Radiation fears rise after cracks found in $2 billion Chernobyl shield

The protective shield built over Reactor 4 in Chernobyl has cracked, sparking fears that the deadly radiation might start leaking.

Following the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986, a $2 billion protective shield, officially known as the New Safe Confinement (NSC) was constructed over the Reactor 4 to contain the radiation.

For context, the World Nuclear Association describes the Chernobyl nuclear disaster as an accident in 1986 that was the result of a flawed reactor design, operated with inadequately trained personnel.

According to the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed that a Russian drone strike, in February, severely damaged the dome, which has already lost its primary safety functions.

A safety assessment conducted earlier this month found that though the dome remains intact and its monitoring systems are working, it has lost its confinement capability.

IAEA director Rafael Mariano Grossi urged the need for a comprehensive restoration process to ensure long-term nuclear safety.

The agency has also suggested upgrades to the shield, equipping it with:

  • Advanced corrosion monitoring
  • A high-tech automatic system to keep the radioactive reactor under control
  • Improved humidity control

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has put the facility under high risk.

Grossi said that the IAEA will do everything in its power to support and restore the nuclear safety and security of the Chernobyl nuclear site.

Additional temporary repairs at the site are scheduled to take place in 2026.

‘Game of Thrones’ star Kit Harington shares secret to his successful marriage

Kit Harington believes the secret to his nearly eight-year marriage with Rose Leslie lies in love, honesty and teamwork.

In a recent interview with Mr. Porter, the 39-year-old actor opened up about how he and Leslie, who share two children, navigate life’s challenges together.

“Rose and I are very caring of each other,” he explained. “We’re very loving, and tactile, and we make sure we tell each other that we love each other.”

Best known for his role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, Harington described his wife as “the most genuine soul”.

He credited her with standing by him through difficult times including his struggles with alcohol.

“I’m very, very lucky. Rose was there through all of the hard stuff, and she’s been through some journeys with me. But it has truly worked out.”

That support was especially evident during his recent role as addict Sir Henry in HBO’s Industry.

Knowing the storyline would be emotionally heavy, Leslie stepped in to balance family life.

While working on a play in Stratford, she told Harington, “OK, you take the kids while you’re filming in Cardiff.”

For the actor, returning home to his children after long filming days became a grounding force.

“Anything dark I’d had to deal with during the day was gone… I’d get home and be a dad.”

Harington has been candid about his past reliance on alcohol and his decision to enter rehab in 2019.

He now says sobriety reshaped his life, allowing him to embrace fatherhood and marriage more fully.

“My life is better like this,” he reflected. “I think it all happened just at the right time. I’d made some choices, and then everything fell into place… I think that my kids met me at the right time.”

For Harington, the real secret to a lasting marriage isn’t avoiding hardship.

It is facing it together with love and resilience.

‘The Odyssey’ director comments on Donald Trump’s controversial movies tarrifs

Christopher Nolan raises concerns amid President Trump’s movies taxes proposal

Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan has shared his opinion about the controversial movies’ tariffs proposal.

Nolan, who is the newly elected president for the Directors Guild of America, commented on the matter while setting out priorities for the company.

US President has proposed 100% tax on films made outside of America.

“I don’t know how a tariff system would work”, said the Oppenheimer director.

While speaking with Variety, the 55-year-old filmmaker opened that there are more serious conversations that require much focus than the movies tariffs.

He said in a statement, “I will say that since President Trump has started bandying these ideas around, there’s a much more serious conversation from the studios about how to improve the situation in the United States – to be perfectly frank about it.”

The Dark Knight filmmaker emphasized on the incentives that will be lost and stressed upon the unemployment that will prevail in the country.

“If you look at the overall spending from the consumer on media, on entertainment, on our work, it’s extremely stable.

“But we’re looking at a 35 percent to 40 percent decline in employment for our members.”

Nolan raised these concerns after the filming of The Odyssey around the Mediterranean.
