I think we truly created the moment that we wanted to and really let the judging be the judging and that’s all we can do, but I’m really proud of what we did and how we represented ourselves.”
The Canadian pair had also indicated this might be their final competitive season but said they weren’t sure Wednesday night.
Making their Olympic debut, Emilea Zingas, 23, and Vadym Kolesnik, 24, finished in a surprising fifth place and cemented their spot as the American pair to watch going forward.
Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, the third American team competing, finished 11th.
As for Chock and Bates, when asked if they would consider making another Olympic run after coming so close to the gold, Bates was quick in his response.
“Not at the moment,” he said.
In the news conference soon after, he added he wasn’t sure if this would be their final season.
“We certainly put all of our efforts to team event and individual event,” Bates said. “And so I think the aftermath of that is so immediate right now it’s really hard to say what the career plans will be.”
