Amid the rising concerns over the sexualised AI deepfakes in countries including the UK and US, Elon Musk’s Grok artificial intelligence chatbot will no longer edit “images of real people in revealing clothing” on X, the company confirmed Wednesday evening.

The company’s decision came after facing global outrage over the misuse of Grok, where the AI Chatbot was found to be complying with user requests to digitally undress images of adults and, in some cases, children.

“We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis. This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers,” X wrote via its Safety team account.

Within the last week xAi, which owns both Grok and X, restricted image generation for Grok on X to paying X premium subscribers

CNN reported that it has been observed that in the last few days, Grok’s X account had modified how it responded in general to users’ image generation requests, even for those subscribed to X premium.

California’s top prosecutor has launched an investigation into the spread of sexualised AI deepfakes generated by Elon Musk’s AI model Grok.

Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement announcing the probe: “The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking.”

xAI, which develops Grok, has previously said “anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content”.

California’s inquiry comes as British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warns of possible action against X.

In Wednesday’s statement, Bonta said: “This material, which depicts women and children in nude and sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people across the internet.”

The Democratic prosecutor urged xAI to take immediate action.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, posted to X on Wednesday that xAI’s decision to “create and host a breeding ground for predators… is vile”.

The BBC has contacted xAI for comment.

On Wednesday, Musk posted to X that he is “not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero.”

“Obviously, Grok does not spontaneously generate images,” Musk wrote. “It does so only according to user requests.”

The tech billionaire, a Republican mega-donor, has also said that critics of X were politically motivated and using the Grok controversy as an “excuse for censorship”.

In November, Wired magazine reported that tools from other AI companies like OpenAI and Google have also been used to digitally undress people.

Last week, three US Democratic senators asked Apple and Google to remove X and Grok from their app stores.

Within hours of the request, X restricted its image generation tool so that it would only be available to paying subscribers.

X and Grok remain available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

It comes amid a debate over whether US tech companies are shielded from responsibility for what users post on AI platforms.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 provides legal immunity to online platforms for user-generated content.

But Prof James Grimmelmann of Cornell University argues this law “only protects sites from liability for third-party content from users, not content the sites themselves produce”.

Grimmelmann said xAI was trying to deflect blame for the imagery on to users, but expressed doubt this argument would hold up in court.

“This isn’t a case where users are making the images themselves and then sharing them on X,” he said.

In this case “xAI itself is making the images. That’s outside of what Section 230 applies to”, he added.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon has argued that Section 230, which he co-authored, does not apply to AI-generated images. He said companies should be held fully responsible for such content.

“I’m glad to see states like California step up to investigate Elon Musk’s horrific child sexual abuse material generator,” Wyden told the BBC on Wednesday.

Wyden is one of the three Democratic senators who asked Apple and Google to remove X and Grok from their app stores.

The announcement of the probe in California comes as the UK is preparing legislation that would make it illegal to create non-consensual intimate images.

The UK watchdog Ofcom has also launched an investigation into Grok.

If it determines the platform has broken the law, it can issue fines of up to 10% of its worldwide revenue or £18m, whichever is greater.

On Monday, Sir Keir Starmer told Labour MPs that Musk’s social media platform X could lose the “right to self regulate” adding that “if X cannot control Grok, we will.”

Pakistan’s broad money (M2) supply rose to Rs41.63 trillion, registering a week-on-week increase of Rs346 billion. On a fiscal year-to-date basis, M2 has expanded by Rs838 billion, while the calendar year-to-date growth stands at Rs346 billion.

On an annual basis, the broad money recorded a substantial rise of Rs6.01 trillion, supported by higher deposit mobilisation and balance-sheet expansion within the banking sector, according to data compiled by Optimus Capital Management.

A closer look at the composition of money supply shows that total bank deposits climbed to Rs30.66 trillion, increasing by Rs367 billion during the week and by Rs4.22 trillion compared to the same period of last year.

In contrast, the currency in circulation declined by Rs27 billion on a weekly basis to Rs10.92 trillion, suggesting a partial shift away from cash holdings. Consequently, the currency in circulation as a share of M2 eased to 26.2%, down 0.3 percentage point week-on-week, although it remains 0.6 percentage point higher year on year.

On the asset side, net foreign assets (NFA) of the banking system improved by Rs102 billion during the week under review to Rs880 billion, contributing positively to the overall monetary expansion. Net domestic assets (NDA) rose by Rs243 billion to Rs40.75 trillion, mainly driven by strong private sector credit growth.

Credit to the private sector increased sharply by Rs412 billion during the week, taking total outstanding credit to Rs10.76 trillion. Islamic banking continued to lead incremental credit growth, while conventional banks recorded a moderate expansion.

In contrast, the net federal government borrowing dipped by Rs66 billion on a weekly basis to Rs37.16 trillion, indicating some fiscal restraint or a greater reliance on non-bank sources of financing.

Moreover, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) conducted an auction of Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs – Fixed Rate) on Wednesday. The auction, which offered two-year (zero-coupon), three-year, five-year, 10-year and 15-year tenors, attracted total bids of Rs2.06 trillion. The central bank accepted Rs450 billion through competitive bids, with total acceptance rising to Rs546.3 billion after including non-competitive bids and short selling.

Furthermore, the Pakistani rupee appreciated by three paisa against the US dollar in inter-bank trading and closed at Rs279.97 compared to the previous day’s close at Rs280.

Gold prices recorded a sharp increase in the local market as the price of 24-karat gold per tola surged by Rs4,300 to settle at a record high of Rs486,162. The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold increased by Rs3,687 to Rs416,805, according to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association.
