Trump-Xi meeting not in jeopardy but could be delayed, says White House

- White House cites ongoing Iran war as top presidential priority.
- Beijing, Washington continue talks ahead of Trump’s visit.
- US, Chinese officials held constructive trade meetings in Paris.
Donald Trump’s proposed meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is not at risk but could be delayed as the US president remains focused on the Iran war, the White House said on Monday.
Trump is due to travel to China from March 31 to April 2 for a highly anticipated meeting between the leaders of the world’s two biggest economies.
“I don’t think the meeting is in jeopardy, but it’s quite possible the meeting could be delayed,” spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program.
Trump told the Financial Times on Sunday he might postpone the meeting if China did not help to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Leavitt said should the trip be delayed, the White House would announce new dates soon.
“The president’s utmost responsibility right now as commander-in-chief is to ensure the continued success of Operation Epic Fury, as he’s doing 24/7 here at the White House and here at home. So we’ll look forward to announcing those dates very soon,” she said.
Meanwhile, Beijing said today it is in talks with Washington over an expected visit by the US president, who has pressured Nato allies including China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway, critical to oil transportation, has been effectively closed by Iran in retaliation over the US and Israeli war against Tehran.
Trade is set to take centre stage in the potential talks between President Xi Jinping and Trump later this month, AFP reported.
Beijing’s foreign ministry said today that Beijing and Washington “are maintaining communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China”.
“Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in China-US relations,” spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference.
Lin did not address Trump’s recent pressure on Nato allies and China.
The “tense situation” in the strait has “disrupted international trade routes for goods and energy”, Lin said when asked about Trump’s comments.
Top US and Chinese economic officials concluded trade talks in Paris over the weekend in a meeting widely seen as laying the groundwork for Trump’s visit.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also attending, according to his office.
Both sides called the meetings “constructive”, with Beijing’s top trade negotiator Li Chenggang saying they were “in-depth” and candid.
Li said both China and the United States agreed stable bilateral economic trade relations were beneficial to both sides and the world, state news agency Xinhua reported.
The two delegations discussed establishing a bilateral working mechanism to promote cooperation in trade and investment, Li added.
The meeting follows a turbulent year in US-China economic ties since Trump returned to the presidency.

US and Israel realize Iran aggression ‘a miscalculation’: Russia’s Lavrov

Russia’s top diplomat says the United States and Israel have come to the realization that their military aggression against Iran was a miscalculation.
Speaking on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the military offensive launched on February 28, stating that Washington had believed it could subdue Tehran swiftly through “unprovoked aggression.”
“I believe these people now understand how mistaken they were, how misguided they were,” Lavrov said.
The Russian foreign minister also expressed Moscow’s readiness to act as a mediator to help resolve the ongoing crisis, should the need arise.
The US and Israel started a fresh round of aerial aggression on Iran on February 28, some eight months after they carried out unprovoked attacks on the country.
The attacks led to the martyrdom of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone barrages targeting both Israeli-occupied territories and US military installations in regional countries.

Leader endorses officials appointed by late Ayatollah Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei has endorsed officials appointed by his late father, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, directing them to remain in their posts.
In an explanatory decree issued on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei said that all officials and managers appointed by the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution must continue serving in their positions in accordance with the directives and instructions previously given to them.
He added that none of those officials will need an official decree to renew their mandates, at least for the time being.
The endorsement comes a week after Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Khamenei as the third Leader of the Islamic Revolution following his father’s assassination in a joint US-Israeli terrorist airstrike targeting his office in Tehran on February 28.
The attack, which also killed several high‑profile military commanders, provoked a massive response from the Iranian armed forces, targeting US military assets in regional countries and locations in the Israeli‑occupied territories.
Ayatollah Khamenei issued his first written message to the Iranian nation last week, saying he would continue his father’s policies of resisting hegemony and imperialism and defending the world’s oppressed.
He also made clear that Iran will persist in fighting the ongoing war of aggression by the United States and Israel until the aggressors are fully punished.
Based on Iran’s Constitution, the Leader directly appoints senior commanders of the main branches of the Iranian military, as well as the heads of the judiciary, the Guardian Council, the Expediency Council, state television, the leaders of Friday prayers in provincial capitals, and several other organizations.

IRGC orders evacuation of US-affiliated industrial facilities in region

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has once again urged workers to evacuate US-affiliated industrial facilities in West Asia ahead of Iran’s retaliatory attacks.
On Monday, the Public Relations Office of IRGC issued a renewed warning to the owners of US-affiliated industries in the region and called for the evacuation of their workers.
“We warn the defeated American regime to evacuate all American industries in the region, and we ask the people living around industries where Americans hold shares to leave these areas so that they aren’t harmed,” the statement said.
“In the coming hours, these industries will be targeted and hit,” it added.
The US and Israel started a fresh round of unlawful military aggression on Iran on February 28, some eight months after they carried out unprovoked attacks on the country.
The recent attacks led to the martyrdom of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei and hundreds of Iranian civilians, including women and children, as well as several senior military commanders.
Iran has carried out extensive retaliatory attacks on US assets in the region and on locations in the Israeli-occupied territories since the first day of the US-Israeli war.
The Islamic Republic has said that it respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors and its reprisal attacks are directed at US assets and bases on their soil.
It has also warned regional countries to not allow their territory to be used for attacks against Iran.
