Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson on the musical alchemy of “Song Sung Blue”
Last week, at a New York bar called Old Mates, Australian icon Hugh Jackman sang a few songs by an American icon, Neil Diamond. He’s been doing a lot of this lately.
His new film, “Song Sung Blue,” is based on the real-life story of Mike and Claire Sardina, celebrity impersonators who teamed up to form a Neil Diamond tribute act by the name of Lightning & Thunder. Jackman was cast early on as Mike, and director Craig Brewer was still looking for someone to play Claire, when Jackman got an idea from watching TV: “Yeah. It’s this little-known show, ‘CBS Sunday Morning,'” he said.
In April 2024, “Sunday Morning” aired a profile of Kate Hudson and her blossoming music career.
Jackman was contacted by a friend and assistant, Michelle: “She texts me: ‘Are you watching “CBS Sunday Morning”?’ I said, ‘I’m not.’ Normally I am, by the way – that sounded sucky, but it’s true! I normally am! And I wasn’t – I turned it on, and there was Kate promoting her debut solo album. I texted Craig Brewer, the writer-director, and I said, ‘Kate Hudson is Claire. Claire is Kate.’ And he said, ‘Oh my God, perfect.'”
“Perfect” might be the right word: Hudson’s turn as Claire Sardina has already earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
Jackman said, “As much as i could see it and feel it, nothing prepared me from day one of rehearsal through to the end, ’til I saw the movie, of Kate’s performance. Because it was like, I could feel – you know, you just know, like, ‘Ah, she’s gonna be perfect,’ ’cause she’s amazing, and I love her, and I love her as an actress. But when there’s somehow an alchemy of a part to an actress at that time, when that all comes together? Magic.”

The performances are magical, but what happened to the Sardinas off stage was anything but: between gigs, they endured poverty, addiction, and some incredibly bad luck.
“They go through so much,” Hudson said. “And if it wasn’t a true story, it would almost be – you wouldn’t believe it, you know?”
The film is at its heart a love story, and you could say the two lead actors have chemistry to burn. Yet, Jackman and Hudson did not know each other well before the project began. “It’s become a bit of a joke,” said Jackman. “Because I remember when we first met, but she has no recollection. That’s the impression I made!”
And now? “Oh, well, very well,” said Hudson. “Except consummating. Beyond that, pretty, pretty much everything!”

Hudson was apprehensive when Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell watched the film: “Everyone loved the movie. My big thing was thinking, I was watching my mom watching it. I was like, ‘God …’ because I’m so, I guess, not the glamorous version of myself – or even honestly my version. You know, I was a bit heavier and didn’t see my skin person for a while, you know. I was like, ‘God, it must be so interesting for my mom to see her middle-aged daughter on the screen.’ She must have been like, ‘Oh my God, she’s middle-aged!'”
Still, it seems middle age has been good to Kate Hudson, even in a year that would put the gray in anyone’s hair. Last January, a wind-driven firestorm incinerated the Pacific Palisades section of Los Angeles, where Hudson has lived for most of her life. Her home is one of the few still standing, but her neighborhood is full of vacant lots where her friends’ houses used to be – and some of the places she treasured the most went up in smoke.
She showed us around what was left of the neighborhood: “Every time I drive by here, taking the kids from, like, baseball or soccer, you know, I drive by and I go, ‘Oh, that’s where mommy had her first kiss.’ And now you’re like … it’s not there. And that’s what I mean by, like, nothing lasts.”

But in the end, home is where you feel loved. For Hudson, it’s still her community in Los Angeles. And for Jackman, it’s his pub in Manhattan: “I come in here, I get a lot of, ‘Ah, Hughie, come over and have a beer, mate.’ I said, ‘Ah, I gotta go.’ ‘Ah, come on mate, don’t be a ****. Let’s go. Let’s have a beer. Buy me a beer. You can afford it!’ A lot of that.”
I asked, “Can you show up someplace and kind of be a regular dude?”
“Oh yeah,” he replied.
“You can show up here and be a regular dude?”
“Yeah, except I just have to be prepared for them to make fun of me!” Jackman said, “which is a sign of affection!”

Jackman was prepping for a little Neil Diamond tribute at Old Mates later that night, and just like in the movie, Jackman and Hudson did what Neil Diamond himself would’ve done: raise the roof.

One final note: Neil Diamond himself is not in the film, but Jackman says he loved it – and gave him the ultimate stamp of approval: “He put his arm around me like that, and I sort of leant, and he just kissed me on the forehead. And he said, ‘You did good, kid!'”

An important Harry Potter actress has left the highly anticipated new HBO series just before the production moves on to season two.
Gracie Cochrane, the young star playing Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny Weasley, in the upcoming first season of the TV adaptation, has abruptly walked away from the high-profile franchise.
Her exit triggers an immediate recasting process for the major role ahead of the second season, which is scheduled to begin filming this autumn following an early renewal by the network.
The shocking departure was confirmed by Cochrane and her family in a statement explaining that she had made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one due to unforeseen circumstances.
The family added that her time in the wizarding world had been truly wonderful and expressed gratitude to casting director Lucy Bevan and the production team.
HBO followed up with its own statement, offering full support for the family’s decision, thanking Cochrane for her work on the first season, and wishing her the best for the future.
This unexpected casting shake-up comes just seven months before the latest television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books officially hits screens on Christmas 2026.
The eight-episode debut season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will introduce a fresh-faced core cast led by 12-year-old Dominic McLaughlin as the titular young wizard, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.
Heavyweight acting talent like John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost are also confirmed to star.
Losing Cochrane at this stage is a significant hurdle for the showrunners, as Ginny Weasley’s character expands drastically in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which will serve as the basis for the next block of episodes.
Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, excitement for the series remains incredibly high, especially after HBO dropped its first teaser trailer on 25 March.
The project has even received the ultimate blessing from original cinema star Daniel Radcliffe, who sent a sweet letter to McLaughlin wishing him well and telling him he hoped he had an even better time on set than he did.
While McLaughlin admitted he went mad with excitement reading the note on a train, the production team must now focus on finding a new actress capable of stepping into Ginny’s shoes before cameras roll again.
Sony has confirmed a price hike for its PlayStation Plus subscription service.
Effective May 20, new subscribers in selected regions will pay higher rates for the one-month and three-month plans.
The charges have increased from $10 to $ 10.90, while the three-month subscription has increased from $25 to $27.99.
The cost increase will mainly impact the Essential subscription package, which is the base subscription package needed to play online multiplayer games on PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Whether the other packages, like the Extra and Premium packages, will see an increase is yet to be seen. Sony has not commented on this development yet.
Current subscribers do not have to pay more unless they upgrade their subscription tier. However, subscribers in Turkey and India will see immediate increases irrespective of their status.
Indeed, the growth comes just six months ahead of the scheduled launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, a game that will certainly bring millions of new gamers to the world of online gaming, all requiring PlayStation Plus subscriptions in order to play GTA Online.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Monday warned that India would become part of history and its geography would be changed if it attempts any future misadventure against Pakistan.
The defence minister made the hard-hitting remarks during Geo News programme “Capital Talk” in the backdrop of the recent provocative statement by Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
Taking exception to the Indian army chief’s recent provocative remarks, the defence czar said that Gen Dwivedi was trying to “regain his lost respect” after the humiliating defeat in the 19-day military conflict, spanning from April 22 to May 10, 2025.
In response to the Indian aggression, Pakistan’s armed forces launched a large-scale retaliatory military action, named “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos”, and targeted several Indian military targets across multiple regions.
Pakistan downed eight Indian fighter jets, including Rafales, and dozens of drones. After at least 87 hours, the war between the two nuclear-armed nations ended on May 10 with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US.
“As a nation, India thinks that its esteem has been damaged,” said Asif.
The minister said that New Delhi is now facing embarrassment on the foreign fronts, adding that Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, which India had considered its “extension,” did not enjoy the same relationship with it as before.
On the other hand, he said that Pakistan achieved “a highly reputable status” in the region, adding that it is difficult for New Delhi to digest it.
When asked about a possible nexus between India and Israel against Pakistan, the minister said that Tel Aviv doesn’t want anyone more powerful in this region other than its partner, India.
He maintained that there could be a resemblance in the objectives of India and Israel.
To another question, the minister said that there is a division between India’s military and civilian leadership.
He was referring to contradictory statements made by the Indian army chief and RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale.
Last week, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, considered the organisation’s second-most senior leader, had said that India should continue diplomatic engagement with Pakistan.
To another query, the minister said that the Indus Waters Treaty had been functioning successfully for the past 66 years, adding that it was one of the oldest agreements and contains a mechanism for resolving disputes.
He also welcomed a new ruling from the Court of Arbitration under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), saying that the verdict was in favour of Pakistan.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in the Hague had upheld its earlier award supporting the continued validity of the IWT, ruling that India could not unilaterally suspend the agreement.
