Elena Rybakina beats No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win Australian Open
Elena Rybakina won the Australian Open title with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday that avenged her loss in the championship decider here in 2023.
Four years ago she won the first set but lost the final in three. This time, after breaking in the first game and taking the first set, she rallied after losing the second set and going down 3-0 in the third. She won five straight games and then closed out with an ace on her first championship point.
It was a second major title for fifth-seeded Rybakina, who won Wimbledon in 2022 and entered that Australian final four years ago as the only major winner in the contest.
While Sabalenka went on to win another three majors, including back-to-back triumphs in Australia and the 2024 and ’25 victories at the U.S. Open, Rybakina’s results dipped and she didn’t reach another major final until this tournament.

A win over Sabalenka at the season-ending WTA Finals last November has changed her career trajectory.
Rybakina went on the attack from the start and her serve was strong, with six aces and – apart from the two breaks at the end of the second set and the start of the third – she fended off six of the breakpoint chances she faced.
While Sabalenka’s grunts and roars intensified and her effusive “let’s go” self-encouragement increased in regularity as the match wore on, Rybakina maintained a quiet, almost serene, composure.
In the end, she let her serve and her returns do the talking.
The pair hugged at the net. Rybakina clapped her left hand on the strings of her racket and held her arm up to the crowd triumphantly.

Zendaya brings back her decade-old Oscars look with new detail
Zendaya is stealing hearts with “something old” as secret wedding rumours with Tom Holland continue to swirl.
Seemingly enjoying the spotlight amid intensifying marriage buzz with her Spider-Man co-star, the Dune actress continued to surprise fans in a bridal-white gown while promoting her upcoming film The Drama, co-starring Robert Pattinson.
On Tuesday, March 17, the Challengers actress revived her 2015 Oscars look with new accessories, notably including her engagement ring and what appeared to be a wedding band in the same finger.
At the Los Angeles premiere of The Drama, the 29-year-old, who got engaged to Holland in 2025, rewore the silky Vivienne Westwood gown she previously donned to the Academy Awards more than a decade ago.
As the Euphoria star went into her own archives for the occasion her go-to stylist and close friend Law Roach also confirmed fans’ curiosity about the dress.
“Something old,” the stylist wrote over a throwback image of Zendaya smiling as she posed in the dress at the 2015 awards ceremony, affirmin the look was from a past appearance.
It is pertinent to note that Roach, 47, was also the same person who tipped the world off to the alleged nuptials.
Since then, fans have been closely watching the couple’s every move, as an official announcement from Zendaya and Holland is still awaited.

Top MQM-P leader demands PM reinstate Kamran Tessori as Sindh governor
- Farooq Sattar urges PM to review his decision.
- Tessori was replaced by government last week.
- Tessori became governor in October 2022.
KARACHI: A top Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader has sought the restoration of Karam Tessori as the Sindh governor.
In a statement, MQM-P Senior Deputy Convener Farooq Sattar said: “Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should review his decision to remove Kamran Tessori and reinstate him [as the Sindh governor]”.
Tessori, a MQM-P leader, was removed from the post last week with the government appointing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Nehal Hashmi in his place.
Following the PM’s decision to recommend Hashmi for the post, the MQM-P stated that the party was not taken into confidence by the federal government regarding the decision.
Tessori became governor in October 2022 following Imran Ismail’s departure.
Hashmi, meanwhile, after taking oath as the governor last week, said that the MQM-P remains an ally of the PML-N despite the change — the parties are coalition partners in the Centre.
Who is the new governor?
Born in Karachi on January 28, 1960, Hashmi is a prominent lawyer and a seasoned politician. He began practising law in the late 1980s and earlier founded a political organisation called the All Pakistan Youth League during his student years, according to The News.
He formally joined the PML-N in 1992 and served as adviser on law, justice and human rights to then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999. Hashmi also played an important legal role in several high-profile cases, including those related to Nawaz and the tribunal concerning Murtaza Bhutto.
He later served as president of the PML-N Karachi in 2012 and was appointed general secretary of the party in Sindh in August 2014. Hashmi became a member of the Senate of Pakistan in March 2015 and served until February 2018.
In 2017, he was expelled from the party over a controversial statement linked to the Panama Papers case in Pakistan, but his party membership was restored in 2021.
In February 2018, he was sentenced to one month in prison and fined Rs50,000 in a contempt of court case, resulting in the termination of his Senate membership and a five-year disqualification. He was released after completing his sentence.

Jacob Elordi kept years long promise to mom at Oscars 2026
Jacob Elordi made good on a promise he made as a teenager on Sunday night, bringing his mum Melissa as his date to the 2026 Academy Awards, just as he told her he would when he was 15 years old.
The Euphoria star, 28, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as The Creature in Frankenstein, stepped onto the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in a classic Bottega Veneta suit, with Melissa arriving alongside him in a striking black gown adorned with red and blue sequined flowers.
Elordi had spoken about the promise on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in January, explaining the story behind it.
“I’m going to take mom,” he said.
“I promised her when I was 15 that I would take her. So, I have to honour that.”
He also recalled how his dad had been rather more cautious about whether the plan would ever actually happen.
“My mom, she fully believed in me the whole time. I remember dad did the dad thing at one point where he was like, ‘You’ve got to have a plan B because this isn’t necessarily feasible.’ And I think I said something like, ‘My plan B is the Oscars.'”
As it turned out, no plan B was required.
Although Sean Penn took home the Best Supporting Actor award on the night, Frankenstein was far from empty-handed, picking up wins for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Production Design.
For Elordi, though, the night may well be remembered less for what happened on stage and more for the moment he walked the red carpet with the woman who believed in him all along.
