Celia Rose Gooding embraces “Star Trek” icon Uhura: “It’s just fun to play a recognizable, playful version of this character”

Actor Celia Rose Gooding has stepped into the center of one of science fiction’s most passionate fandoms, portraying the iconic character Nyota Uhura in Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”

“Trekkies are some of the most devoted fans I think in fandom history,” Gooding said. “To be embraced with open arms, reprising an iconic character, they’ve been so generous and so kind to me and so receptive on my take of her.”

The series, the 11th in the Star Trek franchise, takes place a decade before the original show. Gooding plays a young Uhura, a Starfleet cadet specializing in linguistics. Though she comes from a family of Trekkies herself, she admitted she was not very familiar with the franchise before landing the role.

“When they found out that I’d booked the role, I think everyone was ten times more excited than I was,” Gooding said.

She describes her mom as the biggest Trek fan she knows and said she leaned in her mother’s early guidance, from perfecting the Vulcan salute to embracing the show’s spirit.

Celia Rose Gooding says her mother, a lifelong “Star Trek” fan, taught her the Vulcan salute and reminded her to approach Uhura with curiosity and hope.

“‘Trek’ is all about curiosity and hope and community,” Gooding said.

Gooding explained that she intentionally avoided learning too much about Uhura’s future storylines, since the prequel format means her character doesn’t know what’s ahead.

“She doesn’t know her future, so it’s probably best not to be too, too informed,” Gooding said. “So I’m not playing as if I know what’s going to happen to me, because no one knows what tomorrow brings.”

This week’s episode marks a turning point for Uhura, as she faces scrutiny as she navigates her dual identity as both a young woman in her early twenties and a Starfleet officer entrusted with a lot of responsibility.

“When that responsibility is interrogated, when her contributions to Starfleet are interrogated in a way that she’s not expecting, she has to confront her contributions to the institution that is Starfleet in a way that I don’t think Star Trek has given audiences a lens into before,” Gooding said.

The season also introduces lighter moments, including a budding romance.

“I was really excited for her to have some levity and some joy and some flirtation,” Gooding said. “A little quasi workplace romance can’t hurt anybody in the fictional world. It’s just fun to play a recognizable, playful version of this character.”

Season three of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is now streaming on Paramount+.

Denise Richards faces ultimate rejection from Heather Locklear

Denise Richards’ desperate attempt for peace with Heather Locklear ends in vain

Denise Richards was reportedly snubbed by ex-friend Heather Locklear as she tried to make peace amid explosive divorce drama with husband Aaron Phypers.

For the unversed, the 54-year-old American actress has been trying to make peace with her former friend Heather Locklear while her divorce fight with estranged husband Phypers got worse.

According to Radar Online, Locklear is still upset that Richards “hooked up” with her ex Richie Sambora years ago.

“Denise has been trying to get in touch, but she’s not getting anywhere, because Locklear has a long memory,” a source said.

Notably, after the end of the Wild Things star’s first marriage with Charlie Sheen, she had a “hot-and-heavy romance” with Locklear’s estranged husband, Sambora, a musician, songwriter and singer by profession. It began soon after the Dynasty star filed for divorce in 2206.

“Heather had separated from Richie, and she and Denise were hanging out and hitting up nightclubs to let off some steam, but then Denise backstabbed her by taking up with Richie. Heather felt betrayed,” the insider said.

Richards is now going through a bitter divorce from Phypers after accusing him of “years of abuse,” leaking her most private pictures, and stealing her laptop. He still demands her spousal support because of his unemployment.

However, Locklear “is not trying to get pleasure from Denise’s misery right now, but there is a part of her that says this is a classic case of karma biting Denise in the butt,” per the source.

“In Heather’s view, Denise is reaping what she sows in terms of how she’s treated people. Heather won’t be holding any pity parties for Denise anytime soon,” the source claimed.

Major update on ‘Gremlins 3’ revealed

Chris Columbus shares update on ‘Gremlins 3’

Gremlins is a well-known black horror comedy franchise that has released two installments, but for the third, there is much anticipation among fans about when it will come.

Now, Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the original movie, has shared an update on the threequel, as the last film was released in 1990.

“There’s a bunch of scripts for Gremlins,” he teased in an interview with GamesRadar+. “I mean, nothing has been approved. We’re working on something, but we’re always [working on something]. Gremlins is a never-ending writing assignment.”

Besides the update, Chris also weighed in on his initial stance against the making of sequels.

“Back in the early 80s, when we had finished Gremlins, there was the opportunity to do Gremlins 2, but I was of a mind that once I’ve said it, I’ve said it, there’s no reason to do a sequel,” he recalled.

This mindset, he said, led him to consider making other movies instead of Gremlins 2.

“So Steven and I could have worked on Gremlins 2, but I said, ‘No, I’ve done that. I’m going to move on.’ And I moved on to Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes. So we still worked together,” the director noted.

However, since then, Chris’s views on the sequels definitely evolved as he had made Home Alone two and the first two films in the Harry Potter franchise.

Meanwhile, his latest-directed film, The Thursday Murder Club, is streaming on Netflix.
