Lionel Messi scored his 900th career goal on Wednesday to become the second player to reach the mark in elite men’s football after Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 38-year-old Argentine World Cup winner brought up the milestone with a left-footed strike in Inter Miami’s 1-1 draw with Nashville SC in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

The 900th goal came 21 years after Messi scored his first in senior football for Barcelona as a 17-year-old in 2005.

Inter manager Javier Mascherano said Messi’s tally was “insane”.

“I’ve been lucky enough to see most, or many, of the goals he’s scored, much closer than you all, and that’s a privilege,” he added.

“The number we’re talking about is insane, and that’s why Leo is a one of a kind.”

Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, reached the landmark in his 1,142nd appearance for club and country, nearly 100 games fewer than Ronaldo, who took 1,236 games to reach the milestone in September 2024.

Portuguese forward Ronaldo has now reached 965 goals and has targeted the 1,000-mark before he quits the game.

The majority of Messi’s goals came during his spell at Barcelona, where he scored 672 times. He added 32 at Paris St-Germain and 81 for Inter Miami and scored 115 for Argentina, with whom he won the World Cup in 2022.

Messi’s teammates have been able to depend on him at crucial times with 175 of his goals coming in knockout matches, including 35 in finals.

His 129 goals in Europe’s Champions League is second only to Ronaldo’s 140.

Messi’s milestone goal came on a bittersweet night for Miami, who exited the competition on away goals after the first leg of their tie ended 0-0.

  • CDF Asim Munir to attend ceremony as chief guest.
  • Naval and Air chiefs will also attend GHQ event.
  • Event to include wreath laying at martyrs’ monument.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir will address a ceremony marking one year of Marka-e-Haq victory at GHQ, Rawalpindi, tomorrow (Sunday).

The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 8:40am, will feature top military leadership, with Field Marshal Munir participating as chief guest.

Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf will also attend the event, which includes wreath laying at the martyrs’ monument and a tri-services salute.

Marka-e-Haq (battle of truth) refers to the 19-day military conflict with India, spanning from April 22 to May 10, 2025.

On May 6-7 last year, India launched an unprovoked attack on Pakistan, following an attack on tourists in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan, during the 87-hour conflict, downed eight Indian fighter jets, including French-made Rafale, and dozens of drones. The war between the two nuclear-armed nations ended on May 10 with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US.

Earlier this week on Thursday, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that Pakistan was “preparing for the future war,” while asserting that the country had not underestimated New Delhi but “placed them [India] where they are.”

ISPR DG made the remarks while addressing a press conference along with Rear Admiral Shifaat Ali Khan and Air Vice Marshal Tariq Ghazi to mark the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq.

He noted that Pakistan’s military had defeated an enemy “five times larger than itself,” and further described India as a “terrorist state”.

Separately, the Islamabad Traffic Police have issued an advisory ahead of a scheduled event set to be held to mark the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq on May 10, 2026.

According to the advisory posted on X by the Islamabad deputy commissioner, temporary traffic diversions will remain in place across several key routes in the capital city from 6pm to 12 midnight on May 10.

Rory McIlroy slams LIV golfers who don’t want to come back to PGA Tour—but why now?

Rory McIlroy slams LIV golfers who don’t want to come back to PGA Tour—but why now?

Rory McIlroy called out LIV golfers; why would they not want to come back to play on the PGA Tour amid rising doubts over LIV Golf.

Masters champion McIlroy lashed out, saying, “If you don’t want to play here, I think that says something about you.”

Speaking Friday, May 8, at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, McIlroy opened up when asked about his reaction to the LIV controversy.

McIlroy said, “It’s a question if they do want to come back.”

“Obviously we have seen the quotes over the last few days. And, you know, it seems like some of the guys, if… again, it all depends on what happens to LIV.”

“If it is a scenario where they have the option to comeback and play on the traditional tours, I think (PGA Tour CEO) Brian Rolapp has said anything that makes this tour stronger, anything that makes the DP World Tour stronger, I think everyone should be open to that.

“That’s just good business practice.”

McIlroy, 37, also takes a dig at LIV’s future survival under different platforms.

“It’s never been for me and, look, it doesn’t mean that LIV is going to go away.

They’re going to go and try and find alternative investment, whatever that may look like.”

McIlroy added, “But when one of the wealthiest sovereign wealth funds in the world thinks that you’re too expensive for them, that sort of says something.”

Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) confirmed last month that it will stop funding the LIV league at the end of this season.

Timberwolves’ coach Finch blasts Tony Brothers for ‘unprofessional’ conduct

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch calls out at the referee Tony Brothers following his team’s Game 3 defeat to the Spurs.

Finch termed Brother’s conduct on-court as “completely unprofessional.”

Brothers, the veteran NBA referee, and Finch had a heated exchange during timeout.

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Finch, as players and staff separated the two, while Anthony Edwards pulled Finch away

After both clashed, a reporter asked Finch, saying, “I’m not sure I’ve seen players hold a referee back from their head coach before…,” to which Finch responded, “Pretty unprofessional, huh?”.

He then launched a verbal attack on Brothers.

Finch explained he got upset over what he perceived as an intended delay in being granted a timeout.

“I wanted the timeout. I had called it 3 seconds earlier and I wanted the timeout,” Finch said.

“I said ‘I want my 3 seconds back,’… because he clearly heard me. He looked my way, ignored me, went on with the play… almost cost us a turnover.

“So, and then you know, he lost it.”

“Then I went to ask him where the ball was going to be taken in and he screamed at me for that. So, completely unprofessional behavior by him.”

On the other hand, in a postgame interview, Edwards played down the incident after the game, saying it’s all part of “competition at the highest level.”

“We want to win. Finchy wants to win. Tony Brothers is Tony Brothers, we all love him, so it’s all good here,” added Edwards.

Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards posted 32 points, but Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama scored 39 to guide the team to a 115-108 triumph with a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 of the Western conference of the NBA playoffs is set to be played tomorrow, Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Minneapolis.
